Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the seventh European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP '93). The conference attracted 146 submissions from around the world, and the selected papers range in topic from programming language and database issues to analysis and design and reuse, and from experience reports to theoretical contributions. The volume opens with an abstract of the keynote address, "Intimate computing and the memory prosthesis: a challenge for computer systems research?" by M.G. Lamming, and continueswith selected papers organized into parts on framework and reuse, concurrency and distribution, types and subtypes, languages and inheritance,time-dependent behavior, object-oriented analysis and design, and reflection. The volume also contains an invited talk, "The OSI manager-object model" by C. Ashford, and the position statements from a panel discussion.

Book excerpt: Interest has grown rapidly over the past dozen years in the application of object-oriented programming and methods to the development of distributed, open systems. This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop intended to assess the current state of research in this field and to facilitate interaction between groups working on very different aspects of object-oriented distributed systems. The workshop was held as part of the 1993 European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP '93). Over fifty people submitted position papers and participated in the workshop, and almost half presented papers. The presented papers were carefully reviewed and revised after the workshop, and 14 papers were selected for this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now more than twenty-five years since object-oriented programming was “inve- ed” (actually, more than thirty years since work on Simula started), but, by all accounts, it would appear as if object-oriented technology has only been “discovered” in the past ten years! When the first European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming was held in Paris in 1987, I think it was generally assumed that Object-Oriented Progr- ming, like Structured Programming, would quickly enter the vernacular, and that a c- ference on the subject would rapidly become superfluous. On the contrary, the range and impact of object-oriented approaches and methods continues to expand, and, - spite the inevitable oversell and hype, object-oriented technology has reached a level of scientific maturity that few could have foreseen ten years ago. Object-oriented technology also cuts across scientific cultural boundaries like p- haps no other field of computer science, as object-oriented concepts can be applied to virtually all the other areas and affect virtually all aspects of the software life cycle. (So, in retrospect, emphasizing just Programming in the name of the conference was perhaps somewhat short-sighted, but at least the acronym is pronounceable and easy to rem- ber!) This year’s ECOOP attracted 146 submissions from around the world - making the selection process even tougher than usual. The selected papers range in topic from programming language and database issues to analysis and design and reuse, and from experience reports to theoretical contributions.

Book excerpt: This Festschrift volume contains 28 refereed papers including personal memories, essays, and regular research papers by close collaborators and friends of José Meseguer to honor him on the occasion of his 65th birthday. These papers were presented at a symposium at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on September 23-25, 2015. The symposium also featured invited talks by Claude and Hélène Kirchner and by Patrick Lincoln. The foreword of this volume adds a brief overview of some of José's many scientific achievements followed by a bibliography of papers written by José.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possible benefits, the external characteristics, and the broad-range requirements of information infrastructure systems for intelligent manufacturing systems are widely known. However, it is recognized that various problems are impeding achievement in this area, including the lack of understanding and agreement about techniques and methods for coordinating and systematizing the broad-range information processing requirements , and for synthesizing these requirements into deeply structured, easily adaptable and comprehensive conceptual models . This hampers the development of information infrastructures amalgamating the conceptual models and computing/communication/storage technologies, and the development of intelligent manufacturing systems amalgamating the information infrastructures with advanced machine tools and skillful people. This publication elaborates on these issues and affords a greater understanding of, and agreement about, methods, techniques and tools for solving related problems. To ensure an in-depth coverage of the wide problem domain, contributions, sourced from reknowned experts, are focused on some of the most relevant research and development issues. The book will provide a useful foundation of information for further research and development on information infrastructure systems for manufacturing.

Book excerpt: "This volume presents the proceedings of the fifth Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE '93, held at the University of Paris-Sorbonne in June 1993. Initiated by J. Bubenko from the Swedish Institute for Systems Development in Stockhom, Sweden, and A. Solvberg from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim, Norway, this series of conferences evolved from a Nordic audience to a truly European one. All the conferences have attracted international papers of high quality, indicating the needfor an international conference on advanced information systems engineering topics. The spectrum of contributions contained in the present proceedings extends from inevitable and still controversial issues regarding modeling of information systems, via development environments and experiences, to various novel views forsome specific aspects of information systems development such as reuse, schema integration, and evolution.'--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.
