Book Synopsis The Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence by : Hugh Syme
Download or read book The Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence written by Hugh Syme and published by IDW Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly expanded and updated, this beautiful coffee table book delves into the 40-year relationship between Rush and their longtime artist and illustrator, with a foreword by drummer and lyricist Neil Peart! Containing original illustrations, paintings, photography, and the incredible stories behind each album that Hugh Syme has designed with the band since 1975. The book's narration was written by music journalist Stephen Humphries and includes in-depth interviews with each Rush band member and the artist. The Art of Rush also contains entertaining anecdotes and commentary from a wide array of notable musicians, actors, athletes, writers, radio personalities, and Rush insiders about their favorite Rush album covers, which clearly reveals how vital and impactful the visual representation of their music has been through the years. One of the hallmark's of Rush releases is the considerable care and consideration that goes into each one--including the conceptual artwork. Readers may be surprised to discover just how much effort went into each concept and the execution for every album cover! Some of the regaled stories include furtively crossing the border for a guerilla-style shoot for A Farewell to Kings, trying to herd a warren of rabbits for the cover of Presto, descending into the depths of an autopsy lab to find a brain for Hemispheres, and a stunt involving fire, whiskey, and photographer Deborah Samuel for Moving Pictures. But no history of the band's art would be complete without the story of the creation of arguably the band's most iconic image, The Starman from 2112. "From the first time Hugh and I met, we shared a level of communication that would sustain us through all the years of discussing art by long distance," says Rush's Neil Peart. The Art Of Rush is a must for fans of Rush, art, and music everywhere.

Book Synopsis Space and Spatialization in Contemporary Music: History and Analysis, Ideas and Implementations by : Maria Anna Harley
Download or read book Space and Spatialization in Contemporary Music: History and Analysis, Ideas and Implementations written by Maria Anna Harley and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the history of space in the musical thought of the 20th century (from Kurth to Clifton, from Varese to Xenakis) and outlines the development of spatialization in the theory and practice of contemporary music (after 1950). The text emphasizes perceptual and temporal aspects of musical spatiality, thus reflecting the close connection of space and time in human experience. A new definition of spatialization draws from Ingarden's notion of the musical work; a typology of spatial designs embraces music for different acoustic environments, movements of performers and audiences, various positions of musicians in space, etc. The study of spatialization includes a survey of the composers's writings (lves, Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage, etc.) and an examination of their works. The final part presents three unique approaches to spatialization: Brant's simultaneity of sound layers, Xenakis's movement of sound, and Schafer's music of ritual and soundscape.

Book excerpt: My life has been a series of broken promises and shattered hopes. At fifteen, I've been through more than most people could handle—abuse, neglect, and the haunting memory of my father's fentanyl overdose. Every place I've called home has been just another lie, another echo of despair. Now I'm at Bright Future Group Home, and I can't help but be cynical. Safety and belonging? Sure. But then I meet Gabriel Lopez. He's kind, patient, and he sees something in me that I thought was long gone. Falling for him is unexpected, but it's the first time I've felt something real, something worth holding onto. But this place has its own shadows. Derrick Mason, another resident, has dark secrets that threaten to drag me back into the abyss. School is a daily battle, and the group home is a minefield. The art room becomes my sanctuary, where I can escape into my drawings, and the garden offers a brief respite from the chaos. My struggles are more than just about finding a place to belong. I grapple with the abuse I've suffered, the cultural roots I feel detached from, and the fact that I'm gay in a world that hasn't been kind. The echoes of my past are always there, reminding me of every broken promise and every ounce of pain. "Echoes" is my story—a fight against the despair that clings to me, a journey to find trust and love in the midst of chaos. Gabriel is my anchor, but Derrick's secrets and my own fears are powerful forces. Can I overcome the shadows of my past and find a future worth fighting for? Join me on this raw and powerful journey through the echoes of my life, where love, pain, and the search for belonging intertwine. This isn't just about surviving—it's about finding the strength to truly live.
