Book excerpt: Disaster Management is an intended textbook for students pursuing a first and intermediate course on the subject in any undergraduate programme, especially engineering courses like civil, structural, geotechnical engineering and other specialized courses on the subject. The latest AICTE and the earlier UGC model curriculums have been extensively consulted to design the contents of the book. Knowledge of research methodology is essential for all who either play an active role in conducting research or desire to keep themselves updated in the field of knowledge. Keeping this in mind, this edition has been thoroughly revised. The book contains an up-to-date account of the methods and techniques suited to the field of education and other allied disciplines and thus provides an understanding of significant research problems that need to be tackled. The book elaborates the quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques; use of descriptive and inferential statistics; reporting of the results of research along with the characteristics and uses of historical, descriptive, ethnographic and experimental methods. Case studies form an important part of the text. It also provides priority areas of educational research in India in the context of National Education Policy (1986) and its Programme of Action (1992), UGC, DEC-IGNOU (2006), NCERT (2005), and UNESCO initiatives and policies as well as the Surveys of Research in Education (1997 and 2006).Designed and written mainly for the students of M.A. (Education, Psychology and Sociology), M.Ed. and M.Phil. (Education, Psychology and Sociology), the book will be of immense value to the Ph.D. students and other researchers of Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Management, Legal Studies, Humanities and Languages.

Book excerpt: The Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) in the U.S. Department of Education has a mandate for expanding knowledge of teaching and learning and for improving education in this country. This book focuses on how OERI can better fulfill that mission in light of what is known about why prior education reforms have often failed, what is needed to enhance the effectiveness of such efforts, and what education research and development can contribute to better schools. The history, mission, governance, organization, functions, operations, and budgets of OERI are analyzed. Recommendations are made for restructuring OERI, expanding funding, involving scholars from many fields, and engaging teachers and school principals in improvement efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents the latest thinking and current examples of design research in education. Design-based research involves introducing innovations into real-world practices (as opposed to constrained laboratory contexts) and examining the impact of those designs on the learning process. Designed prototype applications (e.g., instructional methods, software or materials) and the research findings are then cycled back into the next iteration of the design innovation in order to build evidence of the particular theories being researched, and to positively impact practice and the diffusion of the innovation. The Handbook of Design Research Methods in Education-- the defining book for the field -- fills a need in how to conduct design research by those doing so right now. The chapters represent a broad array of interpretations and examples of how today’s design researchers conceptualize this emergent methodology across areas as diverse as educational leadership, diffusion of innovations, complexity theory, and curriculum research. This volume is designed as a guide for doctoral students, early career researchers and cross-over researchers from fields outside of education interested in supporting innovation in educational settings through conducting design research.

But the task of providing adequate educational facilities for its vast population proves to be too heavy a burden for the government. Private schools, therefore, have made a niche in the country. This book makes a comparative study of government and private high schools in Mizoram regarding different aspects—infrastructural facilities, teachers, qualifications, training, workload, salary and other benefits, scholastic as well as co-curricular activities, academic achievements, and parents' expenditure on their children's education. The study of socio-economic status of parents and their preferences for schools also make part of the book.

Book excerpt: An annual prize is awarded for the best paper appearing in Accounting Education: an international journal, and this book contains the prize-winning papers for every year from 1992 to 2012. The journal’s primary mission since the first issue was published in March 1992 has been to enhance the educational base of accounting practice, and all the papers in this book relate to that mission. These papers, reporting on research studies undertaken by accounting education scholars from around the world, build on research findings from the broader domain of education scholarship and embrace a wide array of topics – including: curriculum development, pedagogic innovation, improving the quality of learning, and assessing learning outcomes. Of particular interest are three themes, each of which runs through several of the papers: students’ approaches to learning and learning style preferences; ethics and moral intensity; and innovation within the accounting curriculum. Accounting educators will find many ideas in the book to help them in enriching their work, and accounting education researchers will be able to identify many points of departure for extending the studies on which the papers report – whether comparatively or longitudinally. This book is a compilation of papers originally published in Accounting Education: an international journal.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) is the third in a series of longitudinal studies sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics. This report profiles the mathematics and science instruction received by eighth graders (11,414 surveyed in mathematics and 10,686 in science) in public and private schools in 1988 and proposes to trace the participants into the 10th and 12th grades. A preface lists highlighted findings, tables, and figures included in the document. The body of the report consists of five chapters. Chapter I discusses the purpose and format of the report and limitations of the study. Chapters II and III examine the relationship of various aspects of mathematics and science instruction to students' socioeconomic status and race-ethnicity and type of school attended. Among the aspects examined were the major topics taught, average class size, hours per week attended, allocation of class time, assigned homework, availability of instructional materials, student attitudes toward mathematics and science, and teacher characteristics and qualifications. Chapter IV examines mathematics and science achievement test scores in relation to the various components of instruction measured in the study. Chapter V provides a descriptive profile of the mathematics curriculum, the science curriculum, teacher characteristics and qualifications, classroom characteristics, school type differences, and students' opportunity to learn based on the findings. Appendices that describe the methodology employed and standard errors of estimates reported in tables and figures in the text are provided. (MDH)
