Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Guidance in High Schools On the other hand, there are many bright pupils who are failing to find in the work of the school a challenge which is worthy of their abilities. A few become bored because they find the assignments too easy. Many of them are not working up to their capacity. Altho the percent of such students who leave school is much less than the percent on the lower levels of intelligence who drop out, we have here a distinct educational waste. The percent of failures an index of the need for educational guidance. One index of the need for educational guidance is found in the high percent of failures in many high schools. As indicated above, the majority of these failures is found among students on the lower levels of intelligence. Under present conditions they have only a small chance of success. There is a lack of adjustment of the school to the pupils. Advice should be given with reference to the subjects to be elected, and other provisions should be made which will give children on all levels of intelligence a reasonable chance for doing successfully the work which they undertake. It is only when such provisions have been made that we can claim equal educational opportunities for all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training in the Technique of Study Educational guidance as a means of securing adjustment to the individual differences of students. Recent scientific investigations have gone far in revealing the nature and the extent to which in dividual differences exist among the boys and girls enrolled in our high schools. Instead Of having to deal with a school population which is characterized by homogeneity of interests and purposes, we now realize that our students differ widely in these respects. Educational guidance represents our efforts to direct students in their educational career so that their choice of subjects will be more nearly compat ible with their individual interests and capacities. Adjustment through appropriate training in study procedures. Although significant increases in the efficiency Of our high schools will result undoubtedly from the reconstruction of the curriculum and from educational guidance, there is evidence to indicate that many students are materially handicapped in their efforts to learn because they have not been given appropriate training in the tech nique Of study. Instruction in the procedure of doing the tasks set by the school will doubtless result in an improvement in the achieve ments of these students and in a consequent decrease in the number of those who fail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Guidance: An Experimental Study in the Analysis and Prediction of Ability of High School Pupils The task of giving tests, establishing averages, and calculating relations, which shall serve as a basis for prognosis of mental ability, is, in every sense, a social undertaking, and it is only because of the kindly cooperation of the principals, teachers, and pupils of the two schools studied that it has been possible to secure the data that supply the material for this investigation. The evaluation of the data has equally been a social task and I am particularly indebted to Professors E. L. Thorndike, S. S. Colvin, and H. A. Rigger for assistance in grading the preferences of pupils in the interest test as to vocations, sports, and enter tainments, and to Mrs. Grace Osgood and Miss grace__kelley for the unique assistance which, as librarians, they were able to render in grading magazines and books. In it with one's mind upon both theory and practice it is possible to carve out and set forth guidance of the most valuable and significant character. All true method is concreted law. Method puts the abstraction of the philosophic mind into workable form for the teacher in the school. These workable forms ma be further reduced to a specific field of knowledge and t c then become special methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational and Moral Guidance This manual of vocational and moral guidance is prepared in response to a demand for more detailed information regarding the work that was originated by the writer in the Central High School of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The bibliography appended has been compiled with the assistance of the Grand Rapids Public Library. Mr. Samuel H. Ranck, librarian, has placed every privilege at the disposal of the writer and has cooperated in the preparation of the lists. This bibliography is not exhaustive. The lists that have appeared in earlier bulletins have been thoroughly tried out. Books that did not prove valuable in the hands of the pupils or the teachers have been discarded. The attempt has been made to select a few books that were adapted to the pupils of the several grades, and that were most suited to the purpose of the work in hand. As new books are constantly appearing along the lines studied, teachers and counselors should be on the lookout for up-to-date material in this rather new field. Practically no references have been made to periodical literature, for it seemed impracticable to attempt a bibliography of this type. It should be noted, however, that vocational and moral topics are receiving more and more attention in the current magazines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Psychological Tests in the Educational and Vocational Guidance of High School Pupils When Professor Terman's book on The Intelligence of School Children appeared, it became evident that Leland Stanford Junior University was the center of a surprisingly extensive investigation of human mentality. It was clear that records were being made, not once, but repeatedly, with reference to the same children and that many of these children were being kept under observation throughout their school careers and even beyond. In other words, the common curse of our educational inquiries, in virtue of which nothing is studied hard enough and long enough to reach fundamental results, seemed to have been lifted from the efforts of the Stanford group of men and women. One of the members of the Stanford group is Dr. William M. Proctor, the author of this book. He has given particular attention to high-school pupils and to underclassmen in college and it is to these groups that he has applied his tests. These tests are for the most part such as may be given to large numbers of persons simultaneously. Instruments of this kind have been appropriately called group tests, in contradistinction to the individual or interview tests in the use of which one examiner handles only one person at a time. The history of the development of these group tests to their present status has been sketched in a number of places. It is generally and correctly understood that the prototype of all the present group intelligence tests is the collection of examinations loosely termed the Army Tests. From the Army Tests, either in direct descent or by collateral branches, has sprung a large progeny in the form of group intelligence scales or tests. The use of these tests has already become enormous. To a certain extent the persons who have devised them have become victims of this popularity. When the school people will buy and use these tests by the millions, there is a temptation for authors to rush them into print without sufficient preliminary analysis and without extensive trial in practical situations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance: The Teacher as a Counselor This book, like The Boy and His Gang, springs directly from personal experiences in the Lyman School for Boys, the Industrial School of Massachusetts for delinquent boys. Under the efficient leadership of Superintendent T. F. Chapin, this school has been made over from one of the old military type to a free school where boys, through learning to do by doing, are given a chance to obtain a practical common-sense education. The school is an industrial school in fact as well as in name. It could justly be called a vocational school, for many of the boys obtain here the guidance and training for their life work. The great majority of the four hundred boys are from twelve to sixteen years of age, the right age for guidance. One half of their day is spent in the schoolroom and one half in manual training in the shops or in outdoor work. A short daily period and Saturday afternoon are given to play. In the free life of the school the new boys soon learn by conversation with their older and more experienced cottage mates, or with their masters or teachers, and by personal observation in the various shops, the kind of work which they would like to do. Instruction in agriculture was given once a week in all the schoolrooms. A school garden plot was planted and cared for by each boy in school hours. Two cottages also had garden plots for the boys. Instruction in dairying was given to about twenty-five boys in connection with the practical work of caring for the herd of sixty milch cows. Opportunities for driving the school teams were open to four or five boys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
