Book excerpt: questions are discussed in this interesting study about what it is like to grow up gifted, the realities of school, the expectations of others, and the choices the gifted make in adulthood. Contemporary Psychology This volume summarizes a study designed to assess the outcomes of early identification and schooling for a group of highly gifted children. The subjects were graduates of one of America's most selective educational institutions, the Hunter College Elementary School (HCES). HCES developed as an outgrowth of a series of experiments and philosophical statements reflecting the political and social history of the United States in the first half of the 20th century, and was created in1941 to serve children with IQ scores at least two standard deviations above the mean. This book proposes that the reported reflections of individuals in their 40s and 50s, who were selected at approximately age 4 for special instruction on the basis of high IQ scores, can provide insight into the development of future educational options for gifted students. The objective is to contribute these unique perspectives to the literature that describes and analyzes the long-term outcomes of educational decisions concerning the identification and education of gifted children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades teachers and parents have accepted the judgment that some students just aren't good at math. John Mighton-the founder of a revolutionary math program designed to help failing math students-feels that not only is this wrong, but that it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A pioneering educator, Mighton realized several years ago that children were failing math because they had come to believe they were not good at it. Once students lost confidence in their math skills and fell behind, it was very difficult for them to catch up, particularly in the classroom. He knew this from experience, because he had once failed math himself. Using the premise that anyone can learn math and anyone can teach it, Mighton's unique teaching method isolates and describes concepts so clearly that students of all skill levels can understand them. Rather than fearing failure, students learn from and build on their own successes and gain the confidence and self-esteem they need to be inspired to learn. Mighton's methods, set forth in The Myth of Ability and implemented in hundreds of Canadian schools, have had astonishing results: Not only have they helped children overcome their fear of math, but the resulting confidence has led to improved reading and motor skills as well. The Myth of Ability will transform the way teachers and parents look at the teaching of mathematics and, by extension, the entire process of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gifted education is in a period of transition unlike any it has experienced in this generation. Thinkers within the field and without are questioning the practice of gifted education, the theoretical foundations on which this practice rests, and even the value and legitimacy of the concept of giftedness. This fresh and provocative volume contains essays by leading thinkers on gifted education and by writers outside the field who have examined it critically. Each author examines, reconsiders, and challenges the assumptions and beliefs underlying the theory and practice of gifted education, providing a "roadmap" to guide both current considerations of and future planning for gifted education programs.
