Through painstaking research and analysis, Hulse has accomplished an unprecedented feat -- that of reconstructing the basic underlying systems that form the vast legacy of mystery traditions. The real genius of this accomplishment is that it is presented in a way that is immediately understandable and usable. Although the book deals with many foreign scripts, ancient tongues, and lost symbols, it is designed for the beginning student. Book excerpt: The Western Mysteries (previously published as The Key of It All, Book II: The Western Mysteries), by David Allen Hulse, is perhaps the most comprehensive, in-depth description of various aspects of the Western magickal tradition ever published. The uniting factor of this book is language. It begins with a discussion of the mysteries of the Greek alphabet, followed by the different forms of the Runes, and goes on to describe the mystical secrets of Latin. It also explores Enochian, where you will discover, for the first time ever, the correctly constructed Watchtower system. The book also includes the mysteries of the Tarot, a pictorial language, and it describes the development of the esoteric Tarot, how to do readings, and the significance of the symbolism on the Tarot cards. It concludes with the English language and its relationship to the Tarot, Enochian, and more. The introduction to The Western Mysteries serves as a complete introduction to the magickal tradition of the West. You will learn about the evolution of thought concerning the Elements, astrology, magick squares, geomancy, words of power, and more. You will find that each section of this book is a key that unlocks the meaning behind another of the magickal languages that you can relate to your own spiritual system. It is ideal for a beginning student to explore the mysteries of Western magick. It is a necessary tool for more advanced students, as it has collected hundreds of charts and lists which clarify and identify the similarities and differences between various systems. This is a reference book you will study over and over. The volume of information revealed makes The Western Mysteries an instant classic and a necessity for any spiritual practitioner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steiner gives a sketch of the evolution of the Mysteries from ancient Persia, through Egypt and Greece, to the Christian era and the present day with the modern initiation of the Holy Grail. LECTURE SYNOPSES: Lecture 1 -- February 3, 191, Everything belonging to the mysteries is based on the experiences of initiates in the higher worlds. The principles of initiation change in the successive epochs. Attainment of initiation today is possible without personal guidance, but one's experiences must be carried through correctly. Sensory impressions become a means of experiencing what lies behind them. "Opinions" and "views" must be transcended. Some experiences are common to all mysteries, whether of the East or the West. Contact with death, passage through the elemental world, seeing the Sun at midnight, meeting with the higher and lower gods. The path into higher worlds is connected with strengthening of the soul's inner forces.; Lecture 2 -- February 4, 1913, Natural and moral laws mingle in the spiritual world. Morally irresponsible souls must serve terrible beings after death. Untimely, deaths, epidemics, and illnesses are caused by spiritual forces and beings. After death, souls subject to laziness become the servants of the adversarial gods led by Ahriman. Certain characteristics are suitable or unsuitable for the development of clairvoyance. A seer has direct perception of the interaction of influences from the Earth and those from cosmic space. Experience at a definite stage of the mysteries is that in respect of the higher members of his being (astral body and "I") man belongs not only to the Earth but is also at home in the cosmos.; Lecture 3 -- February 5, 1913, Ascent into the spiritual worlds is accompanied through certain necessary experiences. Possibility of a retrospect into the far past and reading the akashic record. In the higher worlds, a clairvoyant can discern the activities of beings associated with the Sun and the Moon in engendering human physical and etheric bodies. How the astral body and "I" are brought into being is veiled in secrecy. Steiner discusses the Zarathustra initiation, the Hermetic initiation, and two phases of the Isis initiation, separated by the time of Moses. When Moses led his people out of Egypt he took with him the part of the Egyptian initiation that added the Osiris initiation to that of the mourning Isis. Steiner discusses the "Sons of the Widow". In the later Egyptian initiation the candidate experienced the dying of a god in the heavens in order to descend into another world.; Lecture 4 -- February 7, 1913, The being formerly known spiritually as the "Creative Word" first manifested physically when Moses heard the "Ejeh asher Ejeh." Candidates in the later Egyptian mysteries felt that the Creative Word was disappearing. When it reappeared, belonging now to earthly evolution, it became known as the Holy Grail. Every epoch repeats the earlier experiences of humanity. Secrets of the Egyptian-Chaldean epoch were related to the influx forces of the zodiac and planets, especially those of the Sun and Moon. In the fifth epoch, those secrets must work right into the consciousness soul, or human personality. Inspirations from the twelve directions of the zodiac flowed into the twelve knights of King Arthur's round table. All that is dead and withdrawn from the sovereignty of the soul must be enlivened again through the new wisdom of the Grail. Teaching is now no longer connected with particular localities. Dual nature in Goethe and in many men of the modern age is still under the influence of the intellectual soul. Parsifal: the ideal of later initiation. Modern mysteries are an aftereffect of the Grail mystery. The Amfortas nature in human beings must be recognized before the forces of Parsifal can be developed in human nature.

Book excerpt: "And however paradoxical it may seem today, the 'Grail mood' is in the fullest sense to be found in Russia. And the future role that Russia will play in the sixth post-Atlantean epoch, a task of which I have so often had to speak, rests firmly upon this unconquerable 'Grail mood' in the Russian people." --Rudolf Steiner (Nov. 3, 1918) Although Eastern Europe has been part of Christian humanity for more than a thousand years, its task and spiritual identity remain a mystery, the answer to which cannot be found unless we look behind outer historical events to the spiritual, meta-historical dimensions of history. This momentous work, breathtaking in its scope and detail, represents just such a penetrating, esoteric study of Eastern Europe in the light of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual research. Prokofieff shows how, from the earliest times, the future "conscience of humanity" flowed from hidden mystery centers in Hibernia to the eastern Slavic peoples. As a result, qualities of "compassion, patience, and willingness for sacrifice" developed in their souls, creating a truly Christian "Grail mood." Despite incalculable suffering--from the persecutions by the Mogul hordes of the thirteenth century to the Bolshevik experiment of the twentieth century--this quality has become an unconquerable force in the depths of their being. In illuminating the maya of outer history, Prokofieff reveals the forces that have been at work to hinder the progress and future intentions of humankind. Those adversarial forces have created a "karma of materialism" that the eastern Slavic peoples have taken upon themselves out of their exalted willingness for sacrifice. Will we be able to use the present opportunity granted by this sacrifice to fulfill the primary purposes of the present cultural epoch? Serious study of this book--intended for students of spiritual science--can lead to a profound awakening to the challenges that face humankind today.

Prokofieff investigates the deepest mysteries of Rudolf Steiner’s life and individuality, from ‘the years of apprenticeship’ and ‘the great Sun period’ to ‘the path of the Teacher of Humanity’ and ‘the birth of the New Mysteries’. He discusses the earthly and supersensible aspects of the first Goetheanum, the implications of the Christmas Conference of 1923-24, and the Foundation Stone meditation that Steiner left as a legacy to members of the Anthroposophical Society. In his very personal Introduction, Prokofieff describes, in moving detail, the events in his life which led to his discovery of anthroposophy whilst living in Communist Russia, and how eventually he came to write this extraordinary study of Rudolf Steiner. The resulting volume – a work of secondary anthroposophical literature unprecedented in its depth and significance – was first published in Germany in 1982, meeting with equal amounts of acclaim, astonishment and controversy. It is published in this paperback edition to mark the 35th anniversary of the original publication.

Book excerpt: ‘To Ita Wegman, the Mysteries were a subject of abiding significance and one which played a major part in the relationship between herself and her teacher, Rudolf Steiner. Not only did he bestow upon her intimate revelations of Mysteries from a distant past but he also answered her request for a renewal of the Mysteries today.’ – from the Foreword ‘What is our anthroposophy other than a Mystery-knowledge bestowed on us anew by our teacher Rudolf Steiner?’– Ita Wegman This unique collection presents Ita Wegman’s principal writings and lectures on the Mysteries – both the Mysteries of the ancient world to which she felt personally connected, and the spiritual science of anthroposophy, which she saw as the contemporary form of Mystery wisdom. The volume begins with Ita Wegman’s firsthand account of Rudolf Steiner’s final days and hours on earth – written immediately after his death in 1925 – followed by several of her powerful letters ‘To All Members’ and their related ‘Leading Thoughts’. Various longer studies are featured, including her lecture ‘A Fragment from the History of the Mysteries’ – delivered at the opening of the second Goetheanum in 1928 – articles on Ephesus and the Colchian Mysteries, and personal impressions of Columba’s Iona, the island of Staffa (with its initiatory Fingal’s Cave), and Palestine, the land where Christ once walked the earth. These writings – several composed specifically for an English readership – bring us closer to the inner being of Ita Wegman, offering insight into her knowledge, vision and understanding of anthroposophy. Her stimulating ideas throw light on the transformation of the ancient Mysteries to anthroposophical knowledge and activity today.

Book excerpt: In this landmark series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner challenges the notion that human consciousness has in essence remained the same throughout history. On the contrary, we can only see the past in its true light when we study the differences in human souls during the various historical eras. Consciousness, he says, evolves constantly and we can only comprehend the present by understanding its origin in the past.Delivered in the evenings during the course of the 'mystery act' of the Christmas Foundation Meeting – when Rudolf Steiner not only re-founded the Anthroposophical Society but for the first time took a formal role within it – these lectures study world history in parallel with the ancient mysteries of initiation, showing how they are intimately linked. Steiner describes consciousness in the ancient East and follows the initiation principle from Babylonia to Greece, up to its influences in present-day spiritual life. He also discusses Gilgamesh and Eabani, the mysteries of Ephesus and Hibernia, and the occult relationship between the destruction by fire of the Temple of Artemis and the burning of the first Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland.Published for the first time with colour plates of Steiner's blackboard drawings, the freshly-revised text is complemented with an introduction, notes and appendices by Professor Frederick Amrine and an index.

Book excerpt: Buried beneath today's Midwestern towns, under several layers of earth and the accumulated debris of two thousand years, are the clues to an ancient mystery. A Native American people, now known as the Hopewell, lived and worked these lands, building earthworks which in some instances dwarf the ruins at Stonehenge. More significantly, these mammoth earthworks were built in different geometric shapes, using a standard unit of measure and aligned to the cycles of the sun and the moon. Using the foundation of existing scholarship, Mysteries of the Hopewell presents new discoveries showing the accomplishments of the Mound Builders in astronomy, geometry, measurement, and counting. William Romain then goes one step further to theorize why generations of people toiled to move millions of tons of earth to form these precise structures, joining the ranks of the Egyptians, Mayans, Greeks, Chinese, and other advanced ancient cultures. William Romain's Mysteries of the Hopewell will appeal to many readers, including anthropologists, mathematicians, and historians, but perhaps especially to readers curious about ancient cultures and seeking explanations for these magnificent earthen structures.

Michael Chabon, author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Moonglow, and The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, is one of the most acclaimed talents in contemporary fiction. The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, published when Chabon was just twenty-five, is the beautifully crafted debut that propelled him into the literary stratosphere. Art Bechstein may be too young to know what he wants to do with his life, but he knows what he doesn’t want: the life of his father, a man who laundered money for the mob. He spends the summer after graduation finding his own way, experimenting with a group of brilliant and seductive new friends: erudite Arthur Lecomte, who opens up new horizons for Art; mercurial Phlox, who confounds him at every turn; and Cleveland, a poetry-reciting biker who pulls him inevitably back into his father’s mobbed-up world. A New York Times bestseller, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh was called “astonishing” by Alice McDermott, and heralded the arrival of one of our era’s great voices. This ebook features a biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been an upsurge of interest in "the Camino," the pilgrim's route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. But where does this fascination in the spiritual exploration of the Middle Ages come from, and what is its significance? Virginia Sease and Manfred Schmidt-Brabant assert that we live in a time of spiritual quest, discovery, and change. Humanity is becoming increasingly sensitive, and primal memories are beginning to emerge in people's consciousness. Within this dynamic context of inner transformation, the Camino's historic importance is being reechoed in human souls. Rudolf Steiner explained that people need to live not only with outer history, but also with the esoteric, hidden narrative behind it--the history of the mysteries. Today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the authors suggest that it is increasingly necessary for us to live consciously with this veiled history of humanity's continual search for communion with the divine world. Based on long research and contemplation, the authors present a survey of extraordinary breadth and depth. Focusing on the spiritual history of humankind, they begin with the cosmic origin of the Grail Mysteries and culminate with the suprasensory Michael cultus and the being of Anthroposophia. Topics also include: the school of Athens; early Christian art and its Gnostic impulses; the Grail initiation in northern Spain; the role of the Cathars and Troubadours in the Manichean spiritual stream; the Camino to Santiago de Compostela and the esoteric aspect of music for the pilgrims; the Music of the Spheres and the Elders of the Apocalypse; the Templars as emissaries of the Holy Grail; the initiations of Christian Rosenkreutz and his relation to anthroposophical art; the early Rosicrucian impulses in America and Europe; and much more.

Book excerpt: In a concise study, Rudolf Steiner presents an inspirational sketch of the evolution of the Mysteries – from ancient Persia through Egypt and Greece, to the Christian era and the present day. He traces the line of initiates from Egyptian divinities Isis and Osiris to Moses, King Arthur’s Round Table and the Holy Grail in the twelfth century. Steiner focuses on the process of initiation as a historical topic: how initiation worked in ancient Egypt and in the late Middle Ages. But his presentation is also inspirational, leading to the question: How can we advance to initiation now? He underscores the potential for achieving enlightenment today without a teacher in the flesh, and explains the four stages of the process towards initiation. He also highlights the need for strenuous efforts to overcome the subtle power of evil – in the form of Lucifer and Ahriman – through selfless work. The four lectures collected here form an important landmark in Rudolf Steiner’s biography: the first being delivered on 3 February 1913 – the very day that the Anthroposophical Society was founded. First published in English under the title The Mysteries of the East and of Christianity and unavailable for many years, this edition has been re-edited by Professor Frederick Amrine and features appendices, an index as well as an introduction by Robert McDermott.
