Book excerpt: IntroductionIn my this book, I shall indicate actual cases to explain why I believe that any countries are experiencing stable economic growth period, they are possible performing economic growth, but they are not performing human development. Otherwise, they are possible leading quality of life or standing of living to human to be worse. Many economists believe economic growth can cause employment ratio increases to create many jobs to provide to people to work as well as it can encourage many businessmen to feel that it is right time to invest to do any kinds of different businesses. Hence, it seems that , on business development view point, it can lead any business development chances and social consumption desires will be raised. May people ought have more jobs to choose to work. However, on human development view point, whether economic growth can lead human development in success. If economic growth can influence human future development, whether economic growth can lead human future development to be better only, or it can also influence human development to live worse in possible. For example, although economic growth can lead technological development vehicle industry, when economic growth, it encourages many vehicle manufacturers accept to improve to invent many different kinds styles of vehicles, due to many vehicle manufacturers feel many people have jobs to do. So, they ought have more enough money to buy vehicle to drive. However, such as this vehicle consumption market case, it seems that economic growth can lead the vehicle consumption desire to be raised, but economic growth can not guarantee human has clean air to breathe. If global many families expect to buy at least one vehicle to drive. Hence, it will cause air pollution and traffic jam challenge to cause global air pollution level and earth warmth more serious because global many people choose to drive vehicles to replace walking. It is one threat issue to influence human can live in one clean air place in the future , such as our earth. So, it seems that economic growth does not mean that it can give benefits to human development. In summary, I shall give clear opinions to explain why the country is experiening economic growth, it must not mean that it lead human development as the same time. Finally, I hope my readers can make judgement whether my opinions are right or wrong.

Book excerpt: Human Development has been advocated as the prime development goal since 1990, when the publication of the first UNDP Human Development Report proposed that development should improve the lives people lead in multiple dimensions instead of primarily pursuing economic growth. This approach forms the foundation of Advancing Human Development: Theory and Practice. It traces the evolution of approaches to development, showing how the Human Development approach emerged as a consequence of defects in earlier strategies. Advancing Human Development argues that Human Development is superior to measures of societal happiness. It investigates the determinants of success and failure in Human Development across countries over the past forty years, taking a multidimensional approach to point to the importance of social institutions and social capabilities as essential aspects of change. It analyses political conditions underlying the performance of Human Development, and surveys global progress in multiple dimensions such as life expectancy, infant mortality, and education and outcomes, whilst reflecting on dimensions which have worsened over time, such as rising inequality and declining environmental conditions. These deteriorating conditions inform Advancing Human Development's account of the challenges to the Human Development approach, covering the insufficient attention paid to macroeconomic conditions and the economic structure needed for sustained success.

Book excerpt: This paper explores the links between economic growth and human development, identifying two chains, one from economic growth to human development, the other from human development to economic growth. The importance of various links in each chain are explored empirically with the help of cross-country statistics for the period 1970-92. Public expenditures on health and education, notably female, represent especially important links determining the strength of the relationship between economic growth and human capital development. The investment rate and income distribution are significant links determining the strength of the relationship running from development to economic growth. These two-way chains can generate self-reinforcing, virtuous or vicious cycles of development, as well as identifying lop-sided performers. Over time we find that lop-sided development seldom persists: countries initially in favor of economic growth lapse into the vicious category, while countries favoring human development advance into the virtuous category. This finding implies that, although both human development and economic growth should be jointly promoted, human development should be given sequential priority.

Using empirical as well as theoretical perspectives, the authors investigate several important issues in the context of human capital, namely population ageing, inequality, public policy, and long-term economic development. Ultimately, they demonstrate that the accumulation of human capital is of crucial importance to long-run economic growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Development in an Unequal World deals with the twenty-first-century challenges of unstable economic growth and sustainability and the re-emergence of deprivations and inequalities in multiple realms. It argues that the broader perspective of human development is most suited in reorienting development towards a more equitable, sustainable, and empowering world. The authors discuss the concept and philosophy of the capabilities and human development approach, its measurement, the links between economic growth and human development, and the role of social sector policy, gender equality, and securing sustainability. In doing so, they analyse frameworks, processes, institutions, and actors, and weave together concepts, methods, and evidence from numerous developing countries. The chapters offer an integrated understanding of the importance of capabilities, freedoms, and human flourishing in the process of development. This volume calls for an approach that focuses on the humanness of development and brings people back to the centre stage—a phenomenon that has receded to the background in the neoliberal era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human development plays a pivotal role in the process of economic development. A country's potential to grow is dependent, not only on physical resources, but also on human resources. Human capital formation is both qualitative and quantitative, in the sense that it involves attainment of the skills, education, and experience, as well as enhancing the number of individuals who possess these qualities. The modern concept of development is much more than the increase in income and output. Rather, it is a multi-dimensional process which involves the reorganization and reorientation of the whole economic and social system. It not only involves radical changes in institutional, social, and administrative structures, but also in popular attitudes, customs, and beliefs. Economic development in modern times is understood, inter alia, in terms of reduction of poverty, inequality, and unemployment in a growing economy. Human capital formation, thus, is central to any development strategy. This book contains a comprehensive study on the inter-relationship between human development and economic growth, covering most of the countries of the world, categorized as: developing countries, high income countries, upper middle income countries, lower middle income countries, low income countries, and all countries taken together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an authoritative, inter-disciplinary, and up-to-date survey of relevant concepts, research areas, and applications of intellectual capital. Until now, the literature had lacked a comprehensive analysis of intellectual capital (IC) in regard to sustainability, block chain, and other related technologies and virtual environments. This book shows the importance of intellectual capital for contemporary organizations: how it contributes to theories of the firm, how it affects organizational performance, how is it linked with the organizational ambidexterity, how it connects to the technological developments like block chain and digital technologies, and what would be its association with sustainability. Central to our thesis is the systemic nature of intellectual capital in organizations: how intellectual capital interacts with and complements other organizational resources and developments. This book also shows as to how applying the notion of intellectual capital to organizations requires us to consider how intangible forms of capital differ from more traditional forms, implying the need for a theory of firm that accommodates a concept of dynamic, heterogeneous intellectual capital. Although a lot has been written on IC, this book proves to be the first with scholastic and action-oriented perspective on as to how a firm can manage its IC to create value. This book also demonstrates as to how the subjective aspects of IC can be measured and what can be their strategic implications. A discussion on IC disclosure also appears in the latter part of the book. In doing so, this book reveals as to how the value creation of today’s businesses is driven by the IC. This book also introduces the readers to the new application of IC and its association with the contemporary disruptive technologies. This is a book for IC researchers and academicians who want to understand the diverse aspects of IC, for business managers who want to be at the cutting edge, for those early in their careers who seek a challenging new path, and for the top-level managers of the world who have their eye on the future.

But it must not lead positive human development. Otherwise, when one country is experiencing stable economic growth in long term. It is possible to lead negative human development. I shall indicate as below: To explain whether economy growth can influence human development. We need to research whether economy growth has relationship to influence human development. What is economic growth meaning? Economists explain it means an increase in gross national product (GNP) if all products and services that an economy produces during a specified time period. So, it brings one interesting question concerns economic growth: IS it a quantity based concept, not quality based concept? If economic growth is an only relationship to economic development Otherwise, if it also has quality based concepts, then it has relationship to influence or lead human development. When economy growth is a direct measure of changes in the size of the economy. Whether it is a measure of welfare to human development or sustainable development. Why do we need to concern economic growth? Because political importance means domestic and international trading income and the country's people earning income measurement as well as humanitarian importance means an indicator of welfare, an indicator of human development and an indicator of sustainable development measurement. However, if seems GNP or GDP measures that value of products and services produces within an economy ( economic income) in a given year, but it can also measure of welfare development, sustainable anything. Otherwise, human development includes welfare, which measures quality of life and human development, which means quality based concept as well as sustainable income, which means how much we can spend without running down capital stocks, we can maintain same level of spending in perpetuity. Hence, human development concerns our quality of life or standard of living. So, human welfare separation of means from a direct measure of well-being as well as economic welfare separation of means GNP or GDP corrected for expenditures on various necessities. So, it brings this question: Can GDP ( economic growth measurement) be an indicator of human development or human welfare? I shall indicate cases to attempt to explain as below: For GDP per capita and happiness case example, I assume that the country, US increases rapidly up to capita US $4,000 per capita in this year and small returns after that. What does this mean? What influences US people feel happy or happiness feeling causes? For another changing in GDP correlate to changes in environment quality case. Environmental KC ( Kuznets Curve) showed the graphical representation of Kuznets theory from the 1940 year that economic inequality increases over time, then at a critical point begins to decrease. Environmental KC (EKC) shows a hypothesized relationship between various indicators of environmental degradation and income per capita. The EKC ( environment Kuznets Curve), shows that in the early stages of economic growth degradation and pollution increase, when beyond some level of income per capita, which varies for different indicators. The trend reverses, so that at high-income levels economic growth leads to environment improvement.

Book excerpt: Economic growth, in recent development paradigm, has been identified as necessary, but not sufficient condition for the expansion of human capabilities. Academic literature hypothesizes that there exists a two-way relationship between economic prosperity and human development. It is quite possible for the absence of income growth to steadily erode standards of human development; and without human development, growth is not sustainable, offers only temporary gains. Using disaggregated sub-national data over a reasonably long period, this study examines the relationship between economic performance and human development in Indian sub-national context. Key findings reveal that both chains of transformation are operational. However, as the chain of transformation from human development to economic prosperity is comparatively strong than that of the other this study recommends a policy which emphasizes the promotion of both aspects of development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Development is but one facet of Human Development. This forces us to ask - how do humans develop? Man is a social animal and the growth of our humanity requires various social institutions, such as bureaucracy. The paradox of capitalism is that it is a system ostensibly based on self-interest yet wholly dependent on non-market values for its success. These non-market values are shaped by two much-neglected factors, religion and ethnicity. Economic Development is an applied field; whatever it claims as a conclusion should be an applicable conclusion. This requires attention to all those non-economic factors which translate economic decisions into practice - such as the forces of nationalism versus the pressures of such global powers as US foreign policy and the advice of the IMF/IBRD. Since policy is our goal, theory whose intellectual basis is inaccessible to policy makers or which fails to have application should be minimized. Mathematical models are best avoided and, if they are to be used, the burden of proof must be placed upon their proponents. As insights about the market are limited neither by time nor space, poor countries can learn from rich ones, and vice versa. It is most fruitful to focus on examples of success, such as the East Asian economies. They are the clearest illustration of the fact that rapid economic development is possible even to those who have suffered through imperialism, and possess few natural resources, but have their work and their determination intact. `One good example is enough.'
