Book excerpt: The Radarsat Antarctic Mapping Project is a collaboration between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency to map Antarctica using synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The first Antarctic Mapping Mission (AMM-1) was successfully completed in October 1997. Data from the acquisition phase of the 1997 campaign have been used to achieve the primary goal of producing the first, high-resolution SAR image map of Antarctica. The limited amount of data suitable for interferometric analysis have also been used to produce remarkably detailed maps of surface velocity for a few selected regions. Most importantly, the results from AMM-1 are now available to the general science community in the form of various resolution, radiometrically calibrated and geometrically accurate image mosaics. The second Antarctic imaging campaign occurred during the fall of 2000. Modified from AMM-1, the satellite remained in north looking mode during AMM-2 restricting coverage to regions north of about -80 degrees latitude. But AMM-2 utilized for the first time RADARSAT-1 fine beams providing an unprecedented opportunity to image many of Antarctica's fast glaciers whose extent was revealed through AMM-1 data. AMM-2 also captured extensive data suitable for interferometric analysis of the surface velocity field. This report summarizes the science goals, mission objectives, and project status through the acquisition phase and the start of the processing phase. The reports describes the efforts of team members including Alaska SAR Facility, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Vexcel Corporation, Goddard Space Flight Center, Wallops Flight Facility, Ohio State University, Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, White Sands Facility, Canadian Space Agency Mission Planning and Operations Groups, and the Antarctic Mapping Planning Group. Book Synopsis Polar Remote Sensing by : Robert Massom
Download or read book Polar Remote Sensing written by Robert Massom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar Remote Sensing is a two-volume work providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary discussion of the applications of satellite sensing. Volume 2 focuses on the ice sheets, icebergs, and interactions between ice sheets and the atmosphere and ocean. It contains information about the applications of satellite remote sensing in all relevant polar related disciplines, including glaciology, meteorology, climate and radiation balance and oceanogaraphy. It also provides a brief review of the state-of-the-art of each discipline, including current issues and questions. Various passive and active remote sensor types are discussed, and the book then concentrates on specific geophysical applications. Its interdisciplinary approach means that major advances and publications are highlighted. Polar Remote Sensing: Ice Sheets summarizes fundamental principles of detectors, imaging and geophysical product retrieval includes a chapter on the important new field of satellite synthetic-aperture radar interferometry is a "one stop shop" for polar remote sensing information contains significant new information on the Earth's polar regions describes sophisticated groundbased remote sensing applications with specific reference to their use in polar regions.

Book Synopsis Space-Earth Matters by : Dr. Surendra Parashar
Download or read book Space-Earth Matters written by Dr. Surendra Parashar and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human perception of Earth in space is ever changing. Once upon a time there was this belief that our Earth is flat... But scientifically, what is currently known of Earth in space and life on Earth? In Space-Earth Matters, Dr. Parashar outlines the scientific history of space from the Big Bang and the genesis of stars and planets billions of years ago to the recent human enterprise of placing thousands of satellites in orbit around our Earth. Dr. Parashar will spacewalk you through the characteristics of orbital mechanics and the basics to understanding the motion of planets and satellites in space and answer such questions as: • How are space science and technology through satellites, sensors, and ground systems being employed for the observation of Earth and exploration of our solar system? • Are such activities in space regulated and managed—and by whom? • Who is responsible for the global governance of space including space debris? • Are there any socio-economic returns of space investments and who has the capability to deploy space missions in order to derive these benefits? Dr. Parashar explains why space-based applications like weather and environmental monitoring, resource mapping, disaster management support, communications, and navigation are of utmost value to all of us on Earth. Space-Earth Matters is a diverse and yet thoroughly approachable exploration of all matters Space and Earth for you, your colleagues, friends, and family.
