Book Synopsis Coherence and Energy Transfer in Glasses by : Brage Golding
Download or read book Coherence and Energy Transfer in Glasses written by Brage Golding and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the physics of disordered systems has been one of the most active and fruitful areas of research in condensed matter science. In contrast to the considerable attention paid by conferences, schools and workshops to the static and structural aspects of glasses, there has been no forum devoted primarily to the dynamic and energetic aspects of amorphous solids. The NATO Workshop on Coherence and Energy Transfer in Glasses was organized to address this deficiency. The intent was to bring together in an intense and interactive environment, experts in several rather disparate subfields relating to the dynamics and energetics of disordered systems. This volume represents the Proceedings of that Workshop, which took place in September 1982 at Clare College of Cambridge University. Forty-three scientists from eight NATO countries participated. These included representatives from universities and industrial laboratories, as well as government research institutions. The meeting was organized into eight formal sessions and one informal session devoted entirely to unstructured discussion. Each formal session featured two comprehensive lectures. An additional 60 to 90 minutes was devoted in each session to discussions and contributions related to the lectures. Since only about 60% of the session time was devoted to formal presentations, the discussions formed an equally important part of the workshop. The chairmen and discussion leaders - as well as the workshop participants themselves - brought forth lively and illuminating discussions for each session.

Book excerpt: This unique volume presents a comprehensive but accessible introduction to the field of ultrafast two-dimension infrared (2D IR) vibrational echo spectroscopy based on the pioneering work of Professor Michael D Fayer, Department of Chemistry, Stanford University, USA. It contains in one place a qualitative introduction to the field of 2D IR spectroscopy and a comprehensive set of scientific papers that underlie the qualitative discussion. The introductory material contains several detailed illustrations, and is based on the Centenary Lecture at the Indian Institute of Science given by Professor Fayer July 16, 2008 as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of IIS in Bangalore, India. The second part of the volume contains reprints of Fayer's relevant papers. The compilation will be very useful because it presents the historical background, motivation, methodology, and experimental results at a level that is accessible to the non-expert. The reprints of the scientific papers, from review articles to detailed theoretical papers, provide rigorous supporting material so that the reader can delve as deeply as desired into the subject.

But Zapparoni is worried that the scientists he depends on might sell his secrets. He needs a chief of security, and Richard, a veteran and war hero, is ready for the job. However, when he arrives at the beautiful country compound that is Zapparoni's headquarters, he finds himself subjected to an unexpected ordeal. Soon he is led to question his past, his character, and even his senses....

Book Synopsis Echoes of my Soul by : Robert K. Tanenbaum
Download or read book Echoes of my Soul written by Robert K. Tanenbaum and published by Pinnacle Books. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a New York Times–bestselling author: An account of the murder case and coerced confession that led to the birth of Miranda rights—“Unfailingly riveting” (Vincent Bugliosi). It was a muggy summer day in 1963 when Janice Wylie and Emily Hoffert were murdered in their apartment on New York City’s Upper East Side. Months passed before police arrested George Whitmore Jr., and he confessed to the crime. But his incarceration would entail a host of shocking law enforcement missteps and cover-ups. In this insider account, attorney and New York Times–bestselling author Robert K. Tanenbaum delivers a page-turning, real-life thriller about this historic case—from the brutal crime to the wrenching conviction, which forever reformed the American justice system. Echoes of My Soul chronicles both the infamous “Career Girls Murders” and the aftermath that ultimately led to the Supreme Court’s Miranda decision, as well as the abolition of the death penalty in New York State. This is “the most powerful story of American justice in our time”—a true account of two brutal murders, the innocent man convicted of the crime, and the young DA who refused to give up until justice was served (Linda Fairstein). “Thrilling and insightful.” —Publishers Weekly “Many of the elements of the narrative are inherently fascinating: the circumstances of the crimes in Manhattan and Brooklyn, the police investigations, the prosecutors’ deliberations and the courtroom dramatics . . . A nonfiction murder mystery, an intriguing saga.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis Animal Sonar by : Paul E. Nachtigall
Download or read book Animal Sonar written by Paul E. Nachtigall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first meeting on biosonar that I had the opportunity to attend was held in 1978 on the Island of Jersey in the English Channel. That meeting, organized by Professor R.G. Busne1 and Dr. Jim Fish, was my introduction to an exciting and varied group of hard-working and dedicated scientists studying animal echolocation. They are, by nature, a very diverse group. They tend to publish in different journals and rarely interact despite the fact that they all work on echolocation. When they do interact as a group, as they did in Frascati Italy in 1966, in Jersey i~ 1978, and during the meeting reported in this volume, the meetings are intense, interesting, and exciting. This volume is a composition of a series of contributed papers written to foster an interdisciplinary understanding of the echolocation systems of animals. The echolocation pulse production studies in bats and dolphins have recently been concentrated on the ontogeny of infant pulses, other studies, with three-dimensional computer graphics and x-ray computed tomography, have concentrated on finally resolving the old controversy concerning the site of dolphin echolocation click production. Much has been accomplished on the analysis of bat neural structure and function. The intense effort directed toward understanding the structure, connections, and functional properties of parallel auditory pathways and the parallel and hierarchical processing of information by the mustached bat, has lead to dramatic breakthroughs in understanding brain function.

Book Synopsis Relaxation Processes in Molecular Excited States by : J. Fünfschilling
Download or read book Relaxation Processes in Molecular Excited States written by J. Fünfschilling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relaxation phenomena of excited molecular states are abundant in all nature. They mediate such key processes as photochemical reactions or even the pathways of ordinary chemical reactions. However, for a long time the main research in electronic relaxation processes was concerned with anorganic solids, in part because of their great technological importance (photography, semiconductors ... ) in part also because these compounds were the "workhorses" of the solid state physicists. In the last 30 years, there was a steadily increasing interest in organic molecular systems, first in molecular crystals and later in all forms of molecular solids (glasses, polymers, membranes, ... ). The present volume combines papers on quite different types of relaxation phenomena: the type of solid studied, the electronic states involved, the physical processes responsible for the relaxations are all different. Nevertheless, after reading this book, a more clear and complete picture of the phenomenon "relaxa tion" emerges that proves that this volume is more than just a collection of individual articles. The volume starts with the paper "Spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation in photo-excited triplet states in molecular crystals" by Jan Schmidt. Even in these seemingly simple systems of isolated guest molecules in a single crystal host, the relaxation phenomena are quite involved and a very thorough investigation is necessary to find the key relaxation processes. The end of the article provides a bridge to the following paper: it treats interactions of two molecules (dimers), where resonant interactions become important and lead to new, characteristic relaxation processes.
