Jay sur les débuts de l'Ecole de Francfort jusqu'en 1950, il nous manquait une vue globale de l'histoire de ce groupe original de théoriciens issus du marxisme ; c'est chose faite avec cet ouvrage qui se clôt en 1969 sur la mort d'Adorno. R. Wiggershaus s'est proposé d'y reconstituer le contexte historique des œuvres de l'Ecole, en suivant minutieusement les carrières des différents protagonistes et l'élaboration, sans cesse interrompue et sans cesse reprise, d'un ambitieux projet théorique collectif dont il dégage les implications politiques pour chaque période, depuis sa création au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale. La confrontation soigneuse des publications célèbres aux documents d'archives et à d'autres sources peu connues nous fait redécouvrir l'interaction entre la réflexion théorique et les contingences historiques. La genèse des notions essentielles et leur évolution souvent complexe reçoivent de ce fait un éclairage neuf, désormais indispensable pour aborder les textes de l'Ecole et juger de la contribution de la " Théorie critique " à la pensée contemporaine. Ce bilan quasi exhaustif permet en effet au lecteur d'appréhender à la fois la continuité de l'histoire de l'Ecole et les rejaillissements de cette histoire sur l'élaboration progressive de théories qui touchent à de nombreux " champs ". Le grand mérite de R. Wiggershaus est de faire bien apparaître cette pluralité d'inspirations et d'évolutions personnelles au sein de ce petit groupe, tout en montrant l'enracinement des théories présentes des héritiers dans la tradition vivante de l'Ecole Q. Habermas). C'est un courant majeur de la " philosophie d'aujourd'hui " que nous découvrons ici in statu nascendi.
