Book excerpt: In this study of Eastern Ojibwa, the late Leonard Bloomfield, first and greatest of structural linguists, presents his only extended treatment of the Central Algonquin syntax. A dialect of the Central Algonquin tongue, Ojibwa is spoken by the American Indians in the area of Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan; in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. The texts, transcribed as dictated by an informant and phonetically rendered by Bernard Bloch, include an Indian's childhood memories: Grandmother, The White Man, Falling in the Water, Spring Thunderstorm; as well as Indian Folklore: The Sweating Cure, Fasting, Burial Rites, Love Medicine. Working with this unique collection of texts, which includes in several instances two or three versions of the same story, Bloomfield solves the two great phonetic difficulties of Ojibwa: distinction of lenis and fortis consonants, and the distinction of long and short vowels.

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to acknowledge and honor past leaders of the Ojibwa tribe. I use the name Ojibwa largely in part due to habit. Some prefer to use "Chippewa," others prefer to use "Saulter" and lately many prefer "A-nish-in-a-beg." The time period covered in this book, is approximately 1690 - 1890 and includes the early French contact, British influence and finally the American accultration and alienation. The geographic area inhabited by the Ojibwa involved in this study includes Southern Ontario, Canada and the states of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The names are in alphabetical order, with the most popular name listed first. Many of the Chief's names are followed by the interpreted English name while other names could not be interpreted for various reasons -- from Pref.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central purpose of this book is to show that cannibalism has been practiced under certain conditions in a variety of cultures throughout the world. Twenty-five different cultures are presented in this book. The types of cannibalism covered include: exo-cannibalism, judicial, survival, endocannibalism, human sacrifice, biting, infanticide, funeral, slave, and Windigo and cannibalism. The origins and philosophy of cannibalism as well as cannibalism's relationship with food taboos and religion are also discussed. David A. Ezzo has been involved with the study of Native American Indian history and culture for over twenty-five years. His interest in the subject matter frist began when he earned his Indian Lore merit badge from Mr. Ronald P. Koch when he was 15 years old. His interest in the topic continued when he served as an Indian Lore counselor at Camp Turner for four summers in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1983. David began his academic study of Native Americans when he earned a BA degree in Anthropology from SUNY Fredonia in 1985. While at Fredonia he wrote two published articles and co-wrote a third article with one of his professors, Dr. Alvin H. Morrison. This article was presented at the 16th Algonquian Conference and was published a year later in 1986. David earned his MA in Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma in 1987. During his time at the University of Oklahoma he presented several papers including one at a Frontier Conference at OU in 1986 and also a paper at the Algonquian Conference. His MA thesis was also written on a Native American topic. The title of his thesis "Female Status in Northeastern North America" was a historical survey of the roles of Native American women in a number of Algonquian societies. During subsequent years David continued to attend and publish papers at Algonquian Conferences. He also continued to serve as a BSA Indian Merit badge counselor. In June of 2005 David earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Richardson University. Also in August of 2005 he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Erie Community College (North Campus). In July of 2007 David published his first book "Papers on Historical Algonquian and Iroquois Topics" which he co-authored with Michael H. Moskowitz. This book was also published by Dog Ear Publishing.

Book excerpt: Dennis Banks, an American Indian of the Ojibwa Tribe and a founder of the American Indian Movement, is one of the most influential Indian leaders of our time. In Ojibwa Warrior, written with acclaimed writer and photographer Richard Erdoes, Banks tells his own story for the first time and also traces the rise of the American Indian Movement (AIM). The authors present an insider’s understanding of AIM protest events—the Trail of Broken Treaties march to Washington, D.C.; the resulting takeover of the BIA building; the riot at Custer, South Dakota; and the 1973 standoff at Wounded Knee. Enhancing the narrative are dramatic photographs, most taken by Richard Erdoes, depicting key people and events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most dynamic Aboriginal peoples in western Canada today are the Ojibwa, who have played an especially vital role in the development of an Aboriginal political voice at both levels of government. Yet, they are relative newcomers to the region, occupying the parkland and prairies only since the end of the 18th century. This work traces the origins of the western Ojibwa, their adaptations to the West, and the ways in which they have coped with the many challenges they faced in the first century of their history in that region, between 1780 and 1870. The western Ojibwa are descendants of Ojibwa who migrated from around the Great Lakes in the late 18th century. This was an era of dramatic change. Between 1780 and 1870, they survived waves of epidemic disease, the rise and decline of the fur trade, the depletion of game, the founding of non-Native settlement, the loss of tribal lands, and the government's assertion of political control over them. As a people who emerged, adapted, and survived in a climate of change, the western Ojibwa demonstrate both the effects of historic forces that acted upon Native peoples, and the spirit, determination, and adaptive strategies that the Native people have used to cope with those forces. This study examines the emergence of the western Ojibwa within this context, seeing both the cultural changes that they chose to make and the continuity within their culture as responses to historical pressures. The Ojibwa of Western Canada differs from earlier works by focussing closely on the details of western Ojibwa history in the crucial century of their emergence. It is based on documents to which pioneering scholars did not have access, including fur traders' and missionaries' journals, letters, and reminiscences. Ethnographic and archaeological data, and the evidence of material culture and photographic and art images, are also examined in this well-researched and clearly written history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Brendan Fairbanks examines the challenging subject of discourse markers in Ojibwe, one of the many indigenous languages in the Algonquian family. Mille Lacs elder Jim Clark once described the discourse markers as “little bugs that are holding on for dear life.” For example, discourse markers such as mii and gosha exist only on the periphery of sentences to provide either cohesion or nuance to utterances. Fairbanks focuses on the discourse markers that are the most ubiquitous and that exist most commonly within Ojibwe texts. Much of the research on Algonquian languages has concentrated primarily on the core morphological and syntactical characteristics of their sentence structure. Fairbanks restricts his study to markers that are far more elusive and difficult in terms of semantic ambiguity and their contribution to sentences and Ojibwe discourse. Ojibwe Discourse Markers is a remarkable study that interprets and describes the Ojibwe language in its broader theoretical concerns in the field of linguistics. With a scholarly and pedagogical introductory chapter and a glossary of technical terms, this book will be useful to instructors and students of Ojibwe as a second language in language revival and maintenance programs.
