Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987. A powerful combination of the authors’ research and practical experience underpin this book’s treatment of management and financial strategy in the world mining industry. In contrast with highly theoretical economic treatises on the extractive industries, this account deals with the practical realities of the economic, technical and business structure of the industry, the managerial and investment strategies, and the principle public policy issues. This book will interest all students and researchers in resource economics and it will be useful to officials of mining companies, government agencies, and financing agencies. Economic geologists and environmentalists should also find it relevant to their interests.
Book Synopsis Identifying the Linkages between Major Mining Commodity Prices and China’s Economic Growth—Implications for Latin America by : Mr.Yongzhen Yu
Download or read book Identifying the Linkages between Major Mining Commodity Prices and China’s Economic Growth—Implications for Latin America written by Mr.Yongzhen Yu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major mining commodity prices are inherently volatile and cyclical. High levels of investment in China have been a key driver in the strong world demand for minerals and metals over the past decade. The urbanization and industrialization of China has been an important factor behind the increase in domestic demand and high investment growth, while its export sector is also an important source of growth and plays a critical role as a catalyst. Activity in infrastructure, construction, real estate, and automobile manufacturing all contribute to the strong demand for minerals. Over the next five years, the Chinese demand is expected to remain strong, supported by investment and gradually rising consumption rates. However, in the second part of this decade economic growth in China could slow down. For Latin American countries, export receipts should remain strong over the next five years and beyond, given the continued strong demand from China.

Book Synopsis The Examination of Prospects by : Charles Godfrey Gunther
Download or read book The Examination of Prospects written by Charles Godfrey Gunther and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Examination of Prospects: A Mining Geology The purpose of this book is to present the practical side of economic geology concisely and in convenient form; established facts and the applications of accepted views are emphasized; theoretical discussions and questions of genesis are avoided. Coal, iron, and placer deposits are omitted; they arc subjects of specialized study that are fully and concisely treated in other works. The reader is assumed to possess a knowledge of mineralogy, petrography, and of elementary geology. The arrangement adopted Is based on Kemp's theory of magmatic waters, Lindgren's conclusions on hydrothermal and secondary alterations, and on the theories of secondary enrichment enunciated by Emmons and Weed. No general classification of ore-deposits is attempted, nor is any attempt made to fill by hypothesis the wide gaps, nor to explain the apparent contradictions, that rank economic geology among the most inexact of sciences. The present knowledge of the subject is too incomplete to warrant such broad generalizations. The present situation in mining in the United States may be summed up in the statement that the demand for good properties greatly exceeds the supply. While mines of the first rank will undoubtedly be discovered from time to time, it is probably true that a great proportion of deposits having outcrops of commercial grade or of evident promise have been recognized and explored. A review of mining conditions over long periods shows that the rich discoveries belong to pioneer days, and that as time goes on the more important developments are the result of lower working costs, improved metallurgical processes, and of an increasing knowledge of economic geology. Book excerpt: The World of Metals examines the nature of metal supply, demand, markets, and trade, and then uses this information to explain the behavior of metal markets (such as the long-run trends in metal prices and their short-run volatility). Here too the changing location of metal production and consumption is explored along with the underlying forces behind the observed changes. The book then focuses a variety of public policy issues associated with the production and use of metals. Among the topics explored are depletion and the long-run availability of metals, mining and sustainable development, the resource curse and the Dutch Disease, and economic rents and mining taxation.
Book Synopsis Innovation in the Mining Sector and Cycles in Commodity Prices by : Giulia Valacchi
Download or read book Innovation in the Mining Sector and Cycles in Commodity Prices written by Giulia Valacchi and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the evolution of innovation in the mining sector and how this innovation responds to the economic environment, in particular to changes in commodity prices. For this purpose, we combine commodity price data with innovation data as proxied by patent filings extracted from a novel unit record database containing comprehensive patent and firm level data for the mining sector from 1970 to 2015. We include patents registered both by mining companies and mining equipment, technology and service (METS) firms. With a multi-country panel analysis, we find that innovation in the mining sector is cyclical. Innovation increases in periods of high commodity prices while decreasing during commodity price recessions. Our results suggest that innovation increases mostly with long price cycle variations, while mostly unaffected by medium and short cycles. METS related innovation seem the driving force of this mechanism. In contrast, countries specializing in mining industries are found to be slower in reacting to price changes.

Book Synopsis Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space by : Ricky Lee
Download or read book Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space written by Ricky Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph addresses the legal and policy issues relating to the commercial exploitation of natural resources in outer space. It begins by establishing the economic necessity and technical feasibility of space mining today, an estimate of the financial commitments required, followed by a risk analysis of a commercial mining venture in space, identifying the economic and legal risks. This leads to the recognition that the legal risks must be minimised to enable such projects to be financed. This is followed by a discussion of the principles of international space law, particularly dealing with state responsibility and international liability, as well as some of the issues arising from space mining activities. Much detail is devoted to the analysis of the content of the common heritage of mankind doctrine. The monograph then attempts to balance such interests in creating a legal and policy compromise to create a new regulatory regime.
