Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marketing Sugar Beets, Vol. 137: November 1956 Since 1952, the costs of marketing beet sugar appear to have ih ased sharply for factories in some areas, and there is considerable =ling in the industry that the difficulties of marketing also have reseed; that is, that competition has become keener. In addition the feeling of increasing economic pressure on the industry, some t growers' groups have felt their contracts with processors made am vulnerable to bearing too much of the increases in costs of mar ing. The principal increase in marketing difficulties appears, rever, to be the trend toward increasing marketing costs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics of Sugar-Beet Mechanization in California A reduction in the amount of human labor required to produce a crop usually means lower cost of production. Hence, farmers have sought opportunities of substituting mechanical power for human power, and mechanization has become characteristic of farming in the United States. Mechanization, however, has come very slowly in the produc tion of sugar beets. Harvesting of sugar beets is now largely mechanized in California and is making rapid progress elsewhere, but much labor still is used in thinning the seedling stand and in hoeing. Mechanization of these operations, although it seems eventually assured, is progressing more slowly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Entomology of the Sugar Beet It must not be inferred, however, that the beet plant is especially liable to insect injury. On the contrary, taking the country at large, it is at present less subject to such damage than corn or wheat, cabbage or potatoes. It is a fact particularly favorable to this crop that the marketable part of the plant is but little subject to injury by insects, by far the greater part of the species which feed on it infesting only the leaf, and relatively few injuring the root. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sugar-Beet in America Sugar, which was once a luxury, has become a necessity in modern dietaries. The civilized nations have become so accustomed to its use as an important food that great inconvenience is experienced if it cannot be had or if the supply is reduced. This has made sugar-producing plants almost as staple as those from which bread is derived. As a result, sugar-beets, in the past century, have won an im portant place among the profitable mom of the temperate zone. In most of the European countries they have been raised extensively, whereas in America their growth has been confined to a comparatively few localities. In re cent years, however, the area has been greatly extended, and increased interest has been taken in establishing a domestic beet-sugar industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beet-Sugar Industry in the United States Sugar beets are no harder upon the soil than are the other crops generally grown; all require the same plant foods in slightly differ ent proportions. If not supplied with the material removed by the various crops or if the plant foods in the soil are not made available by the application of humus and by proper cultivation, the soil be comes worn and infertile, and the yields of all crops, including sugar beets, are greatly reduced. Quality of the soil - Soils vary widely in their original qualities, both physical and chemical. All agricultural soils are supplied in varying proportions with the necessary plant foods for crop pro duction. Soils that have plant food present in great abundance may be said to be rich. They are not fertile, however, unless these plant foods are in soluble form or unless they are rendered soluble as rapidly as the various materials are required by the plant in the process of growth. The quality of the soil from the standpoint of fertility may be greatly improved by proper cultivation, cr0p rota tion, and the addition of humus, as well as by the application of lime or other material that will improve its physical condition. In Special cases special treatments, such as subsoiling and drainage, are needed to make the soil highly productive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Beet-Sugar Industry and the Tariff The limitations of a study of this kind are such that only a few of the principal problems involved can be set forth, even in outline. Hence, most attention has been paid to the three main factors which will determine the future development of the domestic beet-sugar industry, namely: agricultural conditions, cane-sugar competition and modifying legislation. Suits, legislation and other matters now pending may soon render obsolete certain parts of anything which may be written, but the funda mental facts and principles involved are not subject to such rapid change, even in the case of matters so highly dynamic as those here under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beet Sugar Industry The manufacturer has a task that calls for capital, technical skill and business capacity, and every locality or country in which an industry is established may have conditions which call for the study of a new problem. In our own country, for example, it was found that the cold climate made it difficult except at large cost to protect stores of beets against winter frosts, and that if roots thawed before the sugar contents were extracted their value was lost. 'this meant a comparatively short campaign for the factory, and a long period of idleness before the next season's crop was harvested; and capital must always be at great odds when so employed.
