Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This second edition of a well-established textbook provides an introduction to the wide range of skills employed in making and using maps. Starting with the essentials of all cartography -- scales and location -- Cartographic Methods treats in turn the main features of both topographic and thematic mapping. Attention is also paid to some of the special problems faced by the cartographer, for instance in materials, equipment and techniques. The author considers the map as a medium of communication, and suggests methods for analysis and interpretation. Examples have been drawn from map series of several countries to supplement the many illustrations specially prepared for this new edition." -- Publisher's description
Book Synopsis Plantation and Civility in the North Atlantic World by : Aonghas MacCoinnich
Download or read book Plantation and Civility in the North Atlantic World written by Aonghas MacCoinnich and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The settlement of the Hebrides is usually considered in terms of the state formation agenda. Yet the area was subject to successive attempts at plantation, largely overlooked in historical narrative. Aonghas MacCoinnich’s study, Plantation and Civility, explores these plantations against the background of a Lowland-Highland cultural divide and competition over resources. The Macleod of Lewis clan, ‘uncivil’, Gaelic Highlanders, were dispossessed by the Lowland, ‘civil,’ Fife Adventurers, 1598-1609. Despite the collapse of this Lowland Plantation, however, the recourse to the Mackenzie clan, often thought a failure of policy, was instead a pragmatic response to an intractable problem. The Mackenzies also pursued the civility agenda treating with Dutch partners and fending off their English rivals in order to develop their plantation.

Book Synopsis The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume 3 by : C. S. Lewis
Download or read book The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume 3 written by C. S. Lewis and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 1844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, carefully chosen and arranged by Walter Hooper, is the most extensive ever published. Included here are the letters Lewis wrote to such luminaries as J.R.R. Tolkien, Owen Barfield, Arthur C. Clarke, Sheldon Vanauken, and Dom Bede Griffiths. To some particular friends, such as Dorothy L. Sayers, Lewis wrote fifty letters alone. The letters deal with all of Lewis's interests—theology, literary criticism, poetry, fantasy, children's stories—as well as his relationships with family members and friends. The third and final volume begins with Lewis, already a household name from his BBC radio broadcasts and popular spiritual books, on the cusp of publishing his most famous and enduring book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which would ensure his immortality in the literary world. It covers his relationship with and marriage to Joy Davidman Gresham, subject of the film Shadowlands, and includes letters right up to his death on November 22, 1963, the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. This volume also includes both a special section of newly found letters from earlier time periods covered in volumes one and two and mini-biographies of Lewis's regular correspondents.
Download or read book @tuambabies written by Brian Nugent and published by Brian Nugent. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2014, and later again in spring 2017, a scandal arose in relation to the Tuam Children's Home in Galway in Ireland. It was alleged that the nuns who looked after children there from 1925-61 had maltreated them. This second edition book casts a critical eye on the local history methodology underpinning the scandal. It examines in detail: the mapping of the burial sites; the statistical traps overlooked; the widely misinterpreted 2017 statement of the Mother and Baby Commission; the Oral History of the Home; and the vexed questions of money and food. Extensive appendices also expand on the recorded history of the Home, the personnel employed there, three detailed eyewitness accounts, and a comprehensive history of the Tuam workhouse. It also contains a valuable foreword by Fr Paul Churchill.
