Book excerpt: Serenity dwells in the souls of all humans who call the land of Tordale home-a noble form of magic that can heal, protect, and enlighten. With it, the ancient heroes Ralu and Xogun were able to save their kingdom from the catastrophe known only as Scourge. In her dying moments, Ralu foretold the destiny of future heroes who would assume the sacred powers which she and Xogun left behind in the world of the living-the Radia, the vessels of their incomparable Serenity. After seven hundred years, Scourge has returned, taking on a new, deadlier form that threatens to shroud all of Tordale in darkness. Where so many fall before the calamity, it is a young swordsman, Alamor, and a young princess, Raissa Hokara, who may offer the only hope of saving their world from annihilation and fulfilling the prophecy that the people of Tordale call the Legend of Light- When Scourge reawakens and casts its shadow over the land The Echoes of Light shall rise, challenging it with purest magic in hand Proving their will, faith, and truth in the world's darkest hour A Gleaming Path shall lead them to Tordale's inexorable power Guided by valor and mercy to thwart all that is malice and hate They who wield the light shall usher in a Radiant Fate

Book excerpt: Is it so easily defined between good and evil? The Millieu, forged by a millennium of brutal war between heaven and hell, has now flourished under the command of the Red Emperor- the only Ange left of his kind. With the emperor’s grace, the strong nation of Avalon has stayed dominant against its other two rivaling countries. Another millennium has passed, and the savagery of war has mostly forgotten, replaced by the illusion of tranquil, reinforced by people’s blind ignorance. But the war is far from over, residing at the north is a vast land of Bhadura. Covered by desert, beneath the deadly sandstorms lies a hidden enemy, which has the power to bring threat to the mighty Avalon. Guarding the Holy Nation of Avalon is the group of holy knights of four. The Four Saints- a title granted by the emperor to his greatest warriors, with powers rival to the gods, they won countless battles against this unknown enemy. They are closing in towards the front door of the enemy, solely for the sake of peace. Now, there’s a boy in his youth from the peaceful nation of Rosaria, in a bustling harbour city of Neberium, is hoping to become one of the Saints. With the light of hope, and the flames of hatred, he walks the path where his future is undetermined....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay on "what the imagination has made of the phenomenon of echo,” John Hollander examines aspects of the figure of echo in light of their significance for poetry. Looking at echo in its literal, acoustic sense, echo in myth, and echo as literary allusion, Hollander concludes with a study of the rhetorical status of the figure of echo and an examination of the ancient and newly interesting trope of metalepsis, or transumption, which it appears to embody. Centered on ways in which Milton's poetry echoes, and is echoed by, other texts, The Figure of Echo also explores Spenser and other Renaissance writers; romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth; and modern poets including Hardy, Eliot, Stevens, Frost, Williams, and Hart Crane. This book has implications for literary theory and holds great practical interest for students and teachers of American and English literature of all periods. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Prinslo’s introduction to and concise commentary on Psalms. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.

Book excerpt: Ivy and her sisters have a secret: their reclusive Great-Aunt is actually Adela Madden, inspired author of the fantasy classic, Ivory Apples. Generations of obsessive fans have searched for Adela, poring over her letters, sharing their theories online, and gathering at book conventions. It is just a matter of time before one fan gets too close. So when the seemingly-perfect Kate Burden appears at the local park, Ivy knows that something isn’t right. Kate has charmed the entire family, but she is suspiciously curious about Ivory Apples. And Ivy must protect what she and her Great-Aunt share: magic that is real, untamable, and—despite anyone’s desire—always prefers choosing its own vessel.

Book excerpt: The theory of “literary worlds” has become increasingly important in comparative and world literatures. But how are the often-contradictory elements of Eastern and Western literatures to cohere in the new worlds such contact creates? Drawing on the latest work in philosophical logic and analytic Asian philosophy, this monograph proposes a new model of literary worlds that is best suited to comparative literature dealing with Western and East Asian traditions. Unlike much discussion of world literature anchored in North American traditions, featured here is the transnational work of artists, philosophers, and poets writing in English, French, Japanese and Mandarin in the twentieth century. Rather than imposing sharp borders, this book suggests that vague boundaries link Eastern and Western literary works and traditions, and that degrees of distance can better help us to see the multiple dimensions that both distinguish and join together literary worlds East and West. As such, it enables us to grasp not only how East Asian and Western writers translate one another’s works into their own languages and traditions, but also how modern writers East and West modify their own traditions in order to make them fit in the new constellation of literary worlds brought about by the complex flow of literary information across twentieth-century Eurasia.
