Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What kind of Church arises from the Lord's table?" "Doctrine, customs, culture, and history divide the Churches. Christians do not share a common table. Can a divided and injured Church celebrate the Eucharist, the sacrament of Christian communion?" "These are a few of the questions addressed in this study of the ecclesiology of communion. The "borderless" Church of the infinite love of Christ exists today. The divided Churches need only receive the communion of God as their innermost nature - at the borderless table of God's kingdom."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecumenical & Interreligious Perspectives: Globalization in Theological Education is a collection of articles on the wide-ranging effects of ecumenism on theological education. Fifteen eminent historians, theologians, missiologists, Christian educators, and ecumenists in the United Methodist Church and other denominations have addressed such topics as the critical redefinition of ecumenism, global inclusiveness, and the cultural assumptions implicit in interreligious dialogue. These important essays show that the seminaries are responding to the new global awareness with vigor and sensitivity. Together, they give us a picture of theological education that is spiritually and intellectually prepared to face the challenges of the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis One Baptism by : World Council of Churches
Download or read book One Baptism written by World Council of Churches and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the most recent contribution to the churches' quest for Christian unity, One Baptism was a decade in the making. It is a study document from the World Council of Churches' Commission on Faith and Order that invites further dialogue among Christians concerning baptism within the One Church of Jesus Christ. This new book finds inspiration most directly from the 1982 Agreed Statement Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) and the churches' responses to it. The book explores the close relationship between baptism and the believer's lifelong growth in Christ, suggesting that this link provides a strong argument for greater mutual recognition of baptism. One Baptism also addresses issues in baptismal understanding and practice that cause controversies within and among churches and hinder mutual recognition. (Series: Faith and Order Papers - No. 210)
Book Synopsis Recovering the Evangelical Sacrament by : Anthony R. Cross
Download or read book Recovering the Evangelical Sacrament written by Anthony R. Cross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of baptism continues to be of considerable interest--though it frequently appears within broader studies of sacraments, liturgy, worship, and ecumenical studies, and within confessional bounds: credobaptist or paedobaptist--yet it is rarely discussed by Evangelicals. This book, however, is neither an apologetic for credobaptism nor paedobaptism; rather Cross believes that, as practiced today, both forms are a departure from New Testament baptism, which, he maintains, was an integral part of becoming a Christian and part of the proclaimed gospel. He argues that the "one baptism" of Ephesians 4:5 is conversion-baptism and that the baptism referred to in the various New Testament strata refers to this "one baptism" (of Spirit and water). The study sets out the case for this interpretation and contends that in key passages "baptism" is an example of synecdoche. The case is then made for a sacramental interpretation of baptism from a thoroughgoing Evangelical perspective. Cross concludes with reflections on the necessity of baptismal reform and the relevance of a return to conversion-baptism for the contemporary church in a post-Christian, post-Christendom, mission setting.
Book Synopsis Apostolicity Then and Now by : John J. Burkhard
Download or read book Apostolicity Then and Now written by John J. Burkhard and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, what did the Church and theologians mean by apostolicity, apostolic tradition, apostolic churches, and apostolic succession? Theologically, what have important postconciliar theologians taught about apostolicity? How have world views shaped the understanding of apostolicity? How might the thesis of the apostolicity of the whole Church impact other ecclesiological and sacramental issues? Ecumenically, what are the points of agreement in several important ecumenical dialogues? Which points are disputed among the churches? Apostolicity Then and Now addresses these concerns.
