Book excerpt: This year, for the eighth time, the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) series, in cooperation with Springer, is glad to o?er the object-oriented research community the ECOOP 2004 Workshop Reader, a compendium of workshop reports pertaining to the ECOOP 2004 conference, held in Oslo from June 15 to 19, 2004. ECOOP 2004 hosted 19 high-quality workshops covering a large spectrum of hot research topics. These workshops were chosen through a tight peer review process following a speci?c call for proposals ending on November 30, 2003. We are very grateful to the members of the Workshop Selection Committee for their careful reviews and hard work to put together the excellent workshop program. We also want to thank all submitters, accepted or not, to whom the workshop program equally owes its quality. This selection process was then followed by a selection of workshop participants, done by each team of organizers based on an open call for position papers. This participant selection process ensured that we gathered the most active researchers in each workshop research area, and therefore a fruitful working meeting. Following the tradition of the ECOOP Workshop Reader, we strove for hi- quality, value-adding and open-ended workshop reports. The result, as you can judgefromthefollowingpages,isathought-provokingsnapshotofthecurrent- searchinobject-orientation,fullofpointersforfurtherexplorationofthecovered topics. We want to thank our workshop organizers who, despite the additional burden, did a great job in putting together these reports.

Book excerpt: ECOOP is the premier forum in Europe for bringing together practitioners, - searchers, and students to share their ideas and experiences in a broad range of disciplines woven with the common thread of object technology. It is a collage of events, including outstanding invited speakers, carefully refereed technical - pers, practitioner reports re?ecting real-world experience, panels, topic-focused workshops, demonstrations, and an interactive posters session. The 18th ECOOP 2004 conference held during June 14–18, 2004 in Oslo, Norway represented another year of continued success in object-oriented p- gramming, both as a topic of academic study and as a vehicle for industrial software development. Object-oriented technology has come of age; it is now the commonly established method for most software projects. However, an - panding ?eld of applications and new technological challenges provide a strong demand for research in foundations, design and programming methods, as well as implementation techniques. There is also an increasing interest in the in- gration of object-orientation with other software development techniques. We anticipate therefore that object-oriented programming will be a fruitful subject of research for many years to come. These were complemented by two invited talks, from Matthias Felleisen and Tom Henzinger. Their titles and abstracts are also included in these proceedings.

Book excerpt: The 19th Annual Meeting of the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming—ECOOP 2005—took place during the last week of July in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. This volume includes the refereed technical papers p- sented at the conference, and two invited papers. It is traditional to preface a volume of proceedings such as this with a note that emphasizes the importance of the conference in its respective ?eld. Although such self-evaluations should always be taken with a large grain of salt, ECOOP is undisputedly the pre- inent conference on object-orientation outside of the United States. In its turn, object-orientationis today’s principaltechnology not only for programming, but also for design, analysisand speci?cation of softwaresystems. As a consequence, ECOOP has expanded far beyond its roots in programming to encompass all of these areas of research—whichis why ECOOP has remained such an interesting conference. But ECOOP is more than an interesting conference. It is the nucleus of a technical and academic community, a community whose goals are the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. Chance meetings at ECOOP have helped to spawn collaborations that span the boundaries of our many subdisciplines, bring together researchers and practitioners, cross cultures, and reach from one side of the world to the other. The ubiquity of fast electronic communication has made maintaining these collaborations easier than we would have believed possible only a dozen years ago. But the role of conferences like ECOOP in establishing collaborations has not diminished.

The conference continues to serve a broad object-oriented community with a tech- cal program spanning theory and practice and a healthy mix of industrial and academic participants. This year a strong workshop and tutorial program c- plementedthemaintechnicaltrack.Wehad13workshopsand8tutorials,aswell as the co-located Dynamic Language Symposium (DLS). Finally, the program was rounded out with a keynote by Rachid Guerraoui and a banquet speech by James Noble. As in previous years, two Dahl-Nygaard awards were selected by AITO, and for the ?rst time, the ECOOP Program Committee gave a best paper award. Theproceedingsinclude27papersselectedfrom138submissions.Thepapers werereviewed in a single-blind process with three to ?ve reviews per paper. P- liminaryversionsofthereviewsweremadeavailabletotheauthorsaweekbefore the PC meeting to allow for short (500 words or less) author responses. The - sponses were discussed at the PC meeting and were instrumental in reaching decisions. The PC discussions followed Oscar Nierstrasz’Champion pattern. PC papers had ?ve reviews and were held at a higher standard.

Thanks to the local organizersfor working hard on arranging the conference — with the hard work they put in, it was a great success. Thanks to Sophia Drossopoulou for her dedicated work as PC Chair in assembling a ?ne scienti?c program including forward-looking keynotes, and for her e?orts to reduce the environmental impact of the PC meeting by replacing a physical meeting with a virtual meeting. I would also like to thank James Noble for taking the time and e?ort to write up last year’s banquet speech so that it could be included in this year’s proceedings. One of the strong features of ECOOPis the two days of workshopspreceding themainconferencethatallowsintenseinteractionbetweenparticipants. Thanks to all workshop organizers. This year’s Dahl-Nygaard award honored yet another pioneer in the ?eld, namely, David Ungar for his contributions includingSelf. I appreciate his e?orts in providing us with an excellent award talk. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the sixth European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP), held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, June 29 - July 3, 1992. Since the "French initiative" to organize the first conference in Paris, ECOOP has been a very successful forum for discussing the state of the art of object orientation. ECOOP has been able to attract papers of a high scientific quality as well as high quality experience papers describing the pros and cons of using object orientation in practice. This duality between theory and practice within object orientation makes a good example of experimental computer science. The volume contains 24 papers, including two invited papers and 22 papers selected by the programme committee from 124 submissions. Each submitted paper was reviewed by 3-4 people, and the selection of papers was based only on the quality of the papers themselves.
