Book Synopsis Managing the Future of Southeast Asia's Valuable Tropical Rainforests by : Ratnam Wickneswari
Download or read book Managing the Future of Southeast Asia's Valuable Tropical Rainforests written by Ratnam Wickneswari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides current knowledge about tropical rain forest genetics and its implications for the profitable and sustainable management of forest resources in Southeast Asia. Each chapter covers a major topic in the evolutionary biology of tropical rain forest trees and how management systems interact with these natural dynamics. Authors provide an up-to-date and insightful review of important scientific findings and conclude with practical recommendations for the modern forester in Southeast Asia. Several chapters provide compelling discussions about commonly neglected aspects of tropical forestry, including the impact of historical dynamics of climate change, anthropogenic threats to genetic viability, and the important role of wildlife in maintaining genetic diversity. These discussions will promote a deeper appreciation of not only the economic value of forests, but also their mystery and intangible values. The silvicultural industry in Southeast Asia is a major contributor to the regional economy but the connection between scientific research and the application and development of policy could be improved upon. This book will help bridge that gap. This book will prove beneficial reading for forestry students, professional forest managers, and policy makers, who do not have technical training in genetics. It is also intended for non-specialists who are involved in the tropical timber industry, from the local forest manager to the international timber purchasing agent.
Book Synopsis Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia by : Gerhard Gerold
Download or read book Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia written by Gerhard Gerold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia constitutes one of the world's most extended rainforest regions. It is characterized by a high degree of biodiversity and contains a large variety of endemic species. Moreover, these forests provide a number of important and sin gular ecosystem services, like erosion protection and provision of high quality wa ter, which cannot be replaced by alternative ecosystems. However, various forms of encroachment, mostly those made by human interventions, seriously threaten the continuance of rainforests in this area. There is ample evidence that the rainforest resources, apart from large scale commercial logging, are exposed to danger particularly from its margin areas. These areas, which are characterized by intensive man-nature interaction, have been identified as extremely fragile systems. The dynamic equilibrium that bal ances human needs and interventions on the one hand, and natural regeneration capacity on the other, is at stake. The decrease of rainforest resources is, to a sub stantial degree, connected with the destabilization of these systems. Accordingly, the search for measures and processes, which prevent destabilization and promote stability is regarded as imperative. This refers to both the human and the natural part of the forest margin ecosystem.

Book Synopsis Ecology, Conservation, and Management of Southeast Asian Rainforests by : Richard B. Primack
Download or read book Ecology, Conservation, and Management of Southeast Asian Rainforests written by Richard B. Primack and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes essays by many of the world's leading authorities on tropical forests, among them policy officials and scientists from the countries in the region. It begins with an overview of the timber industry in Southeast Asia and a comparison of tropical rainforests there with those in other parts of the world. Experts then describe the plant and animal communities of the region and discuss the efforts that have been made to preserve them. The last section of the book addresses issues of policy and management. Contributors examine the conflicting needs of forestry officials: on one hand, to conserve sufficient forest to maintain healthy populations of plant and animal species and, on the other, to use forest resources to support the needs of the local people. The authors emphasize the need for immediate solutions to these problems, noting that Southeast Asian forests are crucial not only for the economic and social development of specific countries but also because of their role in global climatic change.
Book Synopsis The Management of Tropical Moist Forest Lands by : Duncan Poore
Download or read book The Management of Tropical Moist Forest Lands written by Duncan Poore and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1991 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive guide to fundamental ecological principles in tropical moist forest lands. This edition has been revised to encompass our increased knowledge and understandings of the complexities of forest management. It addresses the cross-cutting issues: the effects of government policies, land allocation and infrastructure development in forest lands. An analysis is made regarding various forest uses: forests for wood, forests for agriculture and forests for nature conservation and environmental protection.

This volume, a joint publication with Kyoto University Press, examines the highly politicized context in which local forestry problems intersect with global market forces, focusing on the social and economic diversity of different tropical forests and their specific historical background. It emphasizes the importance of examining local issues in their own right.

This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book covers major importance of tropical forest diversity and its values to vegetation, wildlife, and the local community. It addresses the current issues and opportunities in the Southeast Asia’s tropical forests. This book lays the groundwork for a better understanding of tropical forest ecosystem services. Ecosystem services has four concepts: provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services. In an era of rapid population growth and increasing pressure on tropical natural resources, ecosystem services have become central to the discussion of climate change mitigation. The values of tropical forest ecosystem services deserve to be the highlighted when it comes to shaping responsible behaviors towards sustainable development goals (SDGs). This book is of interest and useful to researchers and academics teaching in the field of tropical forest conservation, tropical ecosystems, tropical products technology, ecotourism, forest plantation management, bio industrial economy, agroforestry business and marketing. Professionals, foresters, industrial entrepreneurs, ecologists, and a valuable source of reference to the relevant researchers and students in the region.
