Book excerpt: The renowned cave diver takes readers on “a thrill ride into unfamiliar worlds”—exploring the hidden depths of our oceans and sunken caves (Publishers Weekly). More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing Mount Everest, and we know more about deep space than we do about the depths of our oceans. In this thrilling firsthand account, Jill Heinerth blends science, adventure, and memoir to bring readers face-to-face with the terror and beauty of earth’s final frontier—and the extremes of human capability. One of the world’s foremost cave divers, Heinerth’s achievements include leading a team that discovered the ancient watery remains of Mayan civilizations and becoming the first person in history to dive deep into an Antarctic iceberg. In Into the Planet, she vividly recounts everything from discovering new species and examining our finite freshwater reserves to the prejudices women face when pursuing careers underwater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 issue showcases North Carolina expatriate writers, ranging from Harriet Jacobs, who moved north to escape enslavement in North Carolina to Glenis Redmond, who developed her poetic voice during her years living here in North Carolina and now travels over 35,000 miles a year bringing poetry to the masses, thus earning the title Road Warrior Poet." Between, find essays on other writers with North Carolina roots: Charles Chesnutt, Tony Earley, Lionel Shriver, and Stephanie Powell Watts. Read retired Emory Professor/Goldsboro native Jim Grimsley's interview with retired LSU Professor/Goldsboro native Moira Crone, featuring her own art. This interview was selected by Elaine Neil Orr to receive the 2020 John Ehle Prize. The issue's cover art is by A.R. Ammons, an Eastern North Carolina poet who spent most of his career teaching at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Also interviewed: Durham native/novelist/California television writer Gwendolyn Parker; poet Allison Adelle Hedge Coke, from her current residence in Hawaii; longtime Texas resident Ben Fountain, talking about growing up in Eastern North Carolina; and Raleigh native Mary Robinette Kowal, recipient of the three biggest speculative fiction awards, the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus, for her novel The Calculating Stars. Bringing up the oft-heard North Carolina remark, "You can't throw a rock in this state without hitting a writer," Editor Margaret Bauer notes, "It turns out that it might be dangerous for North Carolina writers if rocks are thrown anywhere, not just within the state's borders. The Old North State seems a fertile starting point, even if some writers do not remain." Despite these authors branching off to places far from Tar Heel soil, their writing roots are deep in North Carolina, and North Carolina has left its mark. The subject of one essay, Watts, for example, describes her novel as "The Great Gatsby set in rural North Carolina." And Hedge Coke says, "I am never really away from the land and waters there. ... Closing my eyes, [North Carolina] is always present." The Flashbacks section of the issue includes the 2019 James Applewhite Poetry Prize winner, "Meditation in a Glass House" by Wayne Johns; the other finalists selected for honors; and new poetry by the namesake of the award, James Applewhite, and former North Carolina Poet Laureate, Fred Chappell; the 2019 Doris Betts Fiction Prize winning short story "Something Coming" by Katey Schultz; the premiere Paul Green Prize essay by Rachel Warner about renowned author Zora Neale Hurston's brief residence in North Carolina; and an interview with Charlotte writer/musician Jeff Jackson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the people and economy of the United States struggled to recover during the Great Depression, 42 towns in North Carolina would benefit directly from the $83 million the federal government allocated for public art as part of the New Deal. The result was some of the state's most memorable murals, sculptures, reliefs, paintings, oils, and frescoes, most of which were installed in post offices and courthouses. This book is the only record of all of the North Carolina public art works under the program. It provides in-depth accounts of the works themselves and the artists who created them. Photographs of all of the buildings that originally received the art, the works themselves, and almost all of the 41 artists are provided. An appendix describes federal art projects, 1933-1943. There are detailed footnotes, an extensive bibliography, and an index.

Book excerpt: Community-engaged scholarship is an equitable and democratic approach to scholarship that seeks to identify and solve community-based problems. Community-engaged scholars aim to serve the public good by developing and sustaining community-campus partnerships built on trust, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. As universities orient themselves towards serving the public good, they face a number of challenges: faculty and students may not possess the competencies or commitment to build fruitful community partnerships, graduate and undergraduate students may lack the necessary training and mentorship required to develop their identity as community-engaged scholars, and institutional leaders may not know how to motivate faculty and students for this ambitious and challenging endeavor. Unless these challenges are addressed, universities will fail to prepare the next generation of community-engaged scholars. Preparing Students for Community-Engaged Scholarship in Higher Education is an essential research book that explores how faculty and academic leaders can create learning opportunities and intellectual cultures that support the development of community-engaged scholars. Additionally, it will examine how university coursework can help undergraduate and graduate students to develop the knowledge, skills, and commitments necessary for productive and responsible community-engaged scholarship. Featuring a range of topics such as mentorship, higher education, and service learning, this book is ideal for higher education faculty, university leaders, deans, chairs, educators, administrators, policymakers, curriculum designers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the artistic development of renowned potter Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011), this masterful study celebrates and analyzes an artist who held a significant place in the post-World War II craft movement in America. Born in Hawaii of Japanese descent in 1922, Takaezu worked actively in clay, fiber, and bronze for over sixty years. Influenced by midcentury modernism, her work transformed from functional vessels to abstract sculptural forms and installations. Over the years, continued to draw on a combination of Eastern and Western techniques and aesthetics, as well as her love of the natural world. In particular, Takaezu's vertical closed forms became a symbol of her work, created through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques that allowed her to grow her vessels vertically and eased the circular restrictions of the wheel. In addition to her art, Takaezu was renowned for her teaching, including twenty years at Princeton University. This beautifully illustrated book offers the first scholarly analysis of Takaezu's life work and includes essays by Paul Smith, director emeritus of the American Craft Museum, and Janet Koplos, former senior editor of Art in America. Jack Lenor Larsen, a textile designer, author, collector, and advocate of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship, provides a foreword.
