Ever since the Oracle uttered the admonition "Know thyself," civilized man has been slowly turning his attention to the importance of studying the deeds and institutions of his race. He finds in them a revelation of human nature altogether above and apart from the self-knowledge that comes to each individual through his own consciousness. For in the history of deeds and institutions there stands out prominently the effigy of human nature in its essential outlines. In contrast to this the individual consciousness offers a picture in which the essential is obscured or obliterated by the complications of the passing moment, which assume undue importance. Modern science has caught most fully the meaning of the Oracle It has become fully aware of the importance of knowing every object in the light of its history. How it began and how it developed must lead to a knowledge of what it is. The knowledge of a thing only as a dead result is very superficial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of Pennsylvania From the Earliest Settlements to the Present Time: Designed for Common Schools, Academies, Colleges, Families, and Libraries The questions at the foot of the pages are not de signed to aid the pupil in guessing at answers, but to guide the teacher, who will readily multiply them to meet the wants of his class and to give local interest to the subject treated in each chapter. Frequent reference to a map of the State, and the explanation of national epochs and general movements, will contrib ute much valuable information and give additional in terest to the study of these chapters; for the author, presupposing a knowledge of geography in his read ers, has given no space to descriptions which properly belong to other works. The tables in the Appendix are for general refer ence. They epitomize the history Of the State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The History of Education in Delaware (Classic Reprint) written by Lyman P. Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Education in Delaware The genesis of education in Delaware must be sought amidst the struggles of the Swedes, the Dutch, and the English for the banks of the Delaware. To separate the earliest educational history of the colo nies which emerged from this conflict is almost a hopeless task, for they were at first much alike in customs and in government. Colonists devoted to the reclamation of the forest primeval and to the mainte nance of the struggle for existence seldom give thought to schools. But the early settlers of Delaware, from the first, made praiseworthy attempts to instruct their children in the rudiments of common learn ing and Christian theology. This they did because they came from Sweden and Holland, at that time the farthest advanced in general education of all the countries of Europe.
