Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Middle Tennessee The history of Tennessee, and especially that of our own section of the State, was long sadly neglected, and it is now with the greatest difficulty that many of the isolated facts of tradition may be woven into a continuous thread of history. The failure of preceding generations to gather and record, first-handed, many of the stirring events of early times in the Cumberland Valley from those who participated in them, has increased the task of the historical writer of to-day. Only one other attempt has been made to write a history of Middle Tennessee and that was by Col. A. W. Putnam, of Nashville, in 1859. From this work I have gathered much valuable information as well as from Carr's Early Times, the histories of the State written by Judge Haywood, Dr. Ramsey, Mr. Phelan, Prof. McGee, Garrett and Goodpasture, and others. I am also indebted to Imlay's Historical Works, Roosevelt's Winning of the West, and Washington Irving's account of Spanish travels. Much of the latter-day traditions extant in both Sumner and Davidson Counties has been collected and harmonized and to the many sources from which this has been gathered I acknowledge myself indebted. Especially do I desire to express thanks to Dr. J. H. McNeilly, of Nashville, Dr. R. V. Foster, of Lebanon, and Col. Ruben T. Durrett, of Louisville, for the courtesies and help extended and many favors shown. Without the aid of these and of others who might be mentioned I should have fallen far short of the historical accuracy which I believe to be a characteristic of the forthcoming work: For my own gratification as well as for that of coming generations, I have gathered the facts presented from every available source, and now give them to the public, trusting that they may both instruct and entertain. James Robertson Uncertain of our footing, we pause: discerning not all our surroundings, doubtful whither a step will lead, we ask, Shall we go forward? In the palpable obscure we stand: no pathway is discernible; no human, guiding voice is heard; no helping hand is felt. Our first step is into the wilderness and gloom. N o pillar of fire opens and defends the way: silence reigns. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of Tennessee This book is written from the modern point of view with reference to the proper interpretation of history. Much of our history is almost exclusively political history. It is little more than an account of public officials and a description of battles. History, as properly construed, is an interpretation of the whole life of a people. It is as much the duty of a historian to interpret the industrial life, the educational life, the social life, and the religions life of a people, as it is to interpret their political life. Certainly children should not get the idea that wars and politics constitute the whole of history. Much of the material herein used is original. It has been obtained through original investigation and research, and has never before been published. Many facts used were gotten from histories of Tennessee by Ramsay, Haywood, and Garrett and Goodpasture. These splendid books contain a veritable storehouse of valuable historical material and will hold an important place in the history of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Tennessee: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time The want here indicated is now about being sup plied; and, as the task of doing so is no light or superficial one, the publishers have given into the hands of the two gentlemen whose names appear in the title-page, the work of preparing a series of cabi net histories, embracing a volume for each state in the Union. Of their ability to perform this well, we need not speak. They are no strangers in the literary world. What they undertake the public may rest assured will be performed thoroughly; and that no sectarian, sectional, or party feelings will bias their judgment, or lead them to violate the integrity of history. The importance of a series of state histories like those now commenced, can scarcely be estimated. Being condensed as carefully as accuracy and interest of narrative will permit, the size and price of the volumes will bring them within the reach of every family in the country, thus making them home-read ing books for old and young. Each individual will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Nashville Geography and history cannot be entirely separated. As this dependence one upon the other is evident, is it not best to begin them together? Will not this early connection of the two make the study clearer to the child in after years? And, as all teachers know, when introducing any subject, we begin with an object or a thought which is familiar to the children; so it follows that the geography and history of the land over which the little child walks every day, of the hills, valleys and streams which he sees from his own window, is the proper introduction to the geography and history of the world. Another and more important thought presents itself. The true patriot must first be true to his own home. So by fostering, in the right way, a love for home, we are strengthening a broad patriotism. The children of the British Isles have for hundreds of years learned first at their mother's knee of heroic deeds done at their own doors. After that they have learned their country's history. This has given them a respect for their own people and a belief in themselves which has helped to make their nation a world force. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Tennessee: The Making of a State Although the annals of Tennessee are not filled with accounts of the revolutions which have changed the complexion of the world, yet her history, in addition to the interest which it possesses for her children as giving an account of the achievements of their ancestors, has one claim upon the attention of the thoughtful student of history which is peculiarly her own. In it can be studied, as under a glass and in an hour, the process of development which in other States is either imperfectly displayed or is spread over a long stretch of time, the periods of which are indistinctly understood, or marred by extraneous and disturbing causes. In the Thirteen Colonies the chief causes of disturbances were the cupidity of colonial proprietors and the despotism of rulers. In the younger States, excepting Kentucky, and perhaps Vermont, the line of advancement began at or after a point where the full development of American principles had been attained. In Tennessee we have within the limits of a century a picture of national life as complete as that of England through its two thousand years, or that of Rome from the kings to the emperors.
