Book excerpt: Financial crises aggravated by high-leveraged financial institutions and/or heavily indebted private agents occur rarely but their economic impacts are severe: firms go bankrupt, credit crunch emerges, unemployment rises dramatically and sovereign debts sour. Like severe natural disasters their forecast is difficult if not impossible. Nonetheless, the literature on financial crises, in particular on the global financial crisis 2007-2009, is already voluminous. The overall picture this literature is painting regarding the emergence and propagation of the latest crisis is rather well researched and main insights are broadly accepted. However, there are some specific aspects of crisis causation, crisis management and the economic impacts of severe financial crises which are not well addressed so far. This book discusses the topics of contagion in emerging stock markets during the Asian and Latin American crisis and the relationship between the executive compensation structure and the banks' riskiness of asset portfolios.

Book excerpt: This paper reviews the literature on financial crises focusing on three specific aspects. First, what are the main factors explaining financial crises? Since many theories on the sources of financial crises highlight the importance of sharp fluctuations in asset and credit markets, the paper briefly reviews theoretical and empirical studies on developments in these markets around financial crises. Second, what are the major types of financial crises? The paper focuses on the main theoretical and empirical explanations of four types of financial crises—currency crises, sudden stops, debt crises, and banking crises—and presents a survey of the literature that attempts to identify these episodes. Third, what are the real and financial sector implications of crises? The paper briefly reviews the short- and medium-run implications of crises for the real economy and financial sector. It concludes with a summary of the main lessons from the literature and future research directions.

Book excerpt: Warnings of the threat of an impending financial crisis are not new, but do we really know what constitutes an actual episode of crisis and how, once begun, it can be prevented from escalating into a full-blown economic collapse? Using both historical and contemporary episodes of breakdowns in financial trade, contributors to this volume draw insights from theory and empirical data, from the experience of closed and open economies worldwide, and from detailed case studies. They explore the susceptibility of American corporations to economic downturns; the origins of banking panics; and the behavior of financial markets during periods of crisis. Sever papers specifically address the current thrift crisis—including a detailed analysis of the over 500 FSLIC-insured thrifts in the southeast—and seriously challenge the value of recent measures aimed at preventing future collapse in that industry. Government economists and policy makers, scholars of industry and banking, and many in the business community will find these timely papers an invaluable reference.

Book excerpt: The impact of the Global Financial Crisis was felt in 2008 and its repercussions are still with us today. In this book, the authors set the context for examining the crisis by looking at a regional crisis that occurred a decade earlier but whose lessons about financial fragility were soon forgotten. The authors then move to the present and discuss the views of a number of economics who to various degrees predicted or forewarned of the impending crisis. In the second chapter, the elements that caused the latest and current problems in the U.S. and consequently to all economies of the world, due to the systemic risk of globalisation, are determined. The third chapter advocates the intangible and tacit knowledge in the knowledge based society of the 21st century, exacerbates the problem of moral agency in today's organisations, making the boundaries and accountability of decision-making especially vague and ambiguous. The authors apply this concept as a means to enhance the moral agency to organisations in the context of the knowledge based society, and as a key part of responsible leadership after the global financial crisis of 2008. The fourth chapter reviews aspects of the new rules that apply to investment firms and to banks, making comment on individual provisions as necessary. In the last chapter, the serious effects of a bubble and its burst in small countries in Central and Eastern Europe are looked at and discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: This book is about one of the most controversial dilemmas of contract law: whether or not the unexpected change of circumstances due to the effects of financial crises may under certain conditions be taken into account. Growing interconnectedness of global economies facilitates the spread of the effects of the financial crises. Financial crises cause severe difficulties for persons to fulfill their contractual obligations. During the financial crises, performance of contractual obligations may become excessively onerous or may cause an excessive loss for one of the contracting parties and consequently destroy the contractual equilibrium and legitimate the governmental interventions. Uncomfortable economic climate leads to one of the most controversial dilemmas of the contract law: whether the binding force of the contract is absolute or not. In other words, unstable economic circumstances impose the need to devote special attention to review and perhaps to narrow the binding nature of a contract. Principle of good faith and fair dealing motivate a variety of theoretical bases in order to overcome the legal consequences of financial crises. In this book, all these theoretical bases are analyzed with special focus on the available remedies, namely renegotiation, rescission or revision and the circumstances which enables the revocation of these remedies. The book collects the 19 national reports and the general report originally presented in the session regarding the Effects of Financial Crises on the Binding Force of Contracts: Renegotiation, Rescission or Revision during the XIXth congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law, held in Vienna, July 2014.

Book excerpt: Out of the debate over the effectiveness of the policy responses to the 2008 global financial crisis as well as over the innovativeness of global governance comes this collection by leading academics and practitioners who explore the dynamics of economic crisis and impact. Edited by Paolo Savona, John J. Kirton, and Chiara Oldani Global Financial Crisis: Global Impact and Solutions examines the nature of the recent crisis, its consequences in major regions and countries, the innovations in the ideas, instruments and institutions that constitute national and regional policy responses, building on the G8's response at its L'Aquila Summit. Experts from Africa, North America, Asia and Europe examine the implications of those responses for international cooperation, coordination and institutional change in global economic governance, and identify ways to reform and even replace the architecture created in the mid 20th century in order to meet the global challenges of the 21st.

Book excerpt: This book on financial crises is written at a time when the whole world is facing another crisis, a different one this time; one that is related to our health, as well as the economy in a painful manner. The first chapter of this book focuses on the economic effects of this crisis with particular emphasis on the financial sector. The remainder of the book presents a selection of readings related to the GFC. These touch upon issues such as corporate governance; the effect of the collapse of the Lehman Brothers on the net-worth of financial and non-financial firms; securitization and why the alchemy “did not work”; and finally, a case-study on Turkey and in particular the Turkish short-term interest rates and exchange rates and their relationship to political developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of the global economic crisis which started in the United States in 2007-08 are still being felt in most of the advanced economies, and the mainstream tools of recovery are not having the required results. It seems that many of the after-effects of the crisis, including the instability of the financial markets, increasing public debts and limited economic growth, require new solutions from both economic policy and theory. Lower aggregate demand during the crisis increased the pressure on firms to be more competitive and at the same time, the crisis in the banking system has had a negative impact on the willingness of financial institutions to give credit to companies for investment. Therefore, the key issue for current economic policy is to find a balance between the stabilisation of public finance and maintaining the momentum of long-term growth. This book offers an evolutionary-developmental analysis, combining elements of neo-Schumpeterian economics, institutional economics and post-Keynesian economics, to show that selection processes within an economy, and the institutional rules shaping those processes, are substantially more important than usually recognised by evolutionary economic theory. Two major challenges for economic theory and policy, in particular, have emerged during the crisis. The first is the rise of unemployment coupled with growing public deficits. The second is the financial instability which threatens the permanence of economic development. This book examines the performance of the advanced economies since the crisis and explores why some of them have been more successful in tackling these challenges than others. It is argued that the reasons for the varied performances of these economies lie in the economic policies which were introduced before and in the aftermath of the crisis and the differences in the regulation of their labour markets. This volume will be of interest to students and academics in the areas of macroeconomics, public economics and public management.

Expert contributors argue that the complexity of the Global Financial Crisis challenges researchers to offer more comprehensive explanations by extending the scope and range of their traditional investigations. To achieve this, the volume views the financial crisis simultaneously through three different lenses--economic, psychological, and social values ... They recognize how current economic analysis did not prepare academic economists, business economists, traders, and regulators to anticipate economic and financial crises ...

Book excerpt: The 2008 financial crisis poses three fundamental questions for economists and policy makers; understanding the origins of the crisis, understanding the consequences of this crisis for the world economy, and finally understanding why the 2008 financial crisis is not as serious as the 1929 crisis. The prevailing view is that the 2008 financial crisis was solely the result of inadequate financial regulation together with a very loose monetary policy conducted by central banks, especially the Fed. It is believed that this crisis is a temporary detour in the normal course of the events, so that in the near future capitalist economies will resume the high growth path observed before the crisis. In terms of the third question, there is a widespread view that the fundamental reason that explains the avoidance of the harmful experiences of 1929 was the fiscal and monetary policy expansions in developed countries. No important role is assigned to developing countries in terms of the effects of the financial crisis. This book challenges the prevailing orthodoxy surrounding the origins and the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis. The book demonstrates that measures in addition to a profound change in the financial regulation are required if a new financial crisis is to be avoided in the future, measures include: a change in the conduct of economic policy; a reform of the national and international monetary systems; and a radical change in the pattern of income distribution. This book is essential reading for all interested in macroeconomics, monetary policy, development economics and the global impact of the financial crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2007 financial and economic crisis that began in the United States and quickly spread around the world differed from earlier crises in a number of significant ways. This book examines the causes of these events in the US, and their impacts on North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. As with previous crises, real estate booms and busts and excessive financial leverage played key roles; however, the most recent crisis had many unique aspects to it, all of which are explored here in depth. This includes the role played by large international banks, shadow banks, increased global liquidity, population growth and other factors. Collectively, these factors contributed to interconnected economies and financial markets to an extent that never existed before. The net result was the unprecedented ripple effect of the crisis from the US and into the rest of the world. The impact in the US was significantly different than the impact in Canada, Japan, Spain and other countries. Significantly, the global effects of the crisis varied widely from country to country, as did government responses to the crisis. The contributors to this book international academics, bank regulators, and practitioners critique the crises and important international regulatory issues from the point of view of various countries. Academics, regulators, legislators and financial practitioners will do well to add this book to their shelves.
