Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of North Dakota: Essential Outlines of American History "I hear the tread of pioneers, Of nations yet to be, The first low wash of waves where soon Shall roll a human sea." - John G. Wittier. More intensely interesting than a fairy tale is the story of the development of the great Northwest. It is a story of adventure and of daring in the lives of individuals not unmixed with romance, for there were brave, loving hearts, and gentle clinging spirits among those hardy pioneers, and many incidents and choice bits of legend have been handed down, which I hope may serve to make these pages interesting. It is a story with traces of blood and tears, illustrating "man's inhumanity to man," for there were some among the early traders who had little regard for the expenditure of these precious treasures, in their pursuit of "Gold! gold! gold! gold!" that is "heavy to get and light to hold, as suggested by Hood - the "Price of many a crime untold How widely its agencies vary, To save, to ruin, to curse, to bless, As even its minted coins express, Now stamp'd with the image of good Queen Bess, And now of a Bloody Mary." It is a story of mans love for man. in the work of the early missionaries, who, in obedience to the command of the Master, went forth into the wilderness to lift up and benefit the "untutored" savage, who only "sees God in clouds, or hears Him in the wind," and to bring refuge to his white children, who had blazed the way, and who were languishing in despair. It is a story of heroic deeds, of patriotic devotion to duty, of suffering and bloodshed and of development. Whether I am the one to write the story, let others judge. "Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us; Let us journey to a lonely land I know. There's a whisper on the night wind, there's a star agleam to guide us, And the Wild is calling, calling - let us go." - Robert W. Service, "The Call of the Wild." My family in all of its branches were among the early settlers of New York and New England, frontiersmen and participants in all of the early Indian wars. My mother's people suffered in the Wyoming massacre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out Where the West Begins: Being the Early and Romantic History of North Dakota At the time of the capture of Chief Gall, Barry was located at Bismarck, and started for Fort Buford to secure photographs of this famous warrior. Upon his arrival he reported to Major Brotherton, and having asked and received permission to take photographs of the Indians, he set up a portable gallery, went to the hostile camp and through the interpreter made arrangements to take photos of the Chiefs at their price of $6 per sitting. But before the sittings took place, the interpreter failing to get any thing for himself, maliciously informed the Indians that the paleface would make lots of money by selling their photographs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Vol. 1 It is with pleasure that the secretary of the State Historical Society reports the progress that has been made during the past year. Since the annual state appropriation of became available, July 1, 1905, the general outline of work has been ar ranged and some small part of the task has been accomplished. When the Society was reorganized in 1908, very little was at tempted during the next two years except some archaeological work in the Missouri valley, an exhibit at the St. Louis world's fair and the beginning of a collection of the newspapers of the state. The proposed reconstruction of the capitol building has delayed our occupation of the rooms set apart for us, but in June we were notified that we could take possession of the museum room, office and vault in the basement of the new wing at the capitol. This was Welcome news to all friends of the Society. During the inter'regnum the collection of newspapers, books, Indian relics and other miscellaneous material was stored in various places, in danger of loss by fire and subject to all the wear and tear incident to such storage; The furnishing of the museum room with suitable display cases, and the vault with file cases for papers and documents, has yet to be done, no funds are available just now for any of these purposes. In spite of this, however, the Society has taken possession of the rooms and is having temporary cases made till permanent furniture can be supplied, so that the public may see what we have done to justify state aid in the past and why we ask for a larger appro priation for the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dakota Territory, Vol. 1: South Dakota, Its History and Its People Regarding the early inhabitants of this country, trustworthy history goes no farther into the past than to the discovery and settlement of the Atlantic region by the Europeans. Conjectures have been formed from the traditions of the Indians, and from relics discovered in ancient mounds and earthworks taken in connection with the course of events narrated in sacred and profane history, that lead to the belief that this country was peopled at a very early period by colonies from Eastern Asia.
