Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepped care provides the least intrusive intervention to individuals seeking treatment by providing a range of treatment intensities. In the past two decades, computers and the internet have provided a new and efficient medium that lends well to adding steps in a stepped-care model. While there is ample evidence to support the positive effects of bibliotherapy or self-help books, computer-aided therapy (also known as e-health) has the potential to take these effects even further. This volume will be of interest to practitioners and organizations attempting to serve rural and underserved communities. The book focuses on evidence-based treatment, making it consistent with quality improvement initiatives.

Book excerpt: First published in 2001. This is Volume 2 in a series on the science of mental health and focuses on Autism. It begins with an overview presentation of a case and a recent consensus description of diagnostic instruments for autistic-spectrum disorders. This is followed by recent epidemiologic data. Epidemiology has an enhanced prominence in studies of autism because there is an unresolved controversy about the incidence of new cases of autism. In some surveys the incidence of autism appears to be increasing, and the controversy is over whether this is a true observation or whether greater diagnostic awareness is leading to the apparent increase. This volume attempt to resolve the conflicting data as if autism is indeed on the rise, there must be a new, significant environmental risk factor, which has to be identified with a view to prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a complex multifaceted disorder affecting neurodevelopment during the early years of life and, for many, throughout the life span. Inherent features include difficulties or deficits in communication, social interaction, cognition, and interpersonal behavioral coordination, to name just a few. Autism profoundly impacts the affected individual, the family, and, in many cases, the localized communities. The increased prevalence of childhood autism has resulted in rapid developments in a wide range of disciplines in recent years. Nevertheless, despite intensive research, the cause(s) remain unresolved and no single treatment strategy is employed. To address these issues, Comprehensive Guide to Autism is an all-embracing reference that offers analyses and discussions of contemporary issues in the field of autism. The work brings together scientific material from leading experts in the field relating to a wide range of important current topics, such as the early identification and treatment of children with autism, pertinent social and behavioral studies, recent developments in genetics and immunology, the influence of diet, models of autism, and future treatment prospects. Comprehensive Guide to Autism contains essential readings for behavioral science researchers, psychologists, physicians, social workers, parents, and caregivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an international research-based framework that has empowered parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to become critical decision makers to actively guide their child’s learning and self-advocacy. Parents can use this framework to identify their child’s vision and dreams, and to work with educators and service providers to establish specific learning goals and to implement effective interventions and programs that enable their child to achieve those goals and realise their vision for the future. The book begins by reviewing available research on evidence-based practice for children with ASD and outlining the Cycle of Learning decision-making framework for parents and professionals. Throughout the remainder of the book, case studies are presented to illustrate the ways in which different parents have successfully utilised this framework to develop effective plans for their child and to advocate for learning and education programs for both their child and other children with ASD in school and community settings. In addition, it highlights concrete examples of how parents have used the framework to empower their children with ASD to develop their self-awareness and self-determination, and to be able to self-advocate as they move through adolescence and into adult life.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that early intervention can greatly improve the development of a child with autism. Children with disabilities-including children with autism-can receive intervention services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Low income children may also receive intervention services through Medicaid or CHIP, health care programs overseen at the federal level by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and administered by the states. Children of servicemembers may receive services through TRICARE, DOD's health care program. GAO was asked to review federal autism efforts. This report describes (1) how federal agencies encourage early autism identification and interventions, and (2) the intervention services provided by federal education and health care programs. It also (3) examines steps taken by HHS and federal agencies to improve research coordination. GAO collected information on education programs in five states that were selected for size, activities, and variation in geographic location. GAO analyzed health care program data: fiscal year 2014 TRICARE data and fiscal year 2013 Medicaid and CHIP data-the most recent data available at the time of the review-from another five states selected based on the availability of reliable data. GAO also monitored the implementation of its 2013 recommendations to improve autism

Book excerpt: Participants were 23 caregivers of children between the ages of four to twenty-two years old who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and attend the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) Social Recreation program in Winterville, Wilmington, and Newport. The present study evaluated the quality of life in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, as well as the utilization and availability of resources for their child and the family. Data was collected using an online Qualtrics survey sent out to families by email. The survey consisted of questions regarding demographics, questions from the Questionnaire for Each Treatment regarding the treatments their child with autism receives, and questions from the Family Quality of Life Scale by the Beach Center on Disability. Overall results revealed that parenting is the most satisfying domain of quality of life, and disability related support was the least satisfactory for the parents. Results suggest that families with disability need to identify and enroll their children in early intervention programs and recreation program that help with children's development. The government and school programs should also strive to offer educative sessions for parents and families with children with autism to enhance their contribution outside of school hours.
