Book excerpt: Despite his significance, little scholarly attention has been paid to Adams's contributions as an artist or his place in photographic history. This handsome book addresses this gap by looking beyond his reputation as a Sierra Club environmentalist and examining in depth his life as an artist, and the complexities of his creative vision. 80 illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Weston (1886–1958) was one of the most celebrated photographers of the twentieth century. Jean Charlot (1898–1979), a classically trained French artist best known for his murals, woodcuts, and paintings celebrating Mexican culture, played a key role as a participant and chronicler of the Mexican Renaissance. This book, based on letters that Weston and Charlot exchanged from the early 1920s until Weston’s death in 1958, documents a friendship that says as much about art—about photography and fresco, practice, criticism, and history—as it does about the intersection of a number of fascinating characters, the ups and downs of the correspondents’ daily lives, the pursuit of their dreams and aspirations, and the support and encouragement they gave each other. Lew Andrews crafts a multivalent narrative that reconfigures our understanding of Weston, Charlot, and their era, shedding new light on specific events and artwork. While giving us rare insight into the everyday life of these artists, this work also supplies an important chapter in the history of twentieth-century art and photography, seen close up and from the inside.

Book excerpt: This new book surveys Edward Weston's work more comprehensively and exhaustively than any previous work. A combination of biography and critical analysis, it offers more than 320 meticulously reproduced duotone images, nearly a quarter of which have never been reproduced in books before. The selected photographs trace Weston's career from his early days, through formative years in Mexico, and on through the balance of his career, which ended because of the onset of Parkinson's disease ten years prior to his death in 1958. Treated chronologically and emphasizing Weston's creative preoccupations in each period, the book includes work that he created in 1938 and 1939 with funds from the first two Guggenheim Foundation grants ever awarded to a photographer. To illustrate the book vintage prints have been selected from the copious Weston Archives at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, and the highly important Lane Collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Nearly 10,000 photographs have been examined in order to select those reproduced in the book.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clement Greenberg (1909–1994), champion of abstract expressionism and modernism—of Pollock, Miró, and Matisse—has been esteemed by many as the greatest art critic of the second half of the twentieth century, and possibly the greatest art critic of all time. On radio and in print, Greenberg was the voice of "the new American painting," and a central figure in the postwar cultural history of the United States. Greenberg first established his reputation writing for the Partisan Review, which he joined as an editor in 1940. He became art critic for the Nation in 1942, and was associate editor of Commentary from 1945 until 1957. His seminal essay, "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" set the terms for the ongoing debate about the relationship of modern high art to popular culture. Though many of his ideas have been challenged, Greenberg has influenced generations of critics, historians, and artists, and he remains influential to this day.

Book excerpt: This captivating biography reveals the previously untold love story of Edward Weston and Margrethe Mather. Both were photographic artists at the center of the bohemian cultural scene in Los Angeles during the 1910s and 1920s, yet Weston would become a major Modernist photographer while Mather, who Weston ultimately expunged from his journals, would fall into obscurity. The book reveals how they and their entourage sought out the limelight as the Hollywood film industry came of age. Based on ten years of research and illustrated with extraordinary images, some never published, this history has a captivating range of characters, including Charlie Chaplin, Imogen Cunningham, Max Eastman, Emma Goldman, Tina Modotti, Vaslav Nijinsky, and Carl Sandburg. The lively text brings to life the ambiance of this exciting time in Los Angeles history as well as its darker side. Artful Lives exceeds any previously published account of this key period in Weston's development and reveals Mather's important contribution to it, making it an essential reference in Weston studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, Stridentism (estridentismo) burst on the scene in the 1920s as an avant-garde challenge to political and intellectual complacency. Led by poets Manuel Maples Arce, Germán List Arzubide, and Salvador Gallardo; prose writer Arqueles Vela; painters Fermín Revucltas, Ramón Alva de la Canal, Leopoldo Mendez, and Jean Charlot; and sculptor Germán Cueto, the Stridentists rejected academic conservatism, celebrated modernity and technological novelties such as the radio, cinema, and the airplane, and sought to transform not only written and visual language but also everyday life through the creation of new aesthetic spaces and new approaches to the urban environment. By 1928 the movement had dispersed, but its iconoclastic spirit lived on in other forms, mergingin into and influencing other movements of the 1930s and beyond. This history of Stridentism as a multifacted cultural phenomenon joyfully recreates the spirit of 1920s Mexico. Bringing together original research and critical analysis, it explores the ways in which the Stridentists pushed the limits of the collective imatgination in an era of conflict and change.
