Book Synopsis The NE Atlantic Region by : G. Péron-Pinvidic
Download or read book The NE Atlantic Region written by G. Péron-Pinvidic and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NAG-TEC project was a collaborative effort by the British Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, the Geological Survey of Ireland, the Geological Survey of the Netherlands, the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, the Geological Survey of Norway, Iceland GeoSurvey and the Faroese Geological Survey (Jarðfeingi), along with a number of academic partners and significant support from industry. The main focus was to investigate the tectonic evolution of the region with a particular emphasis on basin evolution along conjugate margins. A key outcome was the development of a new tectonostratigraphic atlas and database that includes comprehensive geological and geophysical information relevant for understanding the Devonian to present evolution of the NE Atlantic margins. These provide the foundation upon which ongoing research and exploration of the area can build. This Special Publication provides some of the first scientific results and analysis based on the project, including regional stratigraphic analysis and correlations, crustal structure and interpretation of geophysical data sets, plate kinematics and the evolution of igneous provinces.

Book Synopsis Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin by : Geological Society of London
Download or read book Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers and research results presented here have been prepared as part of the Integrated Basin Studies project. This project had the objective of studying the lithospheric and upper crustal processes governing the formation and evolution of extensional and foreland basins and to decipher the role of tectonics, sea level and sedimentary processes in the filling of such basins. The Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin module focused on the rifted sedimentary basins of the northern North Sea and off Mid-Norway. This prolific hydrocarbon province has an extensive industry and scientific database and offers a unique opportunity to study fundamental earth processes, from failed rifting to crustal breakup and accretion of oceanic crust. A set of new models for basin formation and filling has been derived, including linking of sedimentary basin faulting to lower crustal deformation, signature and variability of syn-rift infill, correlation of mineralogy to seismic signature, nature and characteristics of volcanic margin formation and distribution of present-day stress field.

Download or read book STRATI 2013 written by Rogério Rocha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 1222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1st International Congress on Stratigraphy (STRATI 2013), hold in Lisbon, 1–7 July 2013, follows the decision to internationalize the conferences previously organized by the French Committee of Stratigraphy (STRATI), the last one of which was held in Paris in 2010. Thus, the congress possesses both the momentum gained from an established conference event and the excitement of being the first International Congress on Stratigraphy. It is held under the auspices of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (IUGS) and it is envisaged that this first congress will lead to others being held in the future. This book includes all papers accepted for oral or poster presentation at the 1st International Congress on Stratigraphy. Papers include a short abstract, main text, figures, tables and references. Each paper has been reviewed by two internationally renowned scientists.

Book excerpt: Written by leading experts in the field, this work summarises the important aspects relating to layered intrusions, with almost universal coverage of the subject. Each chapter is a complete review of a theme or specific geological intrusion. The first part of the book covers the general principles and processes which apply to all intrusions. Those chapters on individual intrusions concentrate on factual information. A detailed full colour geological map of the Skaergaard intrusion is also included. This book will appeal to a wide audience - university libraries, research students in igneous petrology, state organisations such as exploration companies - as well as being an ideal textbook for university courses on igneous petrology, and geochemistry and petrography.

Book Synopsis Hydrocarbon Exploration to Exploitation West of Shetlands by : S.J.C. Cannon
Download or read book Hydrocarbon Exploration to Exploitation West of Shetlands written by S.J.C. Cannon and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the challenges facing explorers and developers alike in a region that is becoming a major focus of the petroleum industry in the United Kingdom, Faroes and North Norway. Several West of Shetland fields are still in the appraisal phase almost a decade after discovery. Sub-volcanic exploration risks remain high: sub-volcanic structural traps are imaged poorly, and so the geophysical community is responding with the application of latest technology. The more simple reservoirs might not be large enough to prompt informed and speedy development decisions; larger fields might have a combination of complexities, requiring a phased approach to the development. Infrastructure has been slow to arrive and planned developments have been subject to dramatic swings in fiscal regime ranging from special allowances to unexpected tax increases. Environmental challenges are significant when moving into more remote, deeper water. The perception of these challenges by the third parties has become much more acute. To sustain its right to operate, the industry has to demonstrate safe drilling operations and appropriate response capability with government agencies.
Book Synopsis Studies in Volcanology by : Thor Thordarson
Download or read book Studies in Volcanology written by Thor Thordarson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2009 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor George Patrick Leonard Walker was one of the fathers of modern quantitative volcanology and arguably the foremost volcanologist of the twentieth century. In his long career, George studied a wide spectrum of volcanological problems and in doing so influenced almost every branch of the field. This volume, which honours his memory and his contributions to the field of volcanology, contains a collection of papers inspired by, and building upon, many of the ideas previously developed by George. Many of the contributors either directly studied under and worked with George, or were profoundly influenced by his ideas. The topics broadly fall under the three themes of lava flows and effusion, explosive volcanism, and volcanoes and their infrastructure.

Book Synopsis Petroleum Geology of NW Europe by : B. Levell
Download or read book Petroleum Geology of NW Europe written by B. Levell and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the Geological Society on behalf of PGC Ltd. (1 hardback volume in slipcase). The 8th Conference on the Petroleum Geology of NW Europe was held in September 2015 and marked the 50th anniversary of the first commercial discovery offshore in the North Sea (West Sole, in September 1965). Its focus was ‘50 Years of Learning – a Platform for Present Value and Future Success’ and its objective was to provide an update on discoveries, developments, technologies and geological concepts from the region. The 39 extensively illustrated technical papers cover the full width of recent activity and are divided into the following sections: Plays and fairways; Play assessment; Recent successes and learnings from failures; Infrastructure-led exploration and development; Late-life fields, re-development and the ‘next life’; Onshore exploration and development. The proceedings volume follows the format of many of the previous conferences since the first in 1974. Collectively these provide a unique documentation of the discovery and development of several NW European hydrocarbon provinces. The volume will be of interest to all geoscientists involved in exploration and development in NW Europe. It provides a fascinating overview of how creativity can continue to reveal hidden resources in an area that has been called ‘mature’ for at least the last 20 of its 50-year history.
