Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Sketch of the African Mission of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U. S. A Surely there can be no duty more imperatively binding upon Christians than that of striving to give to all the nations who sit in darkness the marvellous light of the Gospel. That the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States in her corporate capacity has faithfully endeavored to obey this parting behest of the Master, admits of no question; that her efforts may have been productive of less tangible results, in some instances, than were hoped and prayed for, in no wise detracts from the sincerity and devotion of those who have gone forth thoroughly imbued with the missionary spirit, and have done all in their power to disseminate the teach ings of Him whose all-embracing love compassed the entire world. In no direction, perhaps, has greater effort been made by this Church with less apparent success than in the attempt to illuminate with the light of Christianity the gloomy recesses of the Dark Con tinent. The history of African Missions is one that, while it may sadden the hearts of believers and induce a temporary feeling of discouragement, should also serve as an incentive to renewed effort and an increased faith in the final triumph of those teachings upon which the salvation of the human race depends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Formation and Growth of the Reformed Episcopal Church, 1873-1902 This book is called forth by a strongly-felt need for some gathering together of the various threads of the history of the Reformed Episcopal Church during its twenty-five years and more of existence. Many and able have been the pamphlets and articles written, but no connected account has been recorded. The years are passing, and already some of those who bravely, for con science' sake, faced hardness as soldiers of Jesus Christ, yielded up position, friends, wealth, not counting even their lives dear unto themselves, have joined the Church Triumphant. For this reason, the call came, while many of those earnest laborers were yet with us, for some one to weave into one golden thread, their recollections of our early days, that there might be left in the hands of the workers in years to come a clear and accurate history of the reasons for the founding of our Church, and its for mation and history during its first quarter of a century. Such a book is of necessity largely a compilation, a transcript of the thoughts of others. And many thanks are due to those whose kind assistance and encouragement has made such a work possible. Among them also were some of those valued friends who are to-day rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of George David Cummins, D. D: First Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church Early Days and College Life. "We know him now, all narrow jealousies Are silent; and we see him as he moved: How modest, kindly, all-accomplished, wise, With what sublime repression of himself! Wearing the white flower of a blameless life Before a thousand peering littlenesses." George David Cummins was born near the town of Smyrna, Del., December nth, 1822. His fathers family came to this country from Scotland, and settled at Oxford, near Easton, Md., on the Chesapeake Bay. It was at that time a shipping port of importance. From Oxford several members of the family removed to Delaware and Pennsylvania. Two of the uncles of the subject of this memoir settled in Philadelphia, and became prominent shipping and commission merchants. The father of Bishop Cummins, Mr. George Cummins, purchased land in Delaware, and there he lived all his life. He occupied prominent positions in the State, and was a member of the Legislature for many years. Early in life he married the daughter of Governor Collins.
