Book excerpt: On a national scale Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the population, and in the state of Texas the Hispanic population is projected to eclipse non-Hispanic whites as the largest race or ethnic group within the next decade. However, today we are experiencing a growing gender gap in academic achievement across the P-16 educational continuum. In fact, compared to their Latina peers, Latino males are more likely to repeat a grade, be suspended and expelled, placed in special education, diagnosed as ADHD, and drop out or be pushed out of school. Additionally, Latino males' continue to be underrepresented in U.S. institutions of higher education participation and completion rates. Previous literature demonstrates how cultural, social, and psychological factors have impacted the college experiences of Latino students. However, only recently has there emerged literature that takes into account the distinctive experiences of Latino males in college. This qualitative study specifically examined how twelve Latino male students experienced help-seeking at two North Texas community college campuses, using the Model for College Students' Help-Seeking Experiences, which takes into account Achievement Goal Theory (motivation), Attribution Theory (academic-control), and Help-Avoidance (basis for avoiding help-seeking) as tools of analysis. The primary data collection sources included demographic information form, semi-structured face-to-face interviews, documents and artifacts, analytical and reflective memos, and observation field notes. The findings of this study revealed differing motivational factors for achievement related behavior, high sense of perceived academiccontrol, as well as means for avoiding help-seeking.

Even as the number of Latinas/os attending college has actually increased steadily over the last few decades, the proportional representation of Latino males continues to slide relative to their Latina female counterparts. The question of why Latino males are losing ground in accessing higher education—relative to their peers—is an important and complex one, and it lies at the heart of this book. There are several broad themes highlighted, catalogued along with the four dimensions of policy, theory, research, and practice. The contributors to this book present new research on factors that inhibit or promote Latino success in both four-year institutions and community colleges in order to inform both policy and practice. They explore the social-cultural factors, peer dynamics, and labor force demands that may be perpetuating the growing gender gap, and consider what lessons can be learned from research on the success of Latinas. This study strives to offer insights concerning the questions: (a) what behavioral patterns of current family, peers, and conditions in school have influenced the educational decisions of these Mexican American males? and (b) what social conditions motivate these Mexican American males to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity? This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

However, the Hispanic population educational attainment level lags behind that of the general population. Hispanic males are the lowest educated segment of society averaging less than a high school diploma. The negative long-term economic impact of such low educational attainment levels coupled with the rapid increase of the Hispanic population has been documented by Texas state demographers as well as the U.S. Census Bureau. The researcher conducted a qualitative study to inform a deeper understanding of the experiences that facilitated the persistence of 18 Hispanic male first-time-in-college students through the official reporting date of their fall first term at a community college in South Texas. An asset model and related conceptual framework, which recognized students as experts, were utilized. Focus group interviews, semi-structured interviews, and existing data were analyzed utilizing qualitative research methods. The researcher identified six overarching themes that significantly influenced the students' ability to persist. In addition, analysis of the data produced five barrier themes that these students overcame via the utilization of corresponding knowledge and actions themes. Finally, students provided recommended college changes for mitigating the barriers faced by future Hispanic male students. The researcher provided conclusions regarding Hispanic male students, recommendations for students, recommendations for colleges and universities serving Hispanic male students, recommendations for the focal community college, and implications for the theoretical model utilized. The researcher recommended expanding this research to other institutions of higher education and notes the national implications for increasing the educational attainment level of Hispanic male students.

Guided by Yosso's (2005) Community Cultural Wealth framework, my dissertation examined the educational experiences of five Latino male students at a Southwest Community College. Latina/o students highlighted the challenges that they encountered, resources available to overcome these challenges, and their resiliency. The findings are indicative of the presence and utilization of aspirational, navigational and resilience capital driven by self-determination.

Book excerpt: Brief Literature Review: The Latino population is the fastest growing group in the nation, demands further consideration in academic research as well as a place in higher education (Brown, Santiago, & Lopez, 2003). The number of Latino students earning a bachelor's degree increased by 105% from 1990 to 2000 (NCES, 2003). But only 18.6% of these students achieved their goal of receiving a bachelor's degree within 8 years compared to 37.5% of Caucasian students (Swail, Cabrera, & Lee, 2004). This statistic becomes even more alarming when gender is considered; Latino males are more underrepresented in colleges compared to their Latina counterparts (NCES, 2003; Bailey, Jeong & Cho, 2010). Statement of the Problem: This research explores how family members, higher education personnel and peers supported Latino males transferring from a community college into a four year university. Using the following questions this study aims to understand the barriers, achievements and persistence of Latino male students who have historically been underrepresented in higher education, and are now becoming part of the rising number of ethnically diverse groups at colleges and universities. 1. What role does family play in supporting Latino male transfer students' in succeeding in higher education? 2. What role do higher education programs and the institution play in supporting Latino male transfer students' persistence in higher education? 3. What role do peers play in supporting Latino male transfer students' persistence in higher education? Methodology: This qualitative study attend to the ways in which academic, family and social factors impact Latino male students' success through the lived experiences of six Latino male transfer students. The author proceeded to analyze the data in order to determine common themes and experiences of Latino male students in higher education. Conclusion and Recommendations: This study concluded that Latino males who successfully transferred to Northern California University shared certain characteristics and experiences. Although Latino males experienced obstacles and challenges in academia, the support of family and the development of a sense of belonging in college appear to key to their academic success. It is the intention of this study for the result to be used by administrators and policy makers in order to create and maintain initiatives that speak to the needs of minority students and with special attention to the missing Latino male in higher education.

These gaps exist across higher education. They are undeniable and unacceptable. Men of color have high aspirations when they begin higher education. Why are these aspirations not matched by similarly high outcomes? Until higher education institutions fully embrace the charge of eliminating this disparity, we cannot effectively serve our students, our communities, our national economy, or our democracy. There are two reasons that community colleges can--and should--take the lead in this work. First, community colleges open their doors to all students, and they are the higher education institutions most likely to serve men of color. Second, open access is just the first step toward attaining the equity ingrained in the mission of community colleges. The more significant work is ensuring that every student has the support he or she needs to succeed. If community colleges can make this experience the norm for every student, the gaps will close. The Center for Community College Student Engagement has spent the past two years exploring data related to men of color in community colleges. Center staff members have worked with experts in the field, listened systematically to students, and conducted new analyses of Center data. The result is actionable, practical information that colleges can use to create the conditions for success. The issues discussed in this report can be deeply personal and emotionally difficult. Moreover, they play out against the backdrop of both the nation's history and the continuing reality of inequity across American social systems, including health, child welfare, employment, criminal justice, and education at all levels. These larger societal issues provide important context, but this report has a narrower focus. Directed to community college educators, it adds to a body of work by respected scholars and practitioners. It seeks to build understanding of the experiences of Latinos and Black males in community colleges--and offers strategies colleges should consider as they work to strengthen those experiences so they lead to better outcomes.

Many will have the familial encouragement, peer support, and aspirations to succeed with respect to their community college goal. However, many Latino male students are unsuccessful in their journey toward a community college certificate, associate's degree, or transfer to a university. The problem under investigation in this study was the achievement gap that Latino male students may experience in community colleges and the socioeconomic impact of this lack of educational opportunity. The purpose of this study was to explore the journey and experiences of 15 reentry Latino male community college students who achieved academic success after previously departing from the community college for a minimum of 1 year. Through ethnographic interview qualitative methodology, data were collected via 15 semistructured interviews of individuals who met the necessary criteria for this study. Findings suggested that Latino male students may not be informed or knowledgeable about higher education or possess the necessary navigational capital to excel at the community college. This study also revealed that Latino males may depart the community college in pursuit of employment opportunities to contribute to family expenses and to provide for themselves financially. Participants expressed that they returned to the community college to increase their career options and secure future employment with greater job security. Many participants expressed that a return to the community college was needed to fulfill a desire for a better life, to fulfill an original unaccomplished goal (educational and professional), or a new goal that was decided upon while away from the community college. Recommendations developed by this study included key partnerships among educational institutions geared toward major and career awareness, the importance of greater collaboration between the community college and partners in industry, and the role of work study for nontraditional student retention.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The objective of this study was to explore, identify, and gain an understanding of the experiences and contributing factors that affect Latino male students (LMS) attainment of a community college education or transfer to 4-year institutions. Hidden Hills College (HHC; pseudonym) is a large California community college located in an urban setting in Southern California. HHC is primarily a commuter campus and a Hispanic serving institution, regionally accredited by Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). This qualitative study included 22 interviews of currently enrolled students at HHC. The participants, selected based on the sampling criteria, consist of Latino males who had completed at least 24 units and were seeking an AA/AS or transfer to a 4-year institution (California State University, University of California, private). The students were between the ages of 18- 4. Additionally, through the literature review, aspirations, familial support, persistence, and challenges were summarized and analyzed, which provided an opportunity to learn about the different contributing factors that support or hinder the transfer or degree attainment of Latino males. The major findings showed that in relation to challenges experienced by LMS in the pursuit for an associate degree or transfer to a 4-year institution are cultural expectations, parents lack of understanding, financial hardship, lack of time, and lack of academic preparation. The study also revealed that in relation to strategies used by LMS in their efforts to pursue an associate degree or transfer to a 4-year institution are aspirations for a better future, family support, motivation, and campus resources. Recommendation for policy and practice focused on improving and promoting higher education for Latino males, as well as recommendations for further studies are presented.

Using a qualitative method, this study examined the experiences of Latino males at a South Central Texas Community College and a North Texas Community College. The proposed study utilized a qualitative design methodology, and a conceptual framework of Critical Theory as a lens to analyze the collected data. The study included, 1) Latino male student focus groups, 2) one-on-one administrator, faculty and staff interviews, 3) document analysis. The study answered two primary questions focusing on factors that influenced Latino males to attend and persist in community colleges. These firsthand accounts provided useful information for staff and community colleges interested in increasing the number of minority and Latino males in higher education. The study also attempts to advance discussion around the reality of the disappearing of Latino males in higher education. Using critical theory, this proposed research study explored relationships of factors that may involve inequities and power, and as Willis (2007), explains, a desirable aspect of critical research is to help those without power to acquire it. As such, data analysis is at the center of this study to understand factors associated to Latino male attendance and persistence at their community colleges.

In addition to their growth within the national population, Latina/o students are also the fastest growing group within educational settings. Despite the growing numbers of Latina/os within the larger society, and their increasing presence on college campuses, differences occur when disaggregating by other student identities (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, etc.). Latino males are not keeping pace relative to their male and female peers at key transition points along the education pipeline. Scholars have argued that experiences on college campuses of students of color profoundly differ with that of their White counterparts. Since campus racial climate is a critical component of the college environment, and a student's perception of college environment contribute to college outcomes, assessing the campus climate for Latino males is warranted. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of campus climate for Latino males at a community college. By understanding the processes involved in experiencing the campus climate, student affairs professionals will have a better understanding in tailoring their interventions to circumvent the negative consequences that are associated with "chilly" campus climates.

This study examines the transfer aspirations of Latino males in pre-baccalaureate education in the California Community College system. Findings from t -tests, factor analyses, and a logistic regression model suggest that there are differences between non-pre-baccalaureate and pre-baccalaureate Latino males related to financial aid, social interaction, and institutional commitment and fit. In addition to these differences, the logistic regression model demonstrated age, source of tuition, satisfaction with credit assistance, and satisfaction with the computer lab as being significant factors contributing toward transfer aspirations. Recommendations were made to streamline and improve policies and practices to better serve the pre-baccalaureate Latino male population.
