It is strange that this remains largely the case even though we now know how to solve directly, with the help of sufficiently large and powerful computers, accurate approximations to the equations that govern tur bulent flows. The problem lies not with our numerical approximations but with the size of the computational task and the complexity of the solutions we gen erate, which match the complexity of real turbulence precisely in so far as the computations mimic the real flows. The fact that we can now solve some turbu lence in this limited sense is nevertheless an enormous step towards the goal of full understanding. Direct and large-eddy simulations are these numerical solutions of turbulence. They reproduce with remarkable fidelity the statistical, structural and dynamical properties of physical turbulent and transitional flows, though since the simula tions are necessarily time-dependent and three-dimensional they demand the most advanced computer resources at our disposal. The numerical techniques vary from accurate spectral methods and high-order finite differences to simple finite-volume algorithms derived on the principle of embedding fundamental conservation prop erties in the numerical operations. Genuine direct simulations resolve all the fluid motions fully, and require the highest practical accuracy in their numerical and temporal discretisation. Such simulations have the virtue of great fidelity when carried out carefully, and repre sent a most powerful tool for investigating the processes of transition to turbulence.

Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is routinely used in performance prediction and design of aircraft, turbomachinery, automobiles, and in many other industrial applications. Despite its wide range of use, deficiencies in its prediction accuracy still exist. One critical weakness is the accurate simulation of complex turbulent flows using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. The goal of this research has been to develop an eddy viscosity type turbulence model to increase the accuracy of flow simulations for mildly separated flows, flows with rotation and curvature effects, and flows with surface roughness. It is accomplished by developing a new zonal one-equation turbulence model which relies heavily on the flow physics; it is now known in the literature as the Wray-Agarwal one-equation turbulence model. The effectiveness of the new model is demonstrated by comparing its results with those obtained by the industry standard one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model and two-equation Shear-Stress-Transport k -- [omega] model and experimental data. Results for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows in and about complex geometries are presented. It is demonstrated that the Wray-Agarwal model can provide the industry and CFD researchers an accurate, efficient, and reliable turbulence model for the computation of a large class of complex turbulent flows.

Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are beginning to emerge as the state-of-the art for turbulence modeling in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), but due to current computational constraints, the need will continue to exist for a lower fidelity, yet robust set of Reynolds-Averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. Many of these turbulence models are based off of the classic Boussinesq approximation which relates the mean flow stresses to the turbulent eddy viscosity. The traditional Boussinesq approximation relies upon the instantaneous strain rate which may produce large errors in solutions for flows with significant changes in strain (such as areas of massive separation and re-attachment). The unstructured Navier-Stokes solver AVUS is modified using a new method developed by Peter E. Hamlington and Werner J. A. Dahm which replaces the classic Boussinesq approximation with a new non-equilibrium closure technique. The new non-equilibrium k omega turbulence model modification takes into account the time history of the strain rate by modifying the eddy viscosity term found in the k omega Wilcox turbulence model. Computational results from this new model are compared to experimental data from numerous test cases which include a two-dimensional flat plate, NACA 0012 airfoil, RAE 2822 transonic airfoil, and a fully three-dimensional unmanned aerial vehicle. The results of the new model are encouraging since they are more closely correlating to experimental data.
