Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There remains a significant achievement gap for students of color across the K-12 spectrum. One area that needs increased and immediate attention is how we recruit, prepare, and retain teachers of color. This book asks: Why do teachers of color choose teaching? What are their expectations for the students they will teach? How do their past experiences shape their vision of teachers as role models, mentors, and advocates for children of all races and cultures? The authors detail how Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs)--nearly 800 colleges and universities across the nation that educate nearly 45% of all students of color--are preparing culturally proficient teachers using new methods centered on integrating culturally relevant pedagogy, creating a culture of belonging through faculty engagement and cohort models, enriching student teaching and clinical practice through residencies and school-university partnerships, and working closely with families and communities. Addressing timely and critical issues of educational equity, For the Love of Teaching is a call to action for all colleges and university to improve their teacher education programs. Book Features: Provides case studies of MSIs that are intentionally preparing culturally proficient teachers who are skilled and experienced with diverse groups of students. Offers lessons and approaches from four minority-serving colleges with programs that attract and serve non-White teacher candidates. Includes a broad overview of innovative practices in all aspects of learning to teach, making it relevant to almost any teacher education course. Focuses on serving the needs and maintaining the commitment of candidates of color, while also developing their academic skills and subject-specific content knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on papers presented on ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands, which were presented and discussed in three conferences and a series of meetings from 1997-1999. This work builds on comparative studies of the rise of a radical right and the mobilization of anti-immigrant feelings. It presents cross-national comparative research, due to the creedence that shifting national angles is a powerful strategic tool with which to correct national bias and to uncover submerged or overlooked aspects of specific national cases. The book brings together contributions from Hungarian and Dutch scholars in the field of ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations. The two countries are used as exemplary cases of distinct ethno-political patterns in Central and Western Europe. Combining complementary configurational and dimensional approaches to cross-national comparison, the diverse forms of ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands are analyzed, and competing explanations of ethno-political conflict (or co-ordination) are tested in both national contexts.

Book excerpt: The "European Yearbook of Minority Issues" provides a critical and timely review of contemporary developments in minority-majority relations in Europe. It combines analysis, commentary and documentation in relation to conflict management, international legal developments and domestic legislation affecting minorities in Europe. "Part I" contains scholarly articles and, in 2003/4, features two special focus sections on The Impact of Islam in Europe and Economic Participation of Minorities. "Part II" reviews the implementation of minority legislation and international standards at the universal and regional levels as well as new developments in relation to them and contains a list of international norms. Apart from providing a unique annual overview of minority issues for both scholars and practitioners in this field, the Yearbook is an indispensable reference tool for libraries, research institutes as well as governments and international organisations.

Around the world, political, economic, educational, military, religious, and social relations of every variety have a racial or ethnic component. One cannot begin to understand the history or contemporary situation of the United States, the Soviet Union, China, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Great Britain, Lebanon, Mexico, Canada-indeed, almost any land-without careful attention to the influence of cultural and racial divisions. Preparation of this new edition has brought a strong sense of deja vu, with regard both to the persistence of old patterns of discrimination, even if in new guises, and also to the persistence of limited and constraining explanations. We have also found, however, rich new empirical studies, new theoretical perspectives, and greatly expanded activity and analyses from members of minority groups. Although this edition is an extensive revision, with reference both to the data used and the theoretical approaches examined, we have not shifted from our basically analytical perspective. We strongly support efforts to reduce discrimination and prejudice; but these can be successful only if we try to understand where we are and what forces are creating the existing situation. We hope to reduce the tendency to use declarations and condem nations of other persons' actions as substitutes for an investigation of their causes and consequences.
