Book excerpt: After a seminar, the most frequently heard comment is "I'm constantly learning something new about exporting and this book will help be a great resource for me." Changes occur quickly in the global market. The changes that affect exporters are presented in an easy to read format on export documentation, procedures and controls. Whether you are a seasoned exporter or new to export, this book provides you with tips, information, resources and ideas that are easy to use. The book opens with a much needed and helpful introduction on structuring foreign sales, including a detailed discussion of the crucial distinctions between foreign sales reps, agents and distributors. Other topics include contract negotiation issues, Incoterms 2000, pricing, customs and tariff planning. This includes a full section on the use of SEDs;forms of payment; packing, transport, and insurance compliance. Sample documents are shown and the volume's glossary has a full list of government and private export resources and contact numbers, along with an excellent index of definitions of trade terms. This is a book with exercises and examples designed to assist the exporter in: * selecting Schedule B numbers and INCOTERMS, * Preparing quotations and documentation for export shipments by air and ocean freight, * understanding the basics of international transportation, carriers and tariffs, and * defining how the current Export Administration Regulations affect each exporter. It is a reference book, a handbook and a guide to resources. In June 1999. IOMA's Report on Managing Exports said that this is a Must Item for Your Export Library!

Book excerpt: Since 2010, the ECE has been undertaking demand-driven national studies of regulatory and procedural barriers to trade, with a view to: helping countries achieve greater regional and global economic integration; informing donors as to where assistance might be required; and supporting policy discussions within the Steering Committee on Trade Capacity and Standards (previously, the Committee on Trade) and its subsidiary bodies on where additional work is required. This study summarizes the key findings of the seventh study, which focuses on Georgia. It was prepared by the ECE secretariat in close consultation with public and private sector stakeholders. The study integrates the outcome of the stakeholder meeting, which was organized in Tbilisi, Georgia on 23 April 2018 by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development to discuss the initial results and recommendations.

Book excerpt: In many countries, a sizable share of international trade is carried out by intermediaries. While large firms tend to export to foreign markets directly, smaller firms typically export via intermediaries (indirect exporting). I document a set of facts that characterize the dynamic nature of indirect exporting using firm-level data from Vietnam and develop a dynamic trade model with both direct and indirect exporting modes and customer accumulation. The model is calibrated to match the dynamic moments of the data. The calibration yields fixed costs of indirect exporting that are less than a third of those of direct exporting, the variable costs of indirect exporting are twice higher, and demand for the indirectly exported products grows more slowly. Decomposing the gains from indirect and direct exporting, I find that 18 percent of the gains from trade in Vietnam are generated by indirect exporters. Finally, I demonstrate that a dynamic model that excludes the indirect exporting channel will overstate the welfare gains associated with trade liberalization by a factor of two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does what economies export matter for development? If so, can industrial policies improve on the export basket generated by the market? This book approaches these questions from a variety of conceptual and policy viewpoints. Reviewing the theoretical arguments in favor of industrial policies, the authors first ask whether existing indicators allow policy makers to identify growth-promoting sectors with confidence. To this end, they assess, and ultimately cast doubt upon, the reliability of many popular indicators advocated by proponents of industrial policy. Second, and central to their critique, the authors document extraordinary differences in the performance of countries exporting seemingly identical products, be they natural resources or 'high-tech' goods. Further, they argue that globalization has so fragmented the production process that even talking about exported goods as opposed to tasks may be misleading. Reviewing evidence from history and from around the world, the authors conclude that policy makers should focus less on what is produced, and more on how it is produced. They analyze alternative approaches to picking winners but conclude by favoring 'horizontal-ish' policies--for instance, those that build human capital or foment innovation in existing and future products—that only incidentally favor some sectors over others.
