Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed a "an outstanding contribution to our knowledge of the way in which western economies work" [Times Literary Supplement], this penetrating study of economic growth compares and analyzes tic rates of economic advance in the twelve leading countries that comprise the industrial West. Mr. Maddison examines why, after relative stagnation for several decades, the rate of economic development accelerated in continental Europe in the 1950’s, whether this represented a new economic pattern which could be maintained or was only a passing phase of recovery after World War II. He observes that the economies of North America and the United Kingdom seemed by comparison almost to stand still, and he explores the influence of economic policy on the differing growth rates, and the growth potentials and desirable lines of policy in the industrial West. He then discusses the major powers’ policy problems, whose outcome so closely affects the developing nations. Mr. Maddison presents basic statistical series, going back to 1870 in most cases, on gross national products, productivity, population, labor force, employment, working hours, investment and capital-output ratios. He draws upon this rich fund of comparative statistics with skill and insight, relating it throughout to the broad questions of economic policy which are at issue. This classic book was first published in 1964.
Book Synopsis Economics And Politics Of Industrial Policy by : Steven A. Shull
Download or read book Economics And Politics Of Industrial Policy written by Steven A. Shull and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial policy is a good example of the growing economic and political interdependency between Europe and the United States. The contributors to this volume, which compiles the proceedings of the seventh conference sponsored by the Institute for the Comparative Study of Public Policy, examine the ways in which national, and supranational in the case of the European Community, industrial policies are implemented. It is thought that diversity within the country is the primary reason why the United States does not have a comprehensive national policy. There is a consensus among the authors that the U.S. economy is less subject or amenable to central government planning than the economies of Europe. In Europe, there is more interest in coordinating industrial policy throughout the European Community, but here too the failure to adopt a comprehensive policy reveals the enormous diversity and parochialism that conflict with supranational goals. The contributors conclude that while a centrally planned and implemented industrial policy may be desirable, we do not have the means to achieve it. Acknowledging the major industrial and trade problems facing the United States and Western Europe, the authors feel that it is not clear whether these problems can be resolved by government intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Europe and the New International Economic Order examines the views and positions of Western European nations regarding the New International Economic Order (NIEO). The factors influencing such positions are analyzed, namely, economic factors on the one hand, and social, political, and cultural factors on the other. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a brief sketch of Western Europe, followed by a discussion on Western Europe's reaction to four NIEO issues: the adjustment policies necessary to establish the NIEO; the Law of the Sea; the integrated approach to commodities; and official development assistance (ODA) transfers. The following chapters focus on the implications of the NIEO for Western European economy, social services, income redistribution, and social movements; the policies of Scandinavia and the so-called ""like-minded"" countries toward developing countries and the NIEO; and institutional and political factors for and against the NIEO in Western Europe. The final chapter outlines the role of Western Europe in solving the problems of the NIEO. This book will be a useful resource for economists and economic policymakers.

Download or read book Trade and Poverty written by Jeffrey G. Williamson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the rise of globalization over the past two centuries helps explain the income gap between rich and poor countries today. Today's wide economic gap between the postindustrial countries of the West and the poorer countries of the third world is not new. Fifty years ago, the world economic order—two hundred years in the making—was already characterized by a vast difference in per capita income between rich and poor countries and by the fact that poor countries exported commodities (agricultural or mineral products) while rich countries exported manufactured products. In Trade and Poverty, leading economic historian Jeffrey G. Williamson traces the great divergence between the third world and the West to this nexus of trade, commodity specialization, and poverty. Analyzing the role of specialization, de-industrialization, and commodity price volatility with econometrics and case studies of India, Ottoman Turkey, and Mexico, Williamson demonstrates why the close correlation between trade and poverty emerged. Globalization and the great divergence were causally related, and thus the rise of globalization over the past two centuries helps account for the income gap between rich and poor countries today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to trace certain tendencies and developments in social policy in Western Europe and the United States. In the first, which is general, Professor Girod recalls the objectives of social policy as well as offering a number of scenarios or strategies for the future of social policy. The social policy philosophy of Schumpeter, Hayek and Röpke, and their current vitality, are traced by Professor de Luabier. Professor Delcourt, in his chapter on Social Policy - crisis or mutation?, presents a critical analysis of various trends in social policy and in particular the elitist philosophy of Hirschmann. The second part of the volume deals with particular national experiences: Switzerland by Professor Tschudi; Sweden by Dr. Hartmann; the United States by Professor Bénéton; and Italy by Professor Donati. The book broadly covers the diverse range of subject matter encompassed within the term 'social policy' and should be of great value both to social policy practitioners as well as to those academics concerned with the fields of economics, sociology and political science.
