Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is long-standing debate on how population growth affects national economies. A new report from Population Matters examines the history of this debate and synthesizes current research on the topic. The authors, led by Harvard economist David Bloom, conclude that population age structure, more than size or growth per se, affects economic development, and that reducing high fertility can create opportunities for economic growth if the right kinds of educational, health, and labor-market policies are in place. The report also examines specific regions of the world and how their differing policy environments have affected the relationship between population change and economic development.

Download or read book The New Arab Wars written by Marc Lynch and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marc Lynch's last book, The Arab Uprising, described the then ongoing revolutionary change and prospect for the consolidation of democracy in key Arab countries that still seemed possible. But Lynch saw dark signs on the horizon, especially in Syria. That book ended with the hope that the Arab uprisings heralded a fundamental change over the long-term, but with the warning that Arab regimes would not easily give up their power. Instead, Egypt’s revolution has given way to a military coup; Libya’s produced a failed state; Yemen is the battleground for a proxy war and will be destroyed; Syria has become a sprawling humanitarian catastrophe that will take a generation to begin to recover from. At the same time, America has less and less reason to want to engage with the region and now has only one functional ally apart from Israel. The New Arab Wars describes how the political landscape of an entire region has been convulsed, with much of it given over to anarchy, as proxy wars on behalf of three competing powers—Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia—scar the region. It is a brutal, compelling story.
Book Synopsis Globalisation and Education by : Bob Lingard
Download or read book Globalisation and Education written by Bob Lingard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection focuses on education policy in the context of globalisation and draws together influential research dealing with the interplay between education policy and globalisation. Globalisation and neo-liberalism in relation to education policy are addressed, as is the impact of the global financial crisis, the recent rise of ethno-nationalism and progressive challenges to neo-liberal hegemony. A number of chapters deal with the new spatialities instantiated by globalisation's new technology, and consider the implications for education policy. Also discussed are global policy actors (such as the OECD, EU and edu-businesses) in education policy; the significance of international large scale assessments to an emergent global policy field; refugees and education; English language policy and globalisation; off-shore schools; and the importance of affect in policy in the context of globalisation. The collection closes with two methodological contributions that consider the implications of globalisation in today’s critical education policy analysis. The collection is brought together in a substantial introduction that traverses the literature and research on globalisation and education policy and also situates the chapters and approaches in the collection within the field. The chapters in this book were originally published as articles in various Taylor and Francis journals.
Book Synopsis Knowledge Acquisition, Modeling and Management by : Rudi Studer
Download or read book Knowledge Acquisition, Modeling and Management written by Rudi Studer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past, Present, and Future of Knowledge Acquisition This book contains the proceedings of the 11th European Workshop on Kno- edge Acquisition, Modeling, and Management (EKAW ’99), held at Dagstuhl Castle (Germany) in May of 1999. This continuity and the high number of s- missions re?ect the mature status of the knowledge acquisition community. Knowledge Acquisition started as an attempt to solve the main bottleneck in developing expert systems (now called knowledge-based systems): Acquiring knowledgefromahumanexpert. Variousmethodsandtoolshavebeendeveloped to improve this process. These approaches signi?cantly reduced the cost of - veloping knowledge-based systems. However, these systems often only partially ful?lled the taskthey weredevelopedfor andmaintenanceremainedanunsolved problem. This required a paradigm shift that views the development process of knowledge-based systems as a modeling activity. Instead of simply transf- ring human knowledge into machine-readable code, building a knowledge-based system is now viewed as a modeling activity. A so-called knowledge model is constructed in interaction with users and experts. This model need not nec- sarily re?ect the already available human expertise. Instead it should provide a knowledgelevelcharacterizationof the knowledgethat is requiredby the system to solve the application task. Economy and quality in system development and maintainability are achieved by reusable problem-solving methods and onto- gies. The former describe the reasoning process of the knowledge-based system (i. e. , the algorithms it uses) and the latter describe the knowledge structures it uses (i. e. , the data structures). Both abstract from speci?c application and domain speci?c circumstances to enable knowledge reuse.
Book Synopsis The Film Archipelago by : Antonio Gómez
Download or read book The Film Archipelago written by Antonio Gómez and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the islands and archipelagos of the New World figure in Latin American cinema? Comprising 15 essays and a critical introduction, The Film Archipelago: Islands in Latin American Cinema addresses this question by examining a series of intersections between insular spaces and filmmaking in Latin America. The volume brings together international scholars and filmmakers to consider a diverse corpus of films about islands, films that take place on islands, films produced in islands, and films that problematise islands. The book explores a diverse range of films that extend from the Chilean documentaries of Patricio Guzmán to work on the Malvinas/Falkland Islands, and films by Argentine directors Gustavo Fontán and Lucrecia Martel. Chapters focus on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the Mexican Islas Marías, and the Panamanian Caribbean; on ecocritical, environmental and film historical aspects of Brazilian and Argentine river islands; and on Cuban, Guadeloupean, Haitian, and Puerto Rican contexts. The Film Archipelago argues that the islands and archipelagos of Latin American cinema constitute a critically interesting, analytically complex, and historically suggestive angle to explore issues of marginality and peripherality, remoteness and isolation, and fragility and dependency. As a whole, the collection demonstrates to what extent the combined insular and archipelagic lens can re-frame and re-figure both longstanding and recent discussions on the spaces of Latin American cinema.
Book Synopsis Global Pathways to Education by : Kerstin Martens
Download or read book Global Pathways to Education written by Kerstin Martens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this open access volume, the editors identify the trajectories and patterns displayed by education systems and investigate the causes of change from a global and historical perspective. The contributors argue that the emergence and development of education systems can be traced back to inherent national factors, as well as to the international diffusion of ideas. The research presented in this volume is a wide-ranging analysis and explanation of the dynamics of emergence, diffusion, and change in relation to state education systems. The chapters offer an empirical investigation into whether the global diffusion of Western-rational educational content and organizational forms occurs as expected by neoinstitutionalist theory, or whether culturally specific developmental paths dominate in different parts of the world. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in various social science disciplines, including social policy, education, sociology, political science, international relations, organizational theory, and economics.
Book Synopsis Gender and Education by : Madeleine Arnot
Download or read book Gender and Education written by Madeleine Arnot and published by . This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the field of gender and education today requires thinking more critically about paradigmatic models of gender and their goals for educational and social reform. It involves recognizing that the international project of the women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s has had a deep influence in many countries, not just in those which are income rich. In this context, it is important to think critically and analytically about how gender is conceptualized in both international and national policy making and research and the ways in which gender analysis in education can now contribute to the creation of emancipatory forms of gender relations, and global gender justice. The aim of this introductory text from international authority Madeleine Arnot, is to understand where the field of gender and education is located at present, its strengths and weaknesses in terms of foci, its theoretical advance, its methodological sophistication and its policy relevance and impacts. It provides a concise but comprehensive introduction to the progressive discussions in feminist theory and the role of education in relation to the structuring of familial, institutional, political and economic sites. The book concludes by considering some of the contemporary challenges which gender and education as a field of scholarship and political action face in the context of international and global developments. Ideal for courses in education studies, sociology, gender studies, women’s studies, development studies, this valuable teaching resource is essential reading for anyone who wishes to read more about the controversies associated with gender issues in education and society.
