Book excerpt: "When Washington State's Okanogan County was first opened to home- steading, and mines, ranches, farms, and small communities were developed, schools were an important part of this growth. The homesteaders and pioneers who came to the Okanogan country were from many areas of the United States and the world. These people were mostly rural in background, and they came with rural values and a rural outlook on education. As the county developed economically and socially, pioneer schools also changed. The one-room log school, long a symbol of pioneer education, gave way to graded schools replete with such things as libraries and professionally-trained teachers. The new schools were a part of the natural growth of the county, and new school buildings were usually of frame or brick construction. A first high school class was graduated in 1912, and it symbolized not only maturation of the county, but also the drive and spirit of the pioneers whose sacrifices led to the development of public education in Okanogan County. Concurrent to a rapidly developing pioneer school system were efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Catholic Church to provide education for residents of the Colville Indian Reservation. The government's efforts were either in obligation of agreements, or were simply overt attempts at assimilation. The Church's mission, though, was substantially different. St. Mary's Mission provided a quality education that not only helped individual Indians become Catholic, it also eased their transition into the twentieth century and a White dominated America. Jean Paul Sartre has said that "it is the future which decides whether the past is living or dead." The past that was early education in the Okanogan is today reflected in the local schools. These are growing, developing, and maturing systems that are, indeed, alive. It is a pioneer spirit of education that lives in the legacy of Okanogan County Schools"--Document.
