Book excerpt: In the continuation of psychological research for the United States Military Academy, initiated during WW II, effort has been largely concerned with improving selection procedures and with evaluating achievement in various aspects of the primary officer training programs. The present report deals with research undertaken in a series of projects covering the period 1 January 1957 through 31 December 1962. The two major problems with which the current research has been concerned are prediction of success of WP graduates in officer assignments of various types and at various levels, and identification of those applicants who show leadership potential and who also are motivated to complete USMA training and subsequent Regular Army officer careers. A number of instruments were developed and administered with the objective of supplementing current selection measures to provide more adequate assessment of motivation and leadership potential. Earlier findings were reinforced in that the Aptitude for the Service Rating (ASR) continues to maintain its predictive superiority over other WP measures with reference to later performance on both field grade and company grade officers. Continuing validity studies and extended follow-up research hold promise for provision of guidance to the USMA in evaluating training given to cadets.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Character and Leadership Development in Military Schools by : Ryan, Mark Patrick
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Character and Leadership Development in Military Schools written by Ryan, Mark Patrick and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military academies have served youth for more than a century with proud traditions of producing graduates who are scholars, leaders, and athletes who adhere to a code of honor and ethical principles as they take the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained at those academies into higher education, the business world, military service, civic endeavors, and the broader workforce. There is a current gap and need for research that explores the various components of a K-20 military school/college education and how those components successfully produce leaders of character for our military, civic, academic, and business worlds both in the United States and abroad. The Handbook of Research on Character and Leadership Development in Military Schools synthesizes research on the impact of military academies by providing a singular compendium of current academic studies on the graduates of military academies and the communities of which they enter after graduation. The chapters will explore the academics, leadership, character development, citizenship, athletics, and other dimensions of both global and national, and both private and public, military academies. This book is ideal for current leaders, staffs, governing board members, and alumni of military academies both in the United States and internationally along with policymakers, government officials, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the implications of character and leadership development on individuals enrolled in or graduated from military schools.

Book Synopsis Teaching and Learning the West Point Way by : Morten G. Ender
Download or read book Teaching and Learning the West Point Way written by Morten G. Ender and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and Learning the West Point Way is a unique compendium of the best teaching and learning practices from one of the most celebrated and storied undergraduate teaching and learning environments and institutions in America – the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, USA. Drawing on the broad academic curriculum that the students follow at West Point – in addition to military leadership, character development, and competitive athletics – this book describes proven and effective undergraduate pedagogy across a number of academic disciplines. Case studies, strategies and techniques, empirical teaching and learning research results, syllabi, and assignments developed and deployed by West Point faculty are included, which faculty in other higher education institutions can adapt and apply to their own programs and courses. An accompanying companion website provides additional syllabi, course guides, lesson plans, PowerPoint activities, and lecture slides, as well as videos of the editors and authors discussing how key concepts in their chapters might be applied in different teaching and learning contexts. This is an opportunity to gain an in-depth insight into the programs and practices inside one of the world’s premier leadership development and educational institutions. It should appeal to new and experienced faculty and administrators interested in course creation and syllabus design across a wide range of disciplines in educational institutions and military academies across the globe.
Book Synopsis Educational Objectives by : Matthew R. Seay
Download or read book Educational Objectives written by Matthew R. Seay and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined pressures resulting from fiscal austerity and evidence of a lack of intellectual depth among U.S. military strategic art practitioners provides an impetus to examine the senior level colleges' role in educating the nation's military leaders. This paper argues for changes to the Officer Professional Military Education Policy (OPMEP) that will effectively guide the services and the senior level colleges to tailor their professional military education systems to better meet the Department of Defense's human capital requirements. Of these changes, the most significant is to explicitly scope the Joint Learning Objectives and subordinate Learning Objectives thereby linking the educational experience to the force's requirements. A second recommendation is for the OPMEP to mandate each service implement a periodic roles based requirement analysis to support development of scoped educational objectives.
