Book excerpt: Eclipse of Grace offers original insights into the roots of modern theology by introducing systematic theologians and Christian ethicists to Hegel through a focus on three of his seminal texts: Phenomenology of Spirit, Science of Logic, and Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. Presents brilliant and original insights into Hegel’s significance for modern theology Argues that, theologically, Hegel has been misconstrued and that much more can be gained by focusing on the logic that he develops out of an engagement with Christian doctrines Features an original structure organized as a set of commentaries on individual Hegel texts, and not just presenting overviews of his entire corpus Offers detailed engagement with Hegel’s texts rather than relying on generalizations about Hegelian philosophy Provides an illuminating, accessible and lucid account of the thinking of the major figures in modern German philosophy and theology

Book excerpt: "We live in a World no longer under heaven. At least in most people's minds and imaginations that vision of reality has become little more than a caricature, conjuring up the saints and angels of baroque frescoes. And in the church only a hint remains of the power it once exercised in the hearts of believers". So begins A. J. Conyers in this provocative book, and suggests that the eclipse of heaven has resulted in a shallower view of life and death, in a loss of cultural and individual purpose, and in moral disarray. This is a powerful, persuasive plea to stop blocking heaven from our sight, and so to regain hope, meaning, and richer lives -- in this world and the one to come.

Book excerpt: Join investigative journalist and bestselling author Lee Strobel as he embarks on his life-changing quest to solve the riddle of grace. Along the way, you'll find the undeniable evidence of grace in the true stories of racists, addicts, and even murderers who have found new hope and purpose--all through the redemptive power of God's amazing grace. In The Case for Grace, Lee offers an accessible explanation of the theology of God's grace, shown through the incredible, dramatic, can't-put-it-down stories of people whose lives were changed by the gift of grace--true accounts of people whose transformation and renewal are so radical that they seem to be best explained as the work of a gracious God. Lee draws upon his own journey from atheism to Christianity to explore the depth and breadth of God's redeeming love for spiritually wayward people, traveling thousands of miles to capture the inspiring stories of everyday people whose values have been radically changed and who have discovered the "how" and "why" behind God's amazing grace. Each story that Strobel shares in The Case for Grace contributes a piece to the puzzle of grace, showing us: How grace goes beyond forgiveness to acceptance and even adoption by God How it restores hope when none is left; how it extends to the most heinous circumstances How it allows us to forgive those who caused our most intimate wounds--and even to forgive ourselves Through it all, you will be encouraged as you see how God's grace can revolutionize your life--starting today.

Book excerpt: Many Christians today have experienced a loss of enormous significance -- they no longer understand their daily lives to be lived "before God." This timely work traces the development and implications of this loss and argues for its recovery. In comparing contemporary Christians with believers of previous eras, author George Stroup sees an "eclipse" of life lived before God. This eclipse is tragic because the Bible presupposes human life as a daily, personal relationship with God. Stroup here offers help by exploring anew the biblical view that Jesus Christ models most clearly what life lived before God and neighbor looks like. He then suggests that describing Christian life as "gratitude naturally evokes a sense of life lived before God. The book concludes by examining whether life before God requires a sense of God's presence -- and whether it is possible to live before God even in those times when he seems to be absent. Offering thought-provoking analysis of modern faith and sound direction for spiritual renewal, "Before God is perfect for churches, study groups, pastors, and individuals pursuing genuine discipleship.

Part II, The Long Nineteenth-Century, presents the great movements and figures arising out of these creative tension - from Romanticism and Schleiermacher to Ritschlianism and Vatican I. Part III, Twentieth-Century Crisis and Modernity, proceeds through the revolutionary theologies of period of the World Wars such as that of Karl Barth or novuelle theologie; this part includes a thorough section on modern Eastern Orthodox theology. Finally, Part IV, The Late Modern Supernova, lays out the diverse panoply of recent theologies - from the various liberation theologies to the revisionist, the secular, the postliberal, and the postsecular. Book excerpt: On the surface, Grace Hwang is an average 20-year-old girl. She is soft-spoken, kind, and has a warm heart-at least this is what she has led others to believe. But Grace has a secret. At the age of 6, she was accused of murdering her entire family (an event she has no memory of). From that moment on, she has led life as a sadistic girl who revels in the misery of others. Grace's evil tendency has been her most well-kept secret . . . until a mysterious supernatural entity-the strikingly gorgeous Demon of Lust-enters her life to claim what's left of her humanity. He not only wants her soul, but he also wants to turn her into a Demon. Grace's world is shaken to its core. She has always known that she was born different. Now, with the Prince of Hell after her soul, she will find out just how different-and dangerous-she is. Something evil is coming to this world . . . and Grace is going to be the source of it all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argues that Hegel’s conception of God and the self holds the key to overcoming subjectivism in both philosophy of religion and metaphysics. God and the Self in Hegel proposes a reconstruction of Hegel’s conception of God and analyzes the significance of this reading for Hegel’s idealistic metaphysics. Paolo Diego Bubbio argues that in Hegel’s view, subjectivism—the tenet that there is no underlying “true” reality that exists independently of the activity of the cognitive agent—can be avoided, and content can be restored to religion, only to the extent that God is understood in God’s relation to human beings, and human beings are understood in their relation to God. Focusing on traditional problems in theology and the philosophy of religion, such as the ontological argument for the existence of God, the Trinity, and the “death of God,” Bubbio shows the relevance of Hegel’s view of religion and God for his broader philosophical strategy. In this account, as a response to the fundamental Kantian challenge of how to conceive the mind-world relation without setting mind over and against the world, Hegel has found a way of overcoming subjectivism in both philosophy and religion.

Book excerpt: Volume 4 Sermons 166-224 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach everyone in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to republish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

Mirroring an eclipse, the summer sun disappears behind a circle of darkness as a young man faces his foe of cancer. The hands of time cease their journey as questions go unanswered and prayers seem unheard. There is One who does hear, though-One who stands in that darkness. God knows that the eclipse will come and the world will be without light. His plans will unfold as the sun once again slips into view. It happened at the cross; it still happens today ... Gently tucked within these pages are stories created from such a time. For those who mourn, those who seek, those who feel the sun will never again shine, Beyond the Eclipse beckons.
