Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first view of Colorado was from the arms of my maternal grandmother, Mary Clarissa Cade, when I was eight months old. She brought me to Pueblo while my mother hopefully recovered from typhoid fever in far-off Arkansas. Two months later, Mary realized this little girl would be her responsibility from then on, and already Little Fern, as I was called, was determined to call her grandmother "Mama." My view changed as I graduated from my baby crib to following her around the garden in the backyard and learning to identify creeping things along the path. My grandfather, JW Cade, taught me to be seen and not heard and go to bed "with the chickens," which I cheerfully ignored. My uncles and aunts and cousins taught me to feel accepted and honor my parents example of love. As I grew, I realized that Pikes Peak was a beautiful skyline, and my tree swing that hung from the backyard elm tree was a place to not only swing but read and sing and dream. The last view I treasured, even when I finally returned to Arkansas, was at night with the star-studded sky above just as in Colorado, where I dreamed I saw my parents and other dear ones above them looking down at me. Along with the music I learned there, I knew there were angels singing and watching over me, awaiting the time when we would all finally see home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is filled with memories and ill remembered events, and to reawaken, relive, and record them for others is a daunting task that few embark upon. Echoes from the Mountains is an engaging, honest, and humorous portrayal of the challenges, opportunities, and complex issues involved in managing and protecting Colorado wildlife in a career of more than three decades in the Southern Rockies and balancing the often competing interests of people who find joy in Colorado's wildlife. Profoundly influenced by his father who nourished his interest in the outdoors, hunting and fishing, Glen followed his dream of living a life as Wildlife Officer, bringing passion and enthusiasm for seeking common sense solutions to the problems of wildlife management which is almost every case involves the management of the state's citizens and visitors. He diffused dicey and tense encounters with firmness, good will, and humor. Every bend in the trail was an adventure. Deeply appreciative of what he learned from others, he was never too busy or too self centered to quit learning from those who were more experienced. Always willing to work with the young and less experienced, he himself became a master teacher and team builder. He rejoiced in doing new things, mastering new challenges, and doing old tasks differently. His experiences allowed his qualities as a teacher, learner, and leader to etch an indelible mark upon the region as witnessed by his leadership in his numerous capacities. In his first book "Crusaders for Wildlife" A History of Wildlife Stewardship in Southwestern Colorado's wildlife, Glen paid tribute to the forest rangers, game wardens, biologists, and citizens who restored our wildlife heritage. Echoes from the Mountains is the personal side of being a Wildlife Officer in some of the most isolated, rugged and beautiful mountains in Colorado. For understanding the daily life, joys, pleasures, and dangers of being a Wildlife Officer for the State of Colorado, no better account can be found.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes From Peak and Plain: Or, Tales of Life, War, Travel and Colorado Methodism This book is the outcome of a lifetime of active service, covering more than threescore years. It is not a biography, yet it contains much that is biographic. It is not a history, yet it is full of historical matter. Those reading it will, I trust, be instructed and helped the more bravely to fight the battles of life. The aim of the writer has been to present facts in a plain way, not to give occasion to the chronic croaker, but to cheer the voyager on life's rough sea. This book has been prepared from the standpoint of the "Rank and File" in the itinerancy, and as a stimulus to all laborers in the Master's vineyard. Heartfelt gratitude is hereby expressed to those who have aided in the preparation of this volume, either by furnishing facts and sketches, or otherwise especially to Peter Winnie, Esq., secretary of the Colorado Conference Historical Society, who has cheerfully given access to all its archives; also to my brother, the present well-known secretary of the Colorado Conference, Rev. H. L. Beardslcy, for permission to examine ever document in the Conference trunk; to Rev. W. F. Steele, D. D., professor in the Iliff School of Theology, for consultations, freely given, and for sundry suggestions while reading the manuscript. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize finalist David Philipps brings to life the chilling story of how today's American heroes are slipping through the fingers of society—with multiple tours of duty and inadequate mental-health support creating a crisis of PTSD and a large-scale failure of veterans to reintegrate into society. Following the frightening narrative of the 506th Infantry Regiment—who had rebranded themselves as the Lethal Warriors after decades as the Band of Brothers—he reveals how the painful realities of war have multiplied in recent years, with tragic outcomes for America's soldiers, compounded by an indifferent government and a shrinking societal safety net.

Book excerpt: In Wild Echoes, environmentalist and photographer Charles Bergman chronicles his experiences tracking down and interacting with the few remaining members of nine of North America's most endangered species. Bergman soars in the company of two of the last remaining California condors, swims with manatees, assists in the capture and release of a Florida panther, and comes face to face with the last remaining dusky seaside sparrow, a species now extinct. As he relates these and other poignant encounters, Bergman describes the factors, both manufactured and natural, that have led to the animals' endangerment. He also examines the efforts of those who hope to pull species back from the brink of extinction. Wild Echoes was originally published in 1990; this 2003 edition contains a new introduction and substantial updates on the good news and the bad concerning the current status of the species Bergman discusses.
