Book excerpt: Privilege has long been understood as the constitutional basis of Ancien Régime France, legalising the provision of a variety of rights, powers and exemptions to some, whilst denying them to others. In this fascinating new study however, Jeff Horn reveals that Bourbon officials utilized privilege as an instrument of economic development, freeing some sectors of the economy from pre-existing privileges and regulations, while protecting others. He explores both government policies and the innovations of entrepreneurs, workers, inventors and customers to uncover the lived experience of economic d.

Book excerpt: This volume makes available the first English version of L' conomie mondiale et les frappes mon taires en France, 1493-1680, Frank C. Spooner's original and distinguished contribution to economic and monetary history. Generously illustrated with maps and graphs, and abridged by the author, this study introduces the English-reading audience to the methodological approaches of the modern school of French economic history. In this edition, Spooner covers an additional forty-five years not included in his original work: the period 1680-1725 which marks the prelude to the great monetary reform and consolidation of France in 1726. In addition to bringing the reader up to date on his continuing research, he presents a number of important conclusions concerning this economic era. Drawing from his vast insight into French monetary history and his thorough technical knowledge of French coinage and minds of the period, the author maps the historical and spatial perspectives of the two and a half centuries when France experienced successive periods of inflation as bullion, copper, and credit emerged into the forefront of economic affairs. To illustrate the way in which the sequence of these periods affected the structure of the French economy, he discusses how the relative supply and demand of the metals used in varying degrees as a medium of exchange increased the demand for the metal and influenced the credit system. Credit thus made a special contribution in coordinating and adjusting the various inconsistencies in the production and circulation of the different metals. Throughout his study, Spooner attributes an important role to money as a significant factor in economic change and development in early modern Europe and focuses on the relationship between the supply of money and the level and pattern of economic activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Development of France: And Germany 1815-1914 For some years now I have lectured at Cambridge over the ground covered by this book. In 1907 I published, in Vol. x of the Cambridge Modern History, a chapter part of which corresponds - in matter and I daresay sometimes in words - with the earlier chapters which follow. I was urged by friends to put all my material into book form, for the use of the growing body of those at Cambridge and elsewhere who now study European economic history and are handicapped by the lack of books in English, and of comprehensive books in any language. I have written with an eye to them; but I hope what I have written may interest others. At first I planned a history of West European economic development in the nineteenth century; but I abandoned this notion, after discussion, for fear that such a book would be either outrageously long or overcrowded with dry and unexplained detail. Even as it is, in this attempt to put French and German economic history into a West European framework, the references to several topics will, I am sure, seem deficient in analytical explanation to many readers. Footnotes have been reduced to a minimum; so some account of the sources on which I have drawn most may be given here. For the earlier period there is a bibliography to my chapter in the Modern History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The classes and their interests are analyzed first, in an examination of the Breton economy, and then the social system and the political superstructure that preserved it. Finally, Professor Collins addresses the question of order itself. How did the elites preserve order? What order did they wish to preserve? His analysis suggests that early modern France was a much more unstable, mobile society than previously thought; that absolutism existed more in theory than in practice; and that local elites and the Crown compromised in mutually beneficial ways to maintain their combined control over society. They imposed a new order, one neither feudal nor absolutist, on a society reexamining the meaning of basic structures such as the relationship of the family and the individual, the role of women in society, and property.
