Book excerpt: Western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a pest of maize, Zea mays (L.), that has recently established in Ontario, Canada following a range expansion from the western United States. In addition to yield loss, ear feeding by S. albicosta was expected to exacerbate infection of mycotoxigenic fungi in maize grain, especially in southern Ontario where environmental conditions frequently favour infection of maize by Fusarium spp. The objective of this research was to determine effective management strategies for S. albicosta in Ontario. Specifically, the efficacy of Cry1F Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic maize was evaluated for control of S. albicosta injury in field experiments from 2011-2015, and the susceptibility of Ontario field-collected S. albicosta to Cry1F was investigated using laboratory concentration-response bioassays. Non-Bt and Bt (Cry1F and Vip3A × Cry1Ab) maize hybrids in combination with insecticides and fungicides were evaluated for control of S. albicosta injury and accumulation of mycotoxins, particularly, deoxynivalenol (DON), under natural field infestation conditions from 2011-2014. The most effective application timing of pesticides was also investigated. Lastly, the relationship between S. albicosta injury and DON accumulation in maize was investigated based on field experiments in 2012-2014. A simple calculation for estimating the risk of F. graminearum infection during the silking and insect feeding periods was used to develop parameters to describe the relationship between S. albicosta injury and DON accumulation using multiple regression analysis. The results of this research provide evidence for field-evolved resistance to Cry1F within Ontario populations of S. albicosta and confirm the lack of efficacy of Cry1F-expressing hybrids for control of S. albicosta. Excellent control of S. albicosta injury was achieved with the Vip3A event and control of non-Bt and Cry1F maize was improved with insecticide application; however, low levels of DON were observed regardless of Bt event. A combined application of insecticide and fungicide at the full silking stage is recommended for maize hybrids lacking tolerance to F. graminearum infection. Lastly, these results confirm that injury by S. albicosta can increase the risk of DON accumulation in maize grain in Ontario; however, hybrid tolerance to F. graminearum and environmental conditions are predominant factors in DON accumulation.

In 1999, its range expanded into much of North America causing damage from Nebraska to Canada and Mexico. WBC periodically causes kernel damage as severe as 15 bu/ac for one larva/plant. Control for WBC relies on Bt corn hybrids with Vip3A and Cry1F traits and insecticides. There has been a 5.2-fold decrease in efficacy of Cry1F for WBC. Concerns over management tactics may be creating space for conservation biological control to become part of a WBC integrated pest management (IPM) program. Objective 1, used an online survey to determine Nebraska stakeholder concerns, understanding, and practices for WBC IPM. Respondents self-reported significantly higher yield loss due to WBC in 2016 than in 2015 and 2014. Growers demonstrated low knowledge of WBC identification and management. There were frequent reports (58.45%) of Cry1F Bt corn providing decreased control against WBC. In objective 2, predator surveys for natural enemies of WBC indicated that four generalist predators were ubiquitous in Nebraska corn fields. Some species had population dynamics that were associated with the WBC population dynamics in corn. Lab-based feeding trials indicated that Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) was a superior predator for WBC eggs and larvae. However, molecular gut content analysis of surveyed predators found in-field predation by multiple generalist predators but not C. maculata. By determining the needs of growers and the role of predators for WBC, conservation biological control may be incorporated into a WBC IPM program.

Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the GMLS II conference on «Implications of GM-Crop Cultivation at Large Spatial Scales», held in Bremen in March 2010. The meeting was a platform to discuss ecological, agricultural and economic implications of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and to present new developments in risk assessment and monitoring. Approaches in co-existence regulations and nature protection standards are presented as well as legal challenges and resolutions on national and on EU-level. The book collects 30 contributions written by specialists in science, administration and jurisprudence from Europe as well as Africa, Central America, and Russia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews current developments in integrated pest management (IPM), focussing on insect pests. It discusses advances in understanding species and landscape ecology on which IPM is founded, as well as advances in cultural, physical and biological methods of control. The first part of the book reviews current developments in understanding insect species, community and agroecosystems ecology. This understanding provides the foundation for developing effective IPM programmes which work with ecosystems to keep pests from reaching damaging levels. Parts 2 and 3 then review advances in cultural, physical and, in particular, biological methods of control. Chapters cover developments in classical, conservation and augmentative biological control as well as the use of entomopathogenic fungi, viruses, nematodes and semiochemicals. The final parts of the book summarise current research on monitoring pesticide use as well as emerging classes of biopesticides. Edited by pioneers in IPM techniques, and including contributions from some of most eminent experts in the field, this will be a standard reference for the IPM research community, crop scientists, entomologists, companies involved in pesticides and crop pest management as well as government agencies monitoring and regulating pest management in agriculture.

Book excerpt: Insect pests remain one of the main constraints to food and fiber production worldwide despite farmers deploying a range of techniques to protect their crops. Modern pest control is guided by the principles of integrated pest management (IPM) with pest resistant germplasm being an important part of the foundation. Since 1996, when the first genetically modified (GM) insect-resistant maize variety was commercialized in the USA, the area planted to insect-resistant GM varieties has grown dramatically, representing the fastest adoption rate of any agricultural technology in human history. The goal of our book is to provide an overview on the role insect-resistant GM plants play in different crop systems worldwide. We hope that the book will contribute to a more rational debate about the role GM crops can play in IPM for food and fiber production.
