Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education of the Negro The eye over it and the motto allude to the many signal interpositions of Providence in favor of the American cause. The date underneath, 1776, is that of the declaration Of independence, and the words under it signify the beginning Of a new American era which commences from that date. It is impossible to trace our history since, without feeling that the Providence which was with us in the beginning, has continued to the nation His gracious interposition. When, unhappily, we have been engaged in war He has given us the victory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most influential work by “the father of Black history”, reflecting the long-standing tradition of antiracist teaching pioneered by Black educators A Penguin Classic The Mis-education of the Negro (1933) is Woodson’s most popular classic work of Black social criticism, drawing on history, theory, and memoir. As both student and teacher, Woodson witnessed distortions of Black life in the history and literature taught in schools and universities. He identified a relationship between these distortions in curriculum and the violence circumscribing Black life in the material world, declaring, “There would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom.” Woodson’s primary focus was the impact dominant modes of schooling had on Black youth. This systematic process of mis-education undermined Black people’s struggles for freedom and justice, and it was an experience that scholars before and after Woodson recognized and worked to challenge. Woodson argued that students, teachers, and leaders needed to be educated in a manner that was accountable to Black experiences and lived realities, both past and present. This edition includes an appendix of selected letters and articles by Woodson, and Suggestions for Further Reading.

Book excerpt: "The Mis-Education of the Negro" originally published in 1933 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, is arguably his greatest book. The thesis of Dr. Woodson's book is that African Americans of his time were being culturally indoctrinated, rather than taught, in American schools. This conditioning, he claims, causes African-Americans to become dependent and to seek out inferior places in the greater society of which they are a part. He challenges his readers to become autodidacts and to "do for themselves," regardless of what they were taught. "The Mis-Education of the Negro" by Carter G. Woodson is a classic book and should be a part of everyone's personal library. "The Education of the Negro," also by Carter Godwin Woodson, is an essential preface to "The Mis-Education of the Negro." Though often confused, these are two separate books. "The Education of the Negro" is Woodson's addresses the education of African Americans prior to the Civil War-a period of time that is not usually addressed or taught. "The Mis-Education of the Negro" addresses African American education from the Civil War period on. "The Education of the Negro" is a must read for anyone interested in African American history, as well as anyone planning to read Woodson's classic sequel, "The Mis-Education of the Negro."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Southern Negro Inspired by the efforts of the Emancipation League of Boston and by other freedman's aid associations, Congress, on March 3, 1865, passed the bill which established the Freedman 's Bureau. Gen. Oliver 0. Howard, the commander of the Army of Ten hessee, was appointed Commissioner, and, in compliance with the statute, he appointed ten assistant commissioners, who severally had charge of the ten districts into which the South was divided. Among these assistant commissioners was Col. John Eaton Jr. (afterwards United States Commissioner of Education), who had charge of the District of Columbia, including Maryland and three counties in Virginia. At first Arkansas and Texas consti tuted one district; but somewhat later Texas became a separate district, and Gen, E. M. Gregory was appointed Assistant Com missioner therefor. In his honor a school for negro pupils was founded in Houston, Texas, and was named The Gregory Institute. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2015 Reprint of 1933 Edition. Full Facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The most imperative and crucial element in Woodson's concept of "Mis-Education" hinged on the education system's failure to present authentic Negro History in schools and the bitter knowledge that there was a scarcity of literature available for such a purpose, because most history books gave little or no space to the black man's presence in America. Some of them contained casual references to Negroes but these generally depicted them in menial, subordinate roles, more or less sub-human. Such books stressed their good fortune at having been exposed, through slavery, to the higher (white man's) civilization. There were included derogatory statements relating to the primitive, heathenish quality of the African background, but nothing denoting skills, abilities, contributions or potential in the image of the Blacks, in Africa or America. Woodson considered this state of affairs deplorable, an American tragedy, dooming the Negro to a brain-washed acceptance of the inferior role assigned to him by the dominant race, and absorbed by him through his schooling.
