Was long, and crowded with events: little more than a sketch of it in its inner and outer aspects is to be looked for in a book like this, which, moreover, professes only to repro duce and epitomize what has been already brought to light by the original research Of others. It may be well, therefore, to mention the names of a few out Of many writers whose works should be studied by any who wish to fill up these outlines with more thorough and detailed information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Books of the Reign of King Edward the Third: Years XVII. And XVIII In one instance the transposition may, at first sight, appear to have been somewhat arbitrarily made. A passage standing in the old editions as the conclusion of No. 112 of Michaelmas Term 17 Edward III. (which is in fact a second report of No. 25) has now been transferred to the end of the second report of No. 21, which appears in the old editions as No. 108 (bis). It relates to the interval allowed for an adjourn ment, in cases of Quare impedit, by the Statute of Marlborough, c. 12. As No. 25 is a case of Quare impedit, and No. 21 is a Quare incumbmrit, it may, perhaps, be asked why the passage should not be re garded as belonging really to No. 25 rather than to No. 21. The answer is that it is absolutely incon sistent with the pleadings in No. 25. In that case there was no pleading to issue on the facts, and no jury called, or to be called. In No. 21, however, there was an issue, and the county from which the jurors had to be summoned was Cornwall, as the church of Kilk hampton, to which the Quare incumbravit has reference, is in that county. Counsel is represented as com plaining that the day which had been given, according to the entry of the clerk upon the roll, was at a shorter interval than was allowed by the Act; and to enforce his argument he said the place from which the jury will come to try that issue. Is in the most foreign county in England. By the expression most foreign he, no doubt, meant the county which is the most remote from Westminster, and from his point of View it was not an unapt description of the county which includes the Land's End. Luckily for him, and for us, he had the run of the library there, which was better furnished than might have been expected. He found such good and suggestive material therein that he undertook to compile a history of Britain, an enterprise which very few knights in that illiterate age were competent to attempt. He offered in his prologue the usual apology of an inexperienced writer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rolls of Arms of the Reigns of Henry III and Edward III It is a remarkable circumstance, that although volume after volume has been printed on Heraldry, few attempts should have been made to publish the contemporary manuscripts on the subject which are extant; for they not only afford the most authentic notices of the Arms of persons who lived in former ages, but abound in valuable illustrations of the science, and present notices of our ancient families, of much interest to them. As has been pointed out in the Preface to the "Roll of Arms of the reign of Edward the Second," these Rolls are also of great utility for historical, biographical, and genealogical purposes. Is practically that of England for half a century, and embraces that of Scotland France, the Low Countries, and Spain in a more limited degree. The work is, therefore, more than a biography; it is a history of an important and dramatic epoch, as influenced and overshadowed by the extraordinary man who was the motive power of the activity of his age. It is in this spirit that the book was conceived and executed, and while shunning no labour to obtain original informa tion, I have striven to reproduce it in a style in keeping with the dramatic character of the subject. D. 1309-1310 The time has come when something ought to be said of the manu scripts that we have been using for the compilation Of this volume and its two predecessors. The tale that has to be told cannot be very brief, and we must add that it cannot be satisfactory. Still in the course of it we may be able to disclose a state of affairs which will not be wholly devoid of interest in the eyes Of students of English history. The chief cause of it has been the vain hope of discovering some new fact concerning the dark period in the history Of Pembroke's company of actors. The edi tion as now issued endeavours to conform to the plan of the series, and the editors accept joint responsibility for the whole of it. They have profited greatly from the edition published by the American scholar, W. D. Briggs, in 1914. They are, too, very greatly indebted to the general editor, Mr. R. H. Case, and most of all for his patience in circum stances which must have tried him most sorely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
