Book excerpt: Russell Cooper and Andrew John have written an economics text aimed directly at students from its very inception. You?re thinking, "Yeah, sure. I?ve heard that before." This textbook, Economics: Theory Through Applications, centers around student needs and expectations through two premises:? Students are motivated to study economics if they see that it relates to their own lives.? Students learn best from an inductive approach, in which they are first confronted with a problem, and then led through the process of solving that problem. Many books claim to present economics in a way that is digestible for students; Russell and Andrew have truly created one from scratch. This textbook will assist you in increasing students? economic literacy both by developing their aptitude for economic thinking and by presenting key insights about economics that every educated individual should know. How? Russell and Andrew have done three things in this text to accomplish that goal: Applications Ahead of Theory: They present all the theory that is standard in Principles books. But by beginning with applications, students get to learn why this theory is needed. Learning through Repetition: Important tools appear over and over again, allowing students to learn from repetition and to see how one framework can be useful in many different contexts. A Student?s Table of Contents vs. An Instructor?s Table of Contents: There is no further proof that Russell and Andrew have created a book aimed specifically at educating students about economics than their two tables of contents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis By Sydsaeter, Hammond, Seierstad and Strom "Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis" is a companion volume to the highly regarded "E""ssential Mathematics for Economic Analysis" by Knut Sydsaeter and Peter Hammond. The new book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate economics students whose requirements go beyond the material usually taught in undergraduate mathematics courses for economists. It presents most of the mathematical tools that are required for advanced courses in economic theory -- both micro and macro. This second volume has the same qualities that made the previous volume so successful. These include mathematical reliability, an appropriate balance between mathematics and economic examples, an engaging writing style, and as much mathematical rigour as possible while avoiding unnecessary complications. Like the earlier book, each major section includes worked examples, as well as problems that range in difficulty from quite easy to more challenging. Suggested solutions to odd-numbered problems are provided. Key Features - Systematic treatment of the calculus of variations, optimal control theory and dynamic programming. - Several early chapters review and extend material in the previous book on elementary matrix algebra, multivariable calculus, and static optimization. - Later chapters present multiple integration, as well as ordinary differential and difference equations, including systems of such equations. - Other chapters include material on elementary topology in Euclidean space, correspondences, and fixed point theorems. A website is available which will include solutions to even-numbered problems (available to instructors), as well as extra problems and proofs of some of the more technical results. Peter Hammond is Professor of Economics at Stanford University. He is a prominent theorist whose many research publications extend over several different fields of economics. For many years he has taught courses in mathematics for economists and in mathematical economics at Stanford, as well as earlier at the University of Essex and the London School of Economics. Knut Sydsaeter, Atle Seierstad, and Arne Strom all have extensive experience in teaching mathematics for economists in the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo. With Peter Berck at Berkeley, Knut Sydsaeter and Arne Strom have written a widely used formula book, "Economists' Mathematical Manual "(Springer, 2000). The 1987 North-Holland book "Optimal Control Theory for Economists "by Atle Seierstad and Knut Sydsaeter is still a standard reference in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a while the world astonishes itself. Anxious incredulity replaces intellectual torpor and a puzzled public strains its antennae in every possible direction, desperately seeking explanations for the causes and nature of what just hit it. 2008 was such a moment. Not only did the financial system collapse, and send the real economy into a tailspin, but it also revealed the great gulf separating economics from a very real capitalism. Modern Political Economics has a single aim: To help readers make sense of how 2008 came about and what the post-2008 world has in store. The book is divided into two parts. The first part delves into every major economic theory, from Aristotle to the present, with a determination to discover clues of what went wrong in 2008. The main finding is that all economic theory is inherently flawed. Any system of ideas whose purpose is to describe capitalism in mathematical or engineering terms leads to inevitable logical inconsistency; an inherent error that stands between us and a decent grasp of capitalist reality. The only scientific truth about capitalism is its radical indeterminacy, a condition which makes it impossible to use science's tools (e.g. calculus and statistics) to second-guess it. The second part casts an attentive eye on the post-war era; on the breeding ground of the Crash of 2008. It distinguishes between two major post-war phases: The Global Plan (1947-1971) and the Global Minotaur (1971-2008). This dynamic new book delves into every major economic theory and maps out meticulously the trajectory that global capitalism followed from post-war almost centrally planned stability, to designed disintegration in the 1970s, to an intentional magnification of unsustainable imbalances in the 1980s and, finally, to the most spectacular privatisation of money in the 1990s and beyond. Modern Political Economics is essential reading for Economics students and anyone seeking a better understanding of the 2008 economic crash.
