The student with equipment who has the time and opportunity to attempt to contribute to his science should hesitate before burdening the press with another text. I paused, therefore, before adding another text on the subject of economies, but after much deliberation decided that there was a definite need for a specialized analysis of economic theory for the accountant. The economist and the accountant deal with substantially the same facts, even though they have different perspectives and somewhat different purposes. The economist is usually a dispassionate philosopher who looks on man's economic activities for the purpose of studying and explaining them. The accountant is working in the midst of business organization and is gathering and classifying facts for his employer. If he would do his work intelligently, he must have some understanding of the economic system in which his employer is functioning. There are many problems of interest to the economist that have only an indirect relation to the accountant's work. For this reason the ordinary text-books on economic theory include lengthy discussions on many phases of economics in which the accountant is not interested and give insufficient treatment to what he would consider more fundamental problems. It might be supposed that some of the more "practical" economic texts, such as are used in the business schools, might give the accountant what he needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Accounting: Its Principles and Some of Its Problems IN the following treatise an attempt is made to present the principles of accounting. In doing so the details of technic, important though they are, are purposely omitted or treated with the scantest mention. The essence of ao counting, from the author's view point, is the presentation, first, of a correct exhibit of the financial status of the con cern at a given moment of time, and, secondly, a showing of the results obtained during a given period of time. The first is embodied in the Balance Sheet; the second in the Income or Profit and Loss statement. In the ordinary routine of the accountant 's toil there is, indeed, another function; that of keeping account of claims and property, in order to secure the concern against the loss which might arise from forgetfulness, carelessness or dishonesty. This phase of accounting attains its acme in governmental accounting where the essential thing is to insure the proper handling of vast sums. But this seems a matter of much less scientific interest and is not treated in this work. The method of treatment, in general, has therefore been to consider how a given transaction is made manifest in the Balance Sheet, the goal which the accountant ever has in mind. The technical entries to be made in the journal or in other books of original entry are excluded. They are not of such importance for the forms in which such entries are made vary according to the needs of the office economy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses and summarizes the revived interest in reality issues (ontology) within accounting, economics, and the information sciences, with a view to informing scholars from these different disciplines about each other’s endeavours in ontological research. Even more importantly, the book aims at familiarizing scholars from various disciplines with an evolutionary approach for examining questions about reality in the social sciences. The book is based on a partly pluralistic approach that assures unity in diversity. Unity, because all existence arises from physical reality; diversity, because emergent properties create biological and social realities that cannot be reduced to physical phenomena. Hence, the book recognizes not only concrete but also abstract entities. It shows, however, that the actualization of these abstract entities requires objectification and concrete manifestation. This pluralistic approach is central to this book. It also is a challenge to those who reject abstract entities as socially real, as well as to those who defend a non-realist position. The major task of this book is to explore proposals towards a uniform ontological basis. This uniform and universal presentation extends beyond traditional ontology (asking ‘what is real?’) to such questions as ‘on which reality level is something real?’ and ‘in which (temporal and modal) way is it real?’. Such an extended analysis) is relevant to accountants, economists, information scientists, other social scientists as well as philosophers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Economics The rise and rapid spread of business education which has been such a prominent feature of our modern educational system has not only resulted in a call for courses dealing with particular fields of business activity, as accounting, banking and selling, but has considerably augmented the demand for a knowledge of the gen eral theory of business as treated in the science of economics. From long association with business men as well as from the teaching and discussion of economics with students drawn largely from the ranks of practical men of affairs, I have been impressed with the insistent demand for a simpler and more concrete state ment of economic theory than is usually found in the standard works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant There is a great deal to be said in favor of the inclusion of actuarial problems and we believe that the need for knowledge of this kind will increase as time goes on. Heretofore there have been many accountants who have had practically no need to exercise any knowledge which they have possessed of actuarial matters, but with the growth of accounting work and the broadening of its scope, there must be many problems which can be solved at a great saving of time and effort if the accountant be able to deal with them with the advantage of actuarial knowledge. This requirement seems to imply a general study of com pound interest and its application to those problems which are commonly solved by simple interest. It is axiomatic that every dollar in the business world is at work; it is earning other dollars either for its owner or for someone else. At the end of every fiscal period all these earnings, after deduction of expenses, should become capital, and the same or a larger income rate should be earned on this increased capital. Such studies are compound interest and present worth, with the various aspects of interest rates; annuities, immediate, due or deferred; their amount and present worth; sinking funds and various related prob lems in valuation of assets; amortization; bond valuation in its many aspects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s a remarkable series of books was produced by academic staff in the field of accounting at the University of Sydney. It was a period when academic research was largely analytical rather than empirically-based. For the most part, the interests of academics at Sydney were largely directed at questioning the status quo - either in the way accounting or auditing was practiced, or in the conventional wisdom expressed in textbooks of the time. The Sydney Accounting Classics series reflects the diversity of interests of the 'Sydney school' at that time. It also recognises the tremendous impact of the foundation professor of accounting, R.J. Chambers. This reprint series ensures that the ideas developed during this period remain available to new generations of scholars and researchers. The Sydney Accounting Classics series is an initiative of the Accounting Foundation, in association with Sydney University Press. Accounting Evaluation and Economic Behavior: This book has been referred to as Chambers' magnum opus, a meticulously researched and argued work describing a framework for accounting practice. This reprint edition opens the way for a new generation of researchers and scholars to read Chambers' work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting in a Golden Rule Economy By contrast with the approach of investment theory, investors and analysts typically evaluate a company's performance by calculating the ratio of net income to total assets or variations on this such as net in come plus interest expense to total assets or net income to equity. These ratios, known variously as return on investment, or accounting rates of return, are also used by corporate management to evaluate the performance of a division. Book excerpt: A timeless classic of economic theory that remains fascinating and pertinent today, this is Frank Knight's famous explanation of why perfect competition cannot eliminate profits, the important differences between "risk" and "uncertainty," and the vital role of the entrepreneur in profitmaking. Based on Knight's PhD dissertation, this 1921 work, balancing theory with fact to come to stunning insights, is a distinct pleasure to read. FRANK H. KNIGHT (1885-1972) is considered by some the greatest American scholar of economics of the 20th century. An economics professor at the University of Chicago from 1927 until 1955, he was one of the founders of the Chicago school of economics, which influenced Milton Friedman and George Stigler.
