Book Synopsis Buddhism, Education and Politics in Burma and Thailand by : Khammai Dhammasami
Download or read book Buddhism, Education and Politics in Burma and Thailand written by Khammai Dhammasami and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on primary sources in Pali, Burmese and Thai, practising monk Venerable Khammai Dhammasami guides the reader through the complex history of monastic education in two neighbouring countries with very different Buddhist societies: Burma and Thailand. This book provides a clear account of the ways in which royal leaders and monastic institutions worked to develop monastic education in the face of changing political and economic conditions, including colonialism and the political instability of the 19th and 20th centuries. It studies influences from both British colonists and Siamese/Thai reformers, and engages with primary material, including documents from Burmese monasteries, royal orders, royal chronicles, and official government records. As the first book to examine monastic education in Burma and Thailand, this is a welcome contribution to the social, monastic and religious history of Southeast Asia, and the growing field of Burmese Buddhist Studies.

Book Synopsis The Province of Burma by : Alleyne Ireland
Download or read book The Province of Burma written by Alleyne Ireland and published by . This book was released on 1907 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alleyne Ireland (1871-1951) was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society in London who, in 1901, was appointed by the University of Chicago to head a commission to study colonial administration in the Far East. Ireland's first major project, published in 1907, was this exhaustive, two-volume study of Burma, at the time under British rule as a province of the Indian Empire. Volume one contains a general description of Burma, a history of Britain's acquisition of the colony, and chapters on the people, government, general administration, civil service, police administration, judicial administration, prison administration, and educational system. Volume two is devoted to economic and administrative affairs, including financial administration, the land revenue system, public works, trade and shipping, and the administration of forests, towns, villages, and harbors. Twenty-one appendices provide additional detail, including economic and demographic statistics, the texts of treaties, agreements, and reports, a bibliography, and a glossary of Indian and Burmese words. At the end of volume one is a large foldout map of Burma by Edinburgh mapmakers John Bartholomew & Co.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the history of the university in Burma, both as an institution founded by the colonizing British, and as a medium for change that was used by Burmese students in their struggles for independence. Aye Kyaw describes student protests, strikes, and boycotts that were part of a nationalist movement calling for the study of Burmese culture, history, and language. As this discourse evolved, it invited radical explorations of such concepts as democracy, justice, and freedom.
