Y Nearly twenty years ago the writer had the pleasure of meet ing the Rev. Theodore A. Leggett and saw for the first time a pedigree chart of the Leggett family. As was quite naturally the case it followed to a large extent the direct lines of Mr. Leggett, but considerable work had been done on other lines as well. When the writer decided to publish such parts of the Leggett family history as could be obtained, it was the obvious thing to use if possible the work of the Rev. Mr. Leggett, and through the kindness of his son, Mr. J. Dwight Leggett, the Rev. Theodore A. Leggett having died on Nov. 25, 1906, aged 61 years, the material that Mr. Leggett had collected was made the basis of this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward Jessup of West Farms, Westchester Co;, New York, and His Descendants: With an Introduction and an Appendix, the Latter Containing Records of Other American Families of the Name With Some Additional Memoranda Of necessity much has been done by correspondence. To his large number of correspondents, more than six hundred at least, between whom and the writer several thousand letters have already passed, - both public offi cials and civilians, on both sides Of the Atlantic, and in distant lands, he would here make his sincere acknowl edgements for the aid they have rendered. A few, to whom he is under special Obligations, are referred to in connection with the work done by them individually. With the exception Of some names belonging to the later generations, the record is as complete as circumstances would permit. In most cases where the record is defeo tive or doubts remain unsolved, it is because either no record was found or those who knew the facts failed to communicate them. That there are errors is very prob able. When three or four variations of a given date are reported, it is a matter Of judgment which shall be chosen. In such cases the Oldest private family record is followed. It is earnestly requested that all well-accredited corrections be furnished the writer, both for future use and in the interest Of historical verity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Eleanor Phillips Brackbill bought her suburban Westchester house in 2000, three mysteries came with it. First, from the former owner, came the information that the 1930s house was "a Sears house or something like that." Thrilled to think it might be a Sears, Roebuck & Co. mail-order house, Brackbill was determined to find evidence to prove it. She found instead a house pedigree of a different sort. Second, and even more provocative, was the discovery of several iron stakes protruding from the property's enormous granite outcropping, bigger in square footage than the house itself. When queried about them, the former owner told her, "Someone a long time ago kept monkeys there, chained to the stakes." Monkeys? Was this some kind of suburban legend? A third mystery came to light at closing, when a building inspector's letter contained a reference to the house having had, at one time, a different address. Why would the house have had another address? Her curiosity aroused, and intent upon finding the facts, Brackbill gradually peeled back layers of history, allowing the house and the land to tell their stories, and uncovering a past inextricably woven into four centuries of American history. At the same time, she found thirty-two owners, across 350 years, who had just one thing in common: ownership of a particular parcel of land. An Uncommon Cape not only tells the story of an eight-year odyssey of fact-finding and speculation but also answers the broader question: "What came before?" and, through material presented in twenty-two sidebars, offers readers insights and guidelines on how to find the stories behind their own homes.

Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.

Book excerpt: The history of scenic Pleasantville is a rich patriotic fabric woven with the arrival of the first tenant farmers and laborers during Dutch Manor rule. During the Revolutionary War, local militias were critical in the capture of British spy Maj. John Andre. The construction of the railroad in 1846 opened new markets for farmers and attracted many New York City professionals wanting an idyllic countryside family setting. It also initiated the tradition of the daily commuter. In 1908, the wealthy Manville family moved to the village, and the 1928 wedding of their daughter to the Count Folke Bernadotte of Sweden was a major international social event. That same year, Dewitt Wallace and his wife, Lila, moved to Pleasantville to launch Reader's Digest. Within 20 years, the Little Magazine would grow to 30 editions in 14 languages with a global circulation of 28 million every month. Throughout the years, the one thread that appears in this remarkable village from start to finish is a kind tradition of charity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the urbanized area that spreads across northern New Jersey and around New York City as a case study, this book presents a convincing explanation of metropolitan fragmentation—the process by which suburban communities remain as is or break off and form separate political entities. The process has important and deleterious consequences for a range of urban issues, including the weakening of public finance and school integration. The explanation centers on the independent effect of urban infrastructure, specifically sewers, roads, waterworks, gas, and electricity networks. The book argues that the development of such infrastructure in the late nineteenth century not only permitted cities to expand by annexing adjacent municipalities, but also further enhanced the ability of these suburban entities to remain or break away and form independent municipalities. The process was crucial in creating a proliferation of municipalities within metropolitan regions. The book thus shows that the roots of the urban crisis can be found in the interplay between technology, politics, and public works in the American city.
