Book excerpt: "Earth-Sim starts off awesome and just keeps getting even better..." – Cara Drake A planetary management simulation program... Two students who failed Communications 101... How could it possibly go wrong...? Jem Moran has a reputation to prove and a secret to protect. The prestigious world simulation program seems the answer to both her problems, but only if she can succeed in spite of her slacker of a partner, Kir Davos, and the uncooperative human beings who populate her planet. From the Great Extinction to the Renaissance, from world wars to intergalactic treaties, Jem’s conflict with Kir will shape Earth’s history, and their opposing management styles will either save or doom our planet. Either way, you finally have someone to blame for the shape our world is in. This tongue-in-cheek, award-winning novel blends geography, history, mythology, and popular cultural into a breathtaking panorama of Earth. ONE-CLICK to read Earth-Sim, and you'll never see our planet the same way again...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here Comes Sim!" That sign adorned the front of an old, beat-up pickup truck belonging to Sim Fryson, Sr., a black man born in the Deep South of Reform, Alabama, in 1896. "There Goes Sim!" read the sign on the back of the truck that Sim used to haul manure, dirt, and coal to help support his large family. Sim Fryson Jr., or "Simmy," as his mother called him, was often teased as a child about that battered old truck. But he knew that his father, despite the persecution and prejudice he faced every day, was a man of extreme integrity. Sim Sr. treated everyone with respect and dignity and expected the same in return. That positive influence created in young Sim a burning desire to grow up to be a man his father would be proud of. This book is the story of the younger Sim's life and how he rose from humble beginnings to be a successful college-educated businessman, athlete, musician, family man, and community leader. He was the first black American to own multiple car dealership franchises of Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Nissan and Mazda. As a tribute to his father, "Here Comes Sim" adorned the front of every car he sold. Among many other honors, he has been listed in Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the top 100 Black Businesses in the country. Co-writing with author Susan Phelps Harvey, Sim tells his story with candor. Sometimes funny, sometimes awkward, but always honest and true, Sim "tells it like it is," revealing his teenage escapades, his encounters with famous athletes, and his constant drive to succeed to honor his father's name. As Sim gained success, he realized that he hadn't done it all on his own. God had blessed him. He began to study his Bible as intently and carefully as he had done everything else in his life. Along the way, he developed a new and deeper relationship with God, and discovered Bible truths that challenged him to make profound changes in the way he ran his business. His struggles with his conscience and the miraculous way God blessed his decisions to do the right thing are at the heart of this story. Sim Fryson continues to strive to live his life in a way that honors the memory of his earthly father, and, every day, he gives all the glory and praise to his heavenly Father.

Book excerpt: As the search for Earth-like exoplanets gathers pace, in order to understand them, we need comprehensive theories for how planetary atmospheres form and evolve. Written by two well-known planetary scientists, this text explains the physical and chemical principles of atmospheric evolution and planetary atmospheres, in the context of how atmospheric composition and climate determine a planet's habitability. The authors survey our current understanding of the atmospheric evolution and climate on Earth, on other rocky planets within our Solar System, and on planets far beyond. Incorporating a rigorous mathematical treatment, they cover the concepts and equations governing a range of topics, including atmospheric chemistry, thermodynamics, radiative transfer, and atmospheric dynamics, and provide an integrated view of planetary atmospheres and their evolution. This interdisciplinary text is an invaluable one-stop resource for graduate-level students and researchers working across the fields of atmospheric science, geochemistry, planetary science, astrobiology, and astronomy.

Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6 Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment held in Florence, Italy on March 15-18, 1999. Over the last two decades, passive microwave remote sensing has made considerable progress, and has achieved significant results in the study of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Many years of observations with ground-based and satellite-borne sensors have made an important contribution to improving our knowledge of many geophysical processes of the Earth's environment and of global changes. The evolution in microwave radiometers aboard satellites has increased steadily over recent years. At the same time, many investigations have been carried out both to improve the algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical parameters and to develop new technologies. The book is divided into four main sections: three of these are devoted to the observation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, and the fourth, to future missions and new technologies. The first section deals with the study of sea and land surfaces, and reports recent advances in remote sensing of ocean wind, sea ice, soil moisture and vegetation biomass, including electromagnetic modelling and the assimilation of radiometric data in models of land surface processes. The following two sections are devoted to the measurement of atmospheric quantities which are of fundamental importance in climatology and meteorology, and, since they influence radio-wave propagation, they also impact on several other fields, including geodesy, navigational satellite and radioastronomy. The last section presents an overview of new technologies and plans for future missions.
