Book excerpt: This book documents the research I conducted on the subject of Electronic Data Inter change during my time at the Institute of Business Informatics, University of Berne, Switzerland. In this effort I enjoyed a great deal of help from numerous others, in cluding professional colleagues, interview partners, and members of my family. Even though I cannot possibly mention them all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for their selfless support. Above all, I am grateful to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Knolmayer who contributed to the book both in its formative stages and throughout its development. He has been an unwavering source of encouragement during the many difficult stages of the investigation and I greatly benefitted from our discussions of the subject matter. Moreover, he was ex tremely generous with his time in carefully reviewing all the five chapters. The fmancial support for this book came from the Hasler Foundation in Berne. I wish to thank the Foundation, and especially its Managing Director, Dr. P.A. Jaeger, for funding the empirical part of the research project. Likewise, I am grateful to the Uni versity of Berne for providing me with the necessary computer and other resources. The Institute of Business Informatics should be commended particularly for its very stim ulating work environment.

Book Synopsis Managing with Information Technology by : Richard Ennals
Download or read book Managing with Information Technology written by Richard Ennals and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of business and management, and of infor mation technology, is being employed across all sectors of economic and social activity. In recent years computers and information technology (IT) in general have moved from being a scarce resource to being a more generally available commodity, without a corresponding increase in understanding of how the new generation of tools can be used. IT is available on individual desktops, supporting decision making and communication, but often conven tional organizations have failed to adapt, individuals lack competence and confidence, and senior managers lack both the strategic insight to develop appropriate strategies and the humility to accept that they need to learn. As each sector, whether business, education, public sec tor management or the community and voluntary sector, realizes that the potential of IT is not being exploited to the full, calls are issued for the development of new "hybrid managers", a term coined to describe the gap in understanding and competence that is to be filled. The two editors work in the hybrid field of business information technology, which is a melting pot of ideas and experience from numerous traditional disciplines. The pace of change is such that no one individual could ever be abreast of all technical and business develop ments, but the field is now sufficiently mature for us to identify certain underlying issues and principles, and areas of research for the coming years.

Book Synopsis Open EDI and Law in Europe by : Andreas Mitrakas
Download or read book Open EDI and Law in Europe written by Andreas Mitrakas and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic commerce applications all allow the transfer of electronic data from one point to another. Open EDI--a particular application of electronic commerce--also permits commercial transactions to take place in a fully automated and highly organised trading environment. This volume focuses on open EDI and its relationship with law. When confronted with technology, the typical reaction of the law is to support interpretations and amendments of existing statutes so that old laws can accommodate the change. Open EDI, however, does not fit within this traditional regulatory method. Open EDI permits ad hoc open electronic transactions irrespective of geographical border and jurisdictions among trading partners with no prior trade relationship. By doing so, open EDI limits the possibility of using up-front interchange agreements to address the legal problems of the interchange. It therefore requires the use of legal instruments supported by information technology to overcome legal problems. Openness in an electronic environment has the potential to initiate an unobserved change in law. Possible regulations should address users' need to act in such a trading environment without the inhibition of basic legal concerns. Open EDI and Law in Europe concludes that the challenge of open EDI necessitates working toward a new legal framework based on international law and supported by information technology. This volume will assist lawyers and laypersons concerned with the practical and theoretical aspects of the legal issues of the application of open EDI by pointing out subtle issues in the application of law in this area and by provoking thought regarding possible solutions.

Book Synopsis Network Re-engineering by : Alan Simon
Download or read book Network Re-engineering written by Alan Simon and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Network Re-Engineering: Foundations of Enterprise Computing deals with the aspects of an organization's information systems and communications assets. This book reviews the foundations of enterprise computing including servers, client/server computing, local area networks, user interfaces, and emerging cross-platform development. The coverage of an enterprise computing system needs efficient communication facilities over which interoperability and information sharing devices can operate. This text explains the basic technologies and services that an enterprise computing environment requires: protocol stacks, communications technologies, fundamental interoperability. For example, electronic mail must conform to the CCITTX.400 specifications. Electronic mail systems include message handling, message typing or protocols, naming and addressing, and distribution lists. The book discusses two types of architectures for enterprise computing, namely, the OSE/1 APP and the CA09s. This text also notes that developing enterprise-class applications can be either through a direct development that meet the requirements of the enterprise or through migration of an existing system to a new one. This book can prove useful for programmers, systems officers, computer engineering instructors, and advanced students in computer science.
