Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earthwork of England: Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, Danish, Norman, and Mediaeval So far as might be he has restricted himself to the discussion of earthworks with which he is personally familiar. This will explain the somewhat limited range of the examples, and how limited is that range no one is more painfully aware than himself; but experience has taught him that there are few more fertile sources of error than a tacit acceptance of the descriptions of others. No matter how excellent and accurate those descriptions may be, to attempt to make use of them at second hand is to do injustice to them and to betray one's own lack of thoroughness. Book excerpt: "Archaic England" by Harold Bayley is an archeology book about the application of the jigsaw system to certain archæological problems of Great Britain, Ireland, and Central Europe. Excerpt: "The fact is now generally accepted as proven by both anthropologists and archæologists, that the most ancient records of the human race exist not in Asia, but in Europe. The oldest documents are not the hieroglyphics of Egypt, but the hunting-scenes scratched on bone and ivory by the European cave-dwelling contemporaries of the mammoth and the woolly rhinoceros. Human implements found on the chalk plateaus of Kent have been assigned to a period prior to the glacial epoch, which is surmised to have endured for 160,000 years, from, roughly speaking, 240,000 to 80,000 years ago. It is now also an axiom that the races of Europe are not colonists from somewhere in Asia, but that, speaking generally, they have inhabited their present districts more or less continuously from the time when they crept back gradually in the wake of the retreating ice."

Download or read book The Prehistoric Settlement of Britain written by Richard Bradley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, first published in 1978, explores the evidence for pre-Roman settlement in Britain. Four aspects of the prehistoric economy are described by the author – colonisation and clearance; arable and pastoral farming; transhumance and nomadism; and hunting, gathering and fishing. These aspects have been brought together to formulate a structure which contains the evidence more naturally than chronological schemes that depend on assumed changes in population or technology. The book draws upon environmental evidence and recent developments in archaeological fieldwork. It also provides an extensive exploration of the published literature on the subject and the scope of the evidence. Originally conceived as an ‘ideas book’ rather than a final synthesis, the author’s intention throughout is to stimulate argument and research, and not to replace one dogma with another.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Britain by : John Hunter
Download or read book The Archaeology of Britain written by John Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of Britain is the only concise and up-to-date introduction to the archaeological record of Britain from the reoccupation of the landmass by Homo sapiens during the later stages of the most recent Ice Age until last century. This fully revised second edition extends its coverage, including greater detail on the first millennium AD beyond the Anglo-Saxon domain, and into recent times to look at the archaeological record produced by Britain’s central role in two World Wars and the Cold War. The chapters are written by experts in their respective fields. Each is geared to provide an authoritative but accessible introduction, supported by numerous illustrations of key sites and finds and a selective reference list to aid study in greater depth. It provides a one-stop textbook for the entire archaeology of Britain and reflects the most recent developments in archaeology both as a field subject and as an academic discipline. No other book provides such comprehensive coverage, with such a wide chronological range, of the archaeology of Britain. This collection is essential reading for undergraduates in archaeology, and all those interested in British archaeology, history and geography.
