Book excerpt: In 1389, a great battle occurred in Kosovo, on the Field of Blackbirds, which would live in infamy in Serbian historical memory. The Battle of Kosovo between the Ottoman, Sultan Murad, and Serbian, Prince Lazar, was the final Serbian defense against Ottoman encroachment and occupation of the Balkans. Many significant international events have taken place on the anniversary of the Battle, called Vidovdan, such as the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the expulsion of Yugoslavia from the Soviet Politburo. The Serbian people have remembered continued to commemorate the Battle for over 600 years, although it was considered among Serbs to be a decisive defeat. The Serbian commemorative expression of the Battle of Kosovo has evolved over time and can be loosely defined in four time periods.

Addie and Eva barely survived the explosion at the Powatt institution, but they refuse to sit still as the nation ripples with rebellion. When an ambitious reporter offers Addie and Eva the chance to go undercover and film the wretched conditions of a hybrid institution, the girls jump at the chance to once again take part in the fight for hybrid freedom. As Eva and Addie walk into danger, they cling to each other and the hope of a better future. But the price they might pay is higher than they ever could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To translate the journey from a living cow to a glass of milk into tangible terms, Kathryn Gillespie set out to follow the moments in the life cycles of individual animals—animals like the cow with ear tag #1389. She explores how the seemingly benign practice of raising animals for milk is just one link in a chain that affects livestock across the agricultural spectrum. Gillespie takes readers to farms, auction yards, slaughterhouses, and even rendering plants to show how living cows become food. The result is an empathetic look at cows and our relationship with them, one that makes both their lives and their suffering real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency and probability of radar echoes of convective clouds over the United States are presented. Analysis of three years of observations from a 31-station WSR-57 weather radar network indicates that at all altitudes, radar echo probabilities are greatest over Florida and the Gulf coast, generally decreasing northward over the United States. Also, largest probabilities for most layers and locations occur in summer. Echoes have been reported up to at least 70 kft in May, June, and July, and up to 60 kft in winter. Diurnal variations reveal greatest probabilities between 1600 and 2100 LST in all regions. Largest mean monthly 3-hour values are 85 percent, and the maximum mean daily range is roughly 65 percent in the southeast during the summer months. The probability of an echo-free horizontal view near the earth's surface for a 100-mile range is also presented. Tabulations of echo-free sectors, as percent of the 360-degree radar scope, show that the probability of obstructions to a horizontal view increases generally from northwest to southwest during all seasons. The probability of having no echoes is greater in winter than in summer except along the Pacific coastal region. Diurnal variability is larger in July than in January. (Author)

Book excerpt: Many of the world's most serious agricultural pests are highly migratory. Through the use of special-purpose radars we are provided with insights into their movement and how they learn about and navigate through their environment. This text examines the behaviour and regional variations of these species, as well as the altitude of migration, concentration of insects in layers and how they respond to large and small-scale wind systems. The book relates radar observation of insect movement to complementary and competing methodologies and surveys its capabilities and limitations. It also deals wi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an examination of Jewish communal memory in Prague in the century and a half stretching from its position as cosmopolitan capital of the Holy Roman Empire (1583-1611) through Catholic reform and triumphalism in the later seventeenth century, to the eve of its encounter with Enlightenment in the early eighteenth. Rachel Greenblatt approaches the subject through the lens of the community's own stories—stories recovered from close readings of a wide range of documents as well as from gravestones and other treasured objects in which Prague's Jews recorded their history. On the basis of this material, Greenblatt shows how members of this community sought to preserve for future generations their memories of others within the community and the events that they experienced. Throughout, the author seeks to go beyond the debates inspired by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi's influential Zakhor: Jewish History and Jewish Memory, often regarded as the seminal work in the field of Jewish communal memory, by focusing not on whether Jews in a pre-modern community had a historical consciousness, but rather on the ways in which they perceived and preserved their history. In doing this, Greenblatt opens a window onto the roles that local traditions, aesthetic sensibilities, gender, social hierarchies, and political and financial pressures played in the construction of local memories.
