Book excerpt: Various ecological and biological aspects of the wood duck (Aix sponsa)were investigated in the elm-ash-maple (Ulmus-Fraxinus- Acer) bottomland timber impoundments at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in central New York. Major areas of research included (a) a description of the forest stand with special reference to the ecological impact of seasonal impoundment, (b) the pattern of occurrence and use of natural nest cavities by wood ducks, (c) the nesting response of wood ducks to nest boxes, (d) an investigation of dump nesting, (e) mark-recapture estimates of annual duckling production, (f) a study of vernal pool invertebrates, and (g) a study of brood usage and survival. Spring flooded green timber was found to produce ideal breeding habitat for wood ducks in providing ample acceptable nest cavities (1.60 per acre)and an abundance of early spring (vernal pool) invertebrate food resources, including fairy shrimp (Chirocephalopsis bundyi), cladocerans (Daphnia pulex), mosquito lar.

Book excerpt: In most avian species, social dynamics among females are far less studied than those among males. Female social behavior has important implications for population demography, and therefore for informing management and conservation decisions. The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) is a model species for studies of female sociality, because it displays female philopatry and is a cavity-nesting species with potentially high female-female competition. The present study intended to address three specific hypotheses: first that Wood Ducks exhibit consistent, repeatable interactions between individuals, second that that network position is associated with female morphology, and third that social position influences access to resources. We collected detailed social data over a focused period of time to establish the presence or absence of a distinct social structure among 14 captive Wood Duck hens, and we examined how social interactions are influenced by morphology and resource usage. Results displayed a highly structured and linear dominance hierarchy, and distinct aggressive and associative relationships between dyads. Eye patch area, mass, and age, were correlated with aggression initiated and received, and with dominance rank. Aggression and dominance were associated with levels of feeder access. This study provides a first look at Wood Duck social structure while precisely controlling the environmental context. The fitness consequences of these social interactions may be significant for females, and this type of social structure may apply to other cavity nesting avian species.
